Got a new Mac along with the camera and was wonder about Aperture. How does it compare with other things out there? I am very new to all this so I really the need the help.

Wish it was for available for Windows, then I'd give you an opinion.

I use Aperture with my iMac. BTW, there is an upgrade out already that takes it to 2.1 -- you can get the upgrade by running the "Software Update" under the Apple menu after you install 2.0.

I've been using only Aperture, so it is difficult to provide you with pros and cons over other programs. Someone will chime in. I will say that I like Aperture a lot. It works seamlessly with all the other Apple products, and is very fast (much faster than v1.5). It does everything I want it to do -- and more. And the online tutorials are quite helpful.

If you are new to Aperture, I highly recommend the Apple Pro Training Series manual. You can get it on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Pro-Training-Aperture/dp/0321539931/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214451190&sr=8-1

It is basically a workbook with 12 lessons that teach you how to use the program, image organization, editing, etc. It comes with a DVD that contains various photographs that you use for practice as you work through the lessons. I've been following the workbook for a couple weeks now and am feeling quite confident with the program. I would have never figured out all the functions of this program without this book.

I use Aperture 2.1 as well about 90% of the time with about 10% CS3 when I want to do a few creative things that cannot be done in Aperture. As far as a catalog and a work flow for image correcting it is the best I have used. Lightroom is very similar as well. As many others will suggest, I would download the free trial version of each. They are the full version of the program so you will be able to do anything you would once you purchase the full version.

As tgara stated Aperture works extremely well with other Apple programs for simple integration of photos into any other projects you may be working on.

I have both Aperture and Lightroom...honestly, i use lightroom MUCH more. Workflow just seems easier and smoother and navigating, organizing and storing photos seems smoother. They both pretty much do the same thing...i think Lightroom just has a better presentation and interface.

I have been eval'ing both of these programs for the last few weeks now. I have also installed the LR 2.0 beta gratis an invite, so I have it till the end of August.

So far, Lightroom is the winner. I like the workflow of both programs, and have no problems with either one. I am partial to the editing functions that LR has over Aperture at this point, and LR 2.0 introduces some new ones. I am not going to quibble over the extra dollars that LR costs, since I have invested so much in my iMac and Camera at this point, so that is now a factor.

My advice to you would be to download the trial version of each one, try them out, see which one fits your needs.

And so much for my first post here - just signed up! Thanks for an easy thread to get started with.
