AF assist beam on 300D?

How does one get the AF Assist beam to go? I have a 420EX and my infrared beam will work but isnt the white LED/bulb supposed to light under AF without the 420EX on? I shoot with my camera in P mode... what gives?

I assume you read page 63 in the manual. The flash head has to pop up or be popped up by the user. Then in dim light, the autofocus assist will light up as small pops.

The white lamp is a red-eye reduction lamp, not autofocus assist.
