I have an imac and forund sometinmes Lightroom or CS3 would hang. I put an extra 2G of memory in (I had 1G initially).
Do I need to reinstall Lightroom and/or CS3 to make sure it uses the extra memory efficiently or have I got my Lightroom/CS3 settings wrong (It hung again yesterday)

No.. You won't need to re-install it, it'll use whatever you've got in the machine.
In what way is it hanging? Are there any messages?

What's LR doing when you get the beachball?
What does the Activity monitor say? Is it "not responding"?
What version LR?

What are the other specs on your machine? RAM is great, but it would seem your bottleneck is elsewhere. Your computer is only as fast as it's slowest component.

Poke around a bit. I kept having to enter the serial # for LR every day. I had messed up the permissions and the code was not being saved. I had to use the online help to figure that one out :)

Try the procedures listed here. I expect you need t repair your disk permissions.
