Storing Canon off camera shoe cord (OC-E3)

I just purchased the Canon off camera shoe cord (OC-E3). I was wondering if there would be any reason that I should not attach the two ends to each other. My reasoning for doing so would be to protect the contacts from getting dirty or scratched while the cord is not in use and stored in my bag.

Only reason not to is that it presents a bigger profile, and makes it easier for something to break; keeping each piece loose will allow it to fit into a smaller space...
