I posted this in the Travel section but people seem reluctant to comment over there so I've posted here.

Martin,
The shot is so typical of that area - it could also have been taken in or around Tunisia as I seem to remember walking is similar narrrow streets.

Its very stark and very blue but I think I like it, - I find the litter and the items in the bottom right corner distracting possibly if you cropped them out, which in turn would bring the boy closer to the front of the image this might help eye make contact with the subject straight away.

David

This is a FANTASTIC SHOT!

I really like it a lot. It captures the charm and "old world" quality of the area. I especially like the inclusion of the runnin child. That takes it from a charming shot to someones home. People live here, not just take photos of it. Great capture.

Now, on to the critique: There are a couple of distractors in the lower right of the frame. Crop or Clone. Also, the white balance is just a bit too cyan. I know that the buildings really are light blue, but this is just a little unnatural.

All in all, very very good.

Wish it were mine.

Rad,
Thanks for your comments, they're appreciated. I agree about the distractions with the stuff in the bottom of the frame, I guess I was just lazy leaving it there. I disagree, however, with your comment about the white balance. If you look at the whitewash on the building in the top right of the picture it is as white as you can get. The street really was this colour, the locals paint all the dead-end streets this way. I'll post another shot here to give you a look at what this town is like.

Martin,

Yes, the second shot here has a much more appropriate white balance to it. It is not a direct apples to apples comparison to the original post, as this shot has much less of an exposure time (evidenced by the darkenss of the sky compared to the original post). But notice how much more of a natural blue is in the second shot compared to the cyan of the original post.

Here is a quickie Color Cast correction using PSElements 2.0. I keyed off of the childs jacket at my neutral point. I know that this pretty much wipes out the sky, but if you want to put in the effort, you can bring that back in PS. Since the sky was not a point of mine, I did not try to bring it back here. This is just more a "proof of concept", not final result.
