Is this shot lost due to the position of the car?
I like the light and the clarity, but should it be in the bin?

Im trying to remember. Given it was shot on my 1D, i would suspect that it was with the 70-200L IS f2.8 but it could have well been with the 24-70. Im pretty sure though it is the 70-200.

I'm no expert, not even close. But if you cropped a bit off the top I think that shout would be worth hanging.

I went from the 30D to a 1D MKIIn (new from Canon UK stock) and the difference is immense. In fact the drawback I now have is I hate using my second body (a 20D) as its sooooooo slow by comparison. However the UI on the 20D and the 30D is much better. Takes two hands to use the functions on a 1D as opposed to 1 thumb on a 20,30,40 or a 1D MKIII. Oh and no USB 2.0 only 1.1 and Firewire, but being a mac user FW is fine and faster than USB 2.0

I can't do it from work, I'll have a go when I get home, but I would crop out the blue and some of the grand stand, perhaps just above the car aerial.

Ahhh sorry, I would have left the space in front of the car and changed the aspect ratio with the crop.
I don't know if it's 'right' or not, but sometime I find by changing the aspect ratio from standard I can make my shots better by removing distractions, (like the blue at the top of your photo).
I'm interested to hear what others think of this...

I always crop in print ratios such as that one, 4x6.

IMHO I prefer my shots to have more space infront of the car / bike than behind as I personally feel this give a better indication of where the car is heading. A too tighter crop prevents this and makes the image less interesting (but that is just my opinion).
Like you I always used to crop images based on standard aspect ratio's (6x4, 7x5 etc.), but I have got out of this habit as I don't generally print many of my shots. Having said that a printed and trimmed photo cropped to a non-standard aspect ratio can be more interesting.
The shot most certainly isn't one for the bin - it's sharp and well exposed. I would personally go for a more horizontal biased crop (say 8x5 or something like that) to accentuate the direction in which the car is moving, and remove some of the background from the top of the photo (i.e. the blue section). You could also remove a small amount of the track ahead of the car, but I wouldn't remove too much of it (see attached example).
To be honest though, it is really down to your own personal taste, and what your client wants if you're selling your work. If you have another photo very similar with a composition you're more happy with then it might be one for the bin
