View Full Version : Colour, B&W or Tri Tone.. you decide

Today I have been playing with a couple of studio strobes, I have a ton of images to process however I have been playing around with this first one and I can not decide between the Colour or B&W version. I then made the huge mistake of trying Burgundy Gold and Black Tri -Tone and I quite like that one too.

So the question is “If I have to go with only one of them, which one should it be?”

Definately the tri-tone. Very nice!

I like the tri-tone, but I would maybe desaturate it to about half to reduce the effect slightly.

The B&W looks a little flat, the colour is really good, but I think the Tri wins by a squeak.  Really tough choice, now I'll have to go rest my brain.

I am with the others - the tri-tone is best.

Put me down for the tri-tone too. Looks great...

Tri tone all the way. B&W looks dull, color is good but tri tone has the punch.

the first version is my favourite of the lot Neil.
I prefer it

really nice shots.

but thought the others look a little chilly without the 'colour'
(for a young boy's portrait)

Tentatively, I am going to agree c marie and say color, but...

Have you tried copying the gold and layering it on top of the color shot and then playing with differnt blending modes and percentages? I just sort of futzed a little with it and I thought it looked pretty good. Makes it look like and old B&W that had been hand tinted.

Give it a try and throw even more confusion into the mix.

This is not even a question - COLOR!!!

Great shot and expression.

For a young boy, I definitely think the color works best--initially I thought the tri, but I looked some more and color is the way I'd go. I agree with Marie that B&W or tri seems too "cold" for this type of portrait. Plus the colors go together very well in the color version.

Neil, The first shot (Color) made me say "WOW!" The other two shots didn't quite have that effect on me, sorry.:)

B&W would have been better if the background was a bit brighter... How did you remove the color? Did you desaturate it or grayscale it?

My vote goes for the tri-tone!

I think the color. His skin tone is beautiful.

Thank you all for your input (except Rad, who gave me far too much to worry about  ). Life just gets more and more complicated. I have been playing with these images for hours now, and not only am I mixing the colours (colors) I am also playing with softness, luminosity perspective etc etc.

Oh for the good old days of "click" and off to the chemist.
