I know this is “Share Photographs” but please feel free to critique.

This is my first attempt at using 2 studio lights. I have softened the images and converted them to tri-tone.

All advice gratefully received……

These are very nice. A tad soft for my tastes. I'd probably selectively sharpen a few features (eyes) just a bit.

Your wife is lovely. She's welcome to step in front of my camera anytime.

Pretty good.... How were the lights set up, what angles, positions, etc?
You only have one "catch light" in the eyes... The smile lines and under the eye lines are
too heavy on your wife (3rd shot). This is caused by the lights in the wrong angle to the face.

If you were charging someone for a "portrait", they would want their clothes
nice and neat (boys shirt). Also, face lines like I said, if they are too
prominent try and lower lights maybe, I'd have to see how you had the lights set
up in those shots....

I hope you don't mind. I take childrens (school) pics weekdays so I know how
picky parents can get... I get to go back and do "make-up day" and hear what
parents didn't like in the first shot... Oh yeah, HAIR also. They want neat hair...

Good luck,

That answers my question... ;)
I was going to ask which of these lovlies was the boy's mom, but if the blonde is your wife, the brunette must be mom, unless he's your son.

Pretty good.... How were the lights set up, what angles, positions, etc?

The technical term for my lighting setup is “Hit and Hope”

I played with a few setups and these were taken with the left hand light at eye level through a translucent brolly and a right hand light much higher angled down bouncing off a silver brolly. You can make out 2 catch lights in the eyes that are not looking down.

This really was a first attempt and I know I need to do a lot more work b4 I get anything presentable. These were a good friend and her son plus my wife, in fairness they started as willing helpers but soon got very bored indeed.

Thanks for the tips.

Thanks for the offer, I would love to see the results

Spot on 10 out of 10
