View Full Version : Digital SLR Recommendations?

I'd like to pick up an SLR digital camera. After shooting film again I miss the focusing aspect of a "real" camera. I've been happier with my Canon than any Olympus I've owned due to the lack of shutter lag -- i.e. on the two Olympus cameras I owned there was a long lag between depressing the shutter button and the actual snap of the shot. I'm looking in the <$600 range if possible.
My shooting conditions are all over the place. I shoot a lot of live music in dark clubs with no flash (most promoters here will ban you from the club for using a flash), so I'll need something that will work well in low light situations. I also shoot like a "normal" consumer -- i.e. daytime, sunny, etc... So I need something versitile.
Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance!
update: I'm going to try to find a used 10D. Know of any good sites that sell used digital equipment?

if you are on budget and do not need very fast fps, weather sealing and extreme configuration settings then 20D will work well.

Definately take a good look at the 20D.
It is a very well made camera with many "pro" level features and performance. It's a great Camera to jump into a Digital SLR.

but guys he said less than 600.
The 20D is almost 1400 new and 1000 used.
Maybe a used 10D or 300D.

Used rebel is the only thing I can think of, that or hope to get a used 10D in the 700 range, but that is somewhat hard since the 20D craze died down a bit.
This is all assuming you already own a lens or two.

I found a 300D w/ lense for just over $600. I'm going to go to Robert's Camera Supply to see if they have any there to check out. Judging by the specs on dpreview the 300D and 10D are pretty close in features. I like the fact that I'll still be able to use a wireless remote with the 300D.
meh.
I should really pay more attention when reading reviews (while at work lol). I'm going to try to find a used 10D because of the 300D's manual capabilities:
There are 4 focus modes, One-Shot AF, Predictive AI Servo AF, AI Focus AF
(automatically selects One-Shot AF or AI Servo AF selected according to
shooting mode), Manual Focusing (MF). **However these modes are not user
selectable.** The camera chooses the AF mode depending on the shooting mode.
For example in the creative modes, AI Focus is used. This means that if the
subject is static, One Shot AF is chosen, but if the subject under the
active AF zone(s) starts to move towards or away from the camera, the focus
mode will switch to AI Servo AF and focus will attempt to track the subject
as it moves. One shot AF is used in most of the PIC modes, but in the Sports
mode AI Servo is used.

I think it would just be worth it for me to stick with my G3 and save even longer to get exactly what I want... or close to it.

300D is a very good Camera.. sorry about missing the price range.
$600.00 for Rebel and lens sounds like a good price to me.

Oh, by the way, what are some good sites to find used gear?
I know ebay (sometimes is good), but where else?
