*NOT 1D MKII*
I guess i hadnt really noticed because i was pretty much strictly shooting raw before i got my 1D but the other day i shot some birds in jpeg at my girlfriends, and then took it inside and took a few more snaps in jpeg. When i got home and got on the computer i realized how frequently i have to fix the WB of most my images. On my 300D i dont think i had to quiet as frequently.
Obviously the technology has advanced but i'm wondering if there is something that i could be doing wrong. I mean, AUTO white balance should be that...auto, right?

In theory yes.
But auto exposure gets it wrong, auto focus gets it wrong and auto flash gets it wrong. I would expect auto white balance to also get it wrong.
If it's important, shoot it manually, or if you like, shoot it RAW and deal with it later. :)
Cheers

most cameras i find they do a good job outside with AWB but suck indoors.

The original 1D is better than the likes of the 10D, 300D and their predecessors for WB - QED.

Hrrmmmm, then i have to wonder why i'm finding these issues. Maybe i've become too snobby?
Maybe the WB sensor is dirty :D ???

Perhaps you're just learning more. With more experience it's common to want better. Go back and check a dozen of your old 300D images and see if you still feel this way.

You can't go wrong with the old Melitta WB. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif
The brown filters give a sepia tone to the photos. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif

For Brewing? It's Melitta filters and Bruan or Krupps machines for sure!
But for White Balance.. it's Mr. Coffee all the way! ;)

You ought to copy right that and then sell them that for their next set of ads ;-)

Coffee filters. :)
After months of putting it off as "hog wash" i finally got around to playing with the white coffee filter during my 6 hour drive to the north in an RV. Within two shots based purely on my LCD alone i knew i was sold.
Last night going through my pics i was stunned. Not only were the photos less needing of a WB adjustment, but when they were on...they were far better then what i'd have patients to adjust manually in C1.
I dont think i'll leave cust. white balance very often, tonight at the b-ball game will be a good test though!

I always found the AWB to be very accurate with my 1D bodies. They were definately better than my Nikon D1H. I did do virtually all my shooting outdoors, but I found that it did a very good job getting it right, especialy on those days where the sun was in and out of the clouds. Which was when I mainly used it. If it was cloudy or sunny I just set it that way.

The only thing my 1D does that upsets me is; give me a great deal of noise in the darker colours and images taken in low light.....
during the daylight I can't fault the body.....
but as soon as I get the money I'll be buying the MK II.... I'll be keeping the original though....
