hey ppl,
As you can see, I'm a total newbie, and am hoping to get into photography. And I don't even have a SLR yet...
I am hoping to get one soon, as I might go travelling in a few months. I'm interested in the 400D, main reason being: cheap for an amateur like me. Please advise me if this is the wrong approach.

The main reason I'm posting is this: As you all already know, Amazon.co.uk currently offers a rebate of £45 for 400D, and it expires in 30th June. As I am still doing my research, I can't really jump in, and I can't certainly make a decision before 30th June. What do you guys think of this deadline?

Thanks for reading.

Welcome shiunn! :-)

Well, first off, the rebate (from Canon) does expire on the 30th so not much anyone can do about this, It has been running since March or April IIRC.

The 400D is a good little camera by all accounts, I don't use one myself but many people around here do and it is capable of extremely good results. It would be an ideal starting platform for anyone in my opinion.

Of course you could spend more money on a 450D, 40D (or 1D Mk III) but if you are just starting off I'd go for the 400D or the newer 450D.

Not sure where you are from but I'm guessing the UK/Europe because of the rebate date, have you seen THIS SITE (http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/cat1.html) for the best prices?

Thanks Kevin,
That's an excellent website you've got there. Yea, I'm in the UK. Just a quick question though, if I buy from empiredirect.co.uk, will I still be able to get the rebate from Canon? And, I just need to put in an order latest by 30 June right?

Having looked at this website, my choices opened up so much, and it's more difficult to make choices now. I am now considering 400D and 450D, which is around £50 more expensive. Might be a good choice, considering the 12MP vs 10MP. What about the memory? Is SD better than CF as a media?

You have to have a receipt dated on or before 30th June so you need to hurry. The 400D is a good camera. Here (http://www.canon.co.uk/promotions/Index.asp)is the rebate page and you will see there is a cashback of £50 on the 450D too. SD or CF doesn't matter IMO. I'd prefer SD as smaller and a tad cheaper. I use both and the speed difference or capacity differences are irrelevant to me. 2x 2GB cards is a good option. Lots of camcorders are also using SD cards if you are into that.

For travelling I'd consider Sigma 17-70 or Tamron 17-50mm to go with it rather than getting the kit lens.
