This shot is a handheld indoor flash shot of my daughter. I had the flash rotated into "portrait" mode, so when Katie craned backwards to look at me, there was not enough time to get the camera into landscape mode. Talk about the decisive moment, this was one shot where I realised it was going to be good as soon as I clicked the shutter.

That is the sweetest picture, honestly. "Luck" or not, the shot itself is beautiful, aswell as your child.

:D

congrats on this pic! If you call this a 'candid', I'd love to see some portraits!

I wish I knew enough about lighting to make portraits that consistently looked as good as this. The fact is, I was lucky with a combination of natural light and ETTL-2 flash. Unfortunately, that's not attributable to my skill. What I lack in skill, I make up for with enthusiasm though, as I follow my poor little daughter around with my 20d for much of my free time :D

Thank you again, for all your comments.

We learn much by accidents. That's a sweet shot.

This is a really great picture from Simon. Totally awesome!

I ran out and bought a Tamron 28-75 Di about a month ago on the strength of Simon's results. I've had a couple of lucky moments with flash myself and since I love to show off as well, here are a couple of mine...

I know that the key for both of mine, and I suspect Simon's beautiful picture as well, is:
- a close cropped shot with uncluttered background
- powerful bounce flash from not too far away

I have an old-style Metz flashgun with no camera integration (just set the camera manually and let the flash do the metering) and when everything is just right, the results can be just great, and I put it down primarily to the power output of the flash. Flash power means more depth of field and lower ISO settings. I can always afford to bounce off the ceiling at a sensible ISO setting for lovely well exposed sharp pictures.
