I am planning on getting the drebel and the 28-200mm canon lens. If I buy now I could get $100 rebate for the camera and another $100 because I am buying the lens with the camera. I can get the camera for $722-$100=$622 at beachcamera and the lens for $369-$100=$269. I am not planning on using the camera much until the spring. How much do you think the rebel will go down by early May? Should I wait until the spring to buy or buy now and take advantage of the rebate?

Thanks for all your help!!
Alex

Buy now.

Winter is a fantastic time for photographs, get in practice for spring too

These rebates are great deals too :)

Photography ain't about money (primarily) it is a state of mind !!

Watch that 28-200 lens...it is a consumer grade cheapy !!
Get the 28-135 IS USM and you'll never regret it !!

I'll give ya a written guarantee !!

One thing you might want to keep in mind: any long zoom lens such as a 28-200 will have more of a tendency to distort pictures than one with a smaller range. This type of distortion probably wouldn't show up noticeably except in pictures of buildings and other subjects with straight lines such as a flat horizon. Distortion can also be fixed pretty well in photo editing programs.

There are rumours of a consumer version of the 20D coming out in the next few months - but that could be complete rubbish and wishful thinking.

That'd be rubbish, it's cheap enough as it is. They're hardly gonna cut into their blossuming (sp>) 300D market.

Asking if you should buy equipment on this fourm is like asking a drunk if he wants a drink. :p

LOL

Great comments above but the TRUTH is........

It's a great deal now. And it might be a better deal in the spring. Or it might be fall before you see as good a deal again. Unless Canon replaces the Drebel, there's not a lot of pressure on them to lower the price.

Neither Olympus camera is as good.

The D70 is a great camera but costs much more.

Pentax is ok from what I know but I know VERY little because, from a market perspective, it's an 'also ran'. Ditto for the new Minolta.

So, on the whole, what if you waited 6 months and it was the same price? What if the rebates were over and it was $200 more?

One thing you can be certain of, at some point, it will be less expensive than it currently is.

If they bought out a 301D (or 400D) that had some features of the 20D it'd give them even more market share.

I will second the thoughts on the 28-200 as I had one, not a very good lens. Agree with Setiprime, go with the 28-135 IS.

I think that it will come down a lot by summer.

Thank you all for your help.

I was planning on using the 28-200mm lens for any wildlife that comes close to the camera and general photography. I also plan on getting a bigma for most wildlife. Do you guys think the extra telephoto is worth buying over the 28-135 IS?

Thanks again for all your help!

Thanks for the link Mike.

The 28-135 seems like a very good general photography lens.

No. Buy it now. There will always be something better coming out; lower prices; newer stuff. Sooner or later you must enter the arena. Enter earlier and you'll be better for it. You will have great experience by time spring is here and you'll be ready to spread your photographic wings.

Well said. To learn to use an SLR camera well will take you months and probably thousands of photos.

Hey, anything I can do to help someone else spend money. :) Helps me justify the 135mm f/2.0L. :D

But in all seriousness I bought my Digital Rebel on very short notice the morning I left for UT, from upstate NY, on my motorcycle. I am so glad I did. I took thousands of photos over the next two weeks; learned an incredible amount and became a much better photographer for it.

I'm very glad that I didn't hesitate and ponder and think and ruminate. I bought it. I put a lens on it. I slapped a dog slow 512MB CF card in it. I took a lot of pictures. And my photography is better for it. Now I know I need a 1DsMkII. ;)
