With room to expand.

Current kit is small bit growing. Need something that will hold 1-2 bodies, 2-3 lens, a flash, 1L H2O bottle, cards, small notebook(old school, not PC), a few other odds & ends.

Prefer a backpack style. Thought about a sling but do not like some of the reviews concerning weight distribution. Price range about $75-$125.

Any suggestions?

Take a look at the Kata R-103 Ruksack. Should do everything you ID but the water bottle, but I found a way to hang one off mine and it works just fine.

Or go through the Show me your camera bag (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=36952) thread. There's just about every bag made in there somewhere.

I have the NaneuPro 120 backpack and its great. I paid $90 new for it. Has room for a 15" laptop, its a bag inside a bag style so the inside comes out to turn it into a regular backpack. I am very happy with it.

Try the LowePro FastPack 350, you can take your stuff out from the side just like the slingshot but this one has 2 straps like a regular backpack. Much more comfortable.

What ever you get, don't forget a good chiropractor... I found after years of packing all my gear around with me, I now leave most of it at home and only take what I feel I will need that day and nothing more. I now have fewer problems with my back and shoulders.

would there be room in there for a canon 100-400 f/4-5.6 and two other smaller lenses? I happen to be looking for a bag almost the same as the OP and wondering how that would work with a slightly bigger telephoto lens
