I'm new to digital photography and little did I know how much I will need.

I've only got a 256mb card aswell as the included 32mb card...

2*1GB, I shoot in RAW for important stuff or in difficult conditions, jpg otherwise.

My cards, an assorted mix collected over time:

Two 2Gb
One 1Gb
One 512Mb
One 256Mb
One 128Mb
One 48Mb
One 32Mb
One 8Mb

I use the 2Gb's through the 512Mb in my 10D, 20D and Olympus C-8080WZ and the 256Mb-32Mb in my PowerShot S330. The 8Mb card, which came with the S330, is only used for my Quicken backups now.

The 48Mb card is my oldest. I bought it about 5 or 6 years ago for a no longer used Windows CE handheld (Phillips Nino). I probably paid as much or more for it than for each of the 2Gb cards...

One 128 MB
and one 40 MB card that never gets used anymore .....

1 x 512 Sandisk Ultra
1 x 256 Lexar 12 x
1 x 256 Sandisk "generic"

So far that's enough for two days of shooting (on trips for example). More than two days and I have to offload to my laptop.

mikesd

17 GB Total in Cards (CF, MD and SD)

2: 4GB Hitachi MD

1: 2GB UltraII
2: 1GB Transcend 45X
1: 1GB Viking (all thats left of the vikings)
1: 1GB SD UltraII

17 GB Total in Cards (CF, MD and SD)

I didn't know we were going to throw other card types into the mix... :D In that case, add a 128Mb SD (for my Palm Tungsten E) and a 32Mb xD (for the Olympus) to my bag of tricks.

I also have an old, original 20Gb X-Drive, but I haven't even turned that thing on in over a year.

My turn,
one 30GB Delkin Picture Pad

CF cards (in order of speed)
one 1GB Lexar 40x WA (silver) (although this is my fastest I don't trust it right now, but it is in my 1DsMkII)
one 1GB Sandisk standard
one 340MB IBM microdrive (currently in 10D backup camera)
two 256MB Lexar 12x (one of which has been washed because I left in pants pocket and later it got dipped in a river for the cause (and my absent mindeness) and it still works fine)
one 256MB Memorex (currently on loan to girlfriend along with D60 and 28-135 IS)
one 64MB Can't remember brand (in my Kodak DC4800 - this is my oldest card)
one 16MB Canon (mainly used to transfer files from computer to computer)
one 8MB Kodak (this one just patiently sits around waiting for me to be really desperate)

SD cards (again in order of speed)
one 256MB Sandisk Ultra II (currently in 1DsMkII)
one 128MB Sandisk standard (currently in ipaq pocket PC)

Planned purchases in next couple of months:
Sandisk Ultra II or extreme 2GB CF (two wanted) and 2GB Ultra II SD card. I see no reason to get anything bigger as I would start getting paranoid about loosing too many images if I got a 4GB card, but may consider if the price is right.

I have

-- 3 512MB cards for my 10D
-- 4 128MB memory sticks for my Sony 707
-- an iPod 40GB I use for music and card transfer while on the road (even with 240 hours of audio on it, it has more available HD space than my laptop!)
-- 2 250 GB X-drives (one at home, one at work)

How much memory do you think you would need for a full day's outing?

For a wedding, I'll carry 3 GB of CF cards with me, but I use only 1-2 GB.

For a day of bird photography, I can use a little more.

Take Belmondo, for example. He's got so much memory he can remember when the Dodgers were in Brooklyn.

I think you are thinking of Johnny Mnemonic with Keanu Reaves as a data trafficker who uploads data to something similar to a cortical stack.

Memory....really poor. I have to wear "idiot strings" on my mittins or else I'd leave them somewhere.
However for the MKII I have
1 x 1GB Lexar 40X
1 x 1GB Lexar 80X
1 x 512 Lexar 40X
1 x 512 SanDisc Extreme
On the road I use a 80GB external backup drive on the laptop to hold images.

I saw that only KennyG had a FlashTrax which I am looking into getting for a trip in a couple of months. I know they now make them in 20GB, 40GB, and 80G. Does anyone else have a FlashTrax and what do you think of them?

(Sorry for the slight subject change)

I guess you missed mine - I like it well enough. The images are good and the transfer speed is acceptable.

3 512mb Lexar, 1 1gb Lexar, 30gb Flashtrax and, for extended trips, laptop with 40gb drive and CD/DVD burner, 160 gb external drive

I don't have a flashtrax.. but I highly recomend the concept. Many of us have the more pedestrian "X-Drive" ... less bells and whistles but it does the job none the less.

Before I got a lot of cards,. I was quite content with a pair of cards (a 1gb and a 512MB) and an X-drive. It is a good solution and far more affordable than tons of CF cards.

I have five Lexar 1GB 80x Cf cards. I use them all on my cam, and i would use all 5 in a days outing, however i usually only use 250mb on each. Its best to spread ur pics over several cards rather then keep it on one incase it gets corrupted somehow.

Holy %$@#! You could shoot over 600 images in one outing? I was on vacation for 5 weeks this summer--out west (from here)--and only took about 1,800. What kind of stuff do you shoot?
