Help! I recently bought a B&W Circular Polarizing Filter and everytime I take it off the camera there is a coating of very fine black dust that needs to be removed. I am not getting this on any of my UV filters and the dust is appearing no matter where I am taking pictures. Any thoughts on what could be causing this? Very frustrating problem with what should be a high quality product ... Thanks for any help you can give me ...

Pictures?... if its on the outside it maybe from your enviorment or perhaps lint from your bag... a Rocket blower can easily remove thsi

Never heard of such a thing; that's just... Weird.

I have the same problem with a 77mm clear B+W filter that I purchased new last month. The black powder coating is coming off, and leaves black residue on my lens cloth and in the filter package. It may leave the powder elsewhere. Has anyone else had this issue? The filter frame coating appears uneven as a result of the black powder coming off.

Where did you get the filters from ? please don't say Maxsaver.

Never heard of this happening to B+W filters.

Given they are so expensive I would return them for a replacement.

I've had the exact same problem with you. Mine was on a 67mm XS-Pro UV filter though.

What I did was, contact the seller I bought it from and he offered me a full refund, claiming manufacturing defect.

is it paint or anodizing coming off of the filter threads? i'm also curious as to where you guys purchased them.

It could be some excess anodizing loosening off the threads as the polarizer rotates. If it stops, I wouldn't worry about it. If it persists, return it. I'm sure that it won't fall apart like some Hoyas. :D

I've got more black anodized Heliopans and B+Ws than I can count - I've never experienced the black dust... But it does make sense that it might be residuals from the filter threads. I'd give them a good wipe-down as well as the lens threads and see if it returns... It shouldn't.

Nope, got mine from a local seller where I live.

Here are some pics of the "defective" XS-Pro.

At least I got my refund promptly from the seller. Got the Hoya HD after that :D

^ That looks like a bum coating. Good call on the return.

Yup, defective indeed. Was pretty horrified when I first held the filter in my hands. Black powder got all over my fingers.

I bought it from a local online retailer here in Malaysia.

Sorry, didn't know you wanted the specific seller. It's neither. Bought it from a dealer in a local photography forum, Photomalaysia.com under the nickname BHP. Hope that helps. ;)
