Well, first of all i love DIY projects, when they make any sense... which this one IMO does not.
You can buy these little tripods for 2€ and even if this DIY model has the possibility to "wrap it" around something i really don't see it holding a DSLR when it's attached to some metal railing etc. A compact.. maybe, but not a dslr.
Atleast not well enough for me to put my $$ hanging on it.
But hey, you can always try :)

I wouldn't . . . Maybe an SD or A-series, but nothing over 8 oz. A sturdy enough wire for a DSLR would be very difficult to bend securely into place, and the flexing would, over time, weaken the wire.
