Anywho, here is how stupid I am. Talking to some friends who play on my old AAA hockey team, they told me they would be playing Mexico's National under 21 Hockey team and that I should show up. As soon as I heard I thought "hey, what a great photo op"
So I make sure I the 1DMKII, 70-200, a film body just incase are all packed. Everything is set and ready to go.
I go downstairs and realize I forgot my bag upstairs. So I told my brother to do me a favor and bring the black camera bag down for me since I was wearing shoes and whatnot. So I make the trip to the arena, talk to some of the guys, get ready to get setup, open the bag and there it was. A Tamron 28-75, 10D and a film body. Well son-of-a, I packed everything in the blue bag.
With my luck as usual, I didnt get to test the new MkII on sports, ended up having to shoot with the Tamron and the 10D. Luckily, since I am good friends with the directors, coaches and players, I didnt have to shoot from the stands and got to shoot at ice level. But even then, slow AF servo, slow and short lens = lots of missed shots, got a couple good ones though.
That was such a good photo op, what a waste.............
Had to get that off my chest. Anything like this ever happen to any of you guys?

Nope. I always double-check my equipment.
At least you didn't open the bag to find some 2.1mp P&S!

I check my equipment to the point of paranoia.
Pack it. Check it. Check it before I walk out the door. Just make sure before I pull out the drive...

I once got all my gears ready to go and when I got on the location I realized that I forgot the CF card in my card reader.........!!! Now I make sure that I check everything twice.

I always have the same thing packed in each bag. My gear never gets moved to different bags. The black bag has the 10D, 20D and lenses. The green bag has my Olympus C-8080WZ and accessories. The blue bag has my film cameras. If I asked someone to grab a specific colored bag for me, I'd know exactly what they're carrying for me. It makes things less confusing. :D

No, you're not stupid......unless you do it again! If you can't learn by your mistakes, you probably won't be able to learn at all.
I have three backpacks. The green one is loaded with the 1D MkII, and a couple lenses that I usually use on that body. The black one has the 20D with a couple different lenses. The third one (the big one) is load with all the other lenses except for the big white ones which are packed in a couple Halliburton cases. Each bag has spare batteries, lens cleaning equipment, Giottos Rocket Blower, and other essentials so that whichever bag I have with me, I'll be ready for most situations.
When I leave the house, I take the appropriate bags/cases based on what I think I'm going to be using that particular day.

It's all in the big Domke upstairs, until I pack (and move downstairs) whatever bag I'm about to take out. So - whatever's downstairs goes. And I'd never ask my wife to get the camera bag for me; she's convinced that photographic overkill is a Kodak disposable, and has plenty to say about what my camera and computer bags weigh. But all the bags that actually go anywhere at some time or another have cleaning gear and card holders. Batteries and storage live with the cameras and lenses.

Cut yourself some slack. :)
At least you got a bag with a camera in it! :) :)
On a long driving trip out west I left my full kit in a coffee shop once early on, and then in a movie theater toward the end. Fortunately the bag was where I'd left it each time. After the movie theater incident I was so careful packing the bag when we left town, that I forgot my laptop in the hotel room (and got it back too)!
The worst bullett I've dodged with my new camera was walking about a mile with it in my camera backpack with the camera section unzipped and unclipped. Managed to not lose a thing. Unfortunately I think that was the cat's 8th life...

After reading this thread I was having nightmares last night. I think I'll get a diplomatic courier's cable and handcuffs arrangement for my gear!

Yep! Done that too! Turned up at a gig, no card. By the time it took me to drive back home and get the card, I'd missed two of the bands on the bill :(
So now I'm ultra-paranoid. Check batteries (flash+body), lenses, camera actually in bag, card actually in camera, bag actually in car. :)

Had something similar happen, along the lines of a missed opportunity anyway.
On a trip to Spain, me and the better half went to a restaurant where they featured flamenco dancing. We'd been before on a previous trip to Spain and the show was great. Didn't have a 300D on the previous trip so this one I was particularly looking forward to.
Had a great meal, enjoyed the show and took lots of pics. Then they did something they hadn't done at the previous show - they posed all the dancers and permitted audience members to have their pics taken with them.
Fantastic opportunity! I get to take home a nicely balanced shot of my other half with the flamenco party.
I leave my camera bag under the table, walk all the way to the front to get the best view, line up the shot perfect....
Damn card was full.

I just had a dream last night that I got to a basketball game and opened my camera case and all the lenses were in there, but not the camera body! Sorry your experience wasn't a dream.

I've run out of space on my CF card before, wondering how it was possible, then realizing that i hadn't formatted before i started shooting. So i had 40ish shots that i needed and 100 that I didnt. and i needed 100 more, so i had to format and lose those 40 :( Now i format the minute i put the card in the camera.
