I'm an amateur-photographer with a Canon D30 digital camera. I like to make
photographs on Canon-RAW-format (CRW) to get best quality with least
memory-use. I placed Irfan View 3.75 on my Toshiba Tecra 700CT-notebook
(Win98 SE) intending to preview my photo's in RAW-format, when I'm on my
way. The LCD-screen of my camera is very small.
The other photoprograms I know, expect you to convert your photo's to JPG-
or TIFF-format before you can see them fullscreen. At my regret Irfan View
still works only with my JPG-format photographs.

I installed subsequently:
1. Irfan View 3.75 and all_plugins.exe in the Plugins-subdirectory (no
result)
2. all the specified specific-Canon-DLL's in the Plugins-subdirectory (no
result)
3. canon_crw.zip in the Plugins-subdirectory (no result)
4. all the specified specific-Canon-DLL's in the Win98-system-subdirectory
(no result)

The error messages when trying to view CRW-images are: 'Can't load CRW
Plugin CRW.DLL ! Please download Canon Drivers from Canon's homepage'. and
subsequently: 'xxx.CRW : CRW Decode error!' (xxx.CRW = name of the image)!

So I ask you to help me! Please tell me what I did wrong

Thanks in advance!

No experience with this software. When I started with serious digital I read a lot and stuck with the main stream of programs. Look at BreezeBrowser and YarcPlus. Yes, you have to pay some money, but you have the benefits of support, both in forums and fromthe makers.

Good luck

In another newsgroup someone gave the solution: the specified Canon-files had to be placed in the windows-system32-directory instead of in the Plugins-directory!
I understood, from the IrfanView-site, that all DLL's had to be installed in the IrfanView-Plugins-subdirectory.
Everything is working fine now! Thanks to Leon Obers; another visitor of newsgroups!

I just checked out viewing CRW files in Irfanview and got a problem! It doesn't give any errors but it just shows the embedded 640X480 thumbnail, not the actual 2048X1536 crw image (S30 camera).

If I try to Save As... another format, it saves a 640X480 image. I have all the plugins and I guess it is finding the Canon dlls since it isn't giving an error message.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

I have the same problem as Octathlon in regards to seeing the 640X480 thumbnail, not the actual 2048X1536 crw. Version 3.70 works o.k.(below), but not 3.75. Same camera (S30) also. Help.

Now, the other quandry with 3.70 is in thumbnail mode, if I double-click on the image to open, I get an error message;

"CRW decode errorHope someone has suggestions. can't load CRW file. Check your CRW file for correct name syntax: xxx_yyyy.crw".

Any help with this one?

Thank you.

octathlon,

This may help. In non-thumbnail mode, choose "options", then "properties", then the "plugins" tab, and then check the "load crw files using Canon dlls.

That solved my size problem.

MrBonez,

Thanks for your suggestion. It is now trying to load the .crw instead of the thumbnail and I have progressed to the error message you first reported about Can't load CRW plugin :~(

I can't seem to find the canon dll on my system...If I find it I will put it in the system32 directory. wish me luck :)

Did you read the note on IrfanView's plugin page? All of the info is there. You can download the needed dlls from here:
http://www.irfanview.com/plugins.html
or direct link:
http://irfanview.tuwien.ac.at/plugins/canon_crw.zip

I finally got it to work byu putting all the required dll's in the Irfanview program directory (not the plugin directory)
]
Works great now

Well, I never did get it to work. I tried putting the dll's in the program directory, the windows directory, the windows\system directory. Got the same error each time.

I noticed that it says it can't find crw.dll and that none of the required dll's in the zip file has that exact name. For the people who got it to work: Do you have a file called crw.dll?

I could not get it to work either in Irfan View, 3.8 even (a shame IV is so godd at everything else - and free), and that's how I ended up here. I gave up but then having read a few other posts elsewhere I came up with something of a work-around.

-> Set the twain source in IV to Canon PowerShot (or Canon Digital Camera).

N.B. You need to have the serial twain drivers installed. Down load them from canon (if you have XP ignore the warning about loading these drivers [don't blame me if it goes wrong though] - your not going to connect to the camera anyway).

-> Select Acquire from the File menu (Ctrl-A). This should open the Canon PowerShot software.

-> Use the 'Browse' - 'My Computer' button to select a folder containing CRW files.

-> Select the one you want to view from the Thumbnail View then press the 'Acquire' button.

-> This will open the file in IV.

You can now save the file using a lossless form at such as TIF for future use.
