Decided to take an afternoon run over to "Deer Mountain" just for the heck of it. Since most of yesterday we had freezing rain and ice pellets I knew that the deer would be moving alot to feed today. Happened to run accross this big boy. Seems his rut is over.http://www.pbase.com/giant001/image/38242545.jpg

Ian had that shot set up just the way he wanted it, but then the deer turned 90 degrees to the left.
Good shot, Ian.

Nice shots, Ian. In the 1st picture, the buck looks like he's not only missing an antler but also one front leg...until you look more closely, that is.

Yet again, another nice shot. Seeing as I am off, I might just have to head out there myself.

nice shot Ian. I wonder how he lost the antler. Do they fall at at some point in their life and then they grow other ones?

Deer lose their antler every year, but it seems too early for that. Could you tell if it was broken off, or just never formed?

As billsh said, bucks shed their head gear every year but it is a little early for that to happen. I got a good look at this head and the missing side did indeed fall off naturally and not in a fight or by getting hooked up in something. The socket was very plain to see. I talked to a "old timer" and he said that early shedding is a sign of an early spring. Hope he is right. Wouldn't mind if spring came tomorrow. :) :)
I'm going to head over to the mountain again this week and see if I can get some more shots of him.

I think it fell off when he fought Ian, who had his heavy camera and telephoto lens in hand, to reclaim one of the does who had the eyes for Ian. You should see the nasty dent in Ian's lens!  (Sorry, I couldn't resist! )
