Here is a wide open shot I took this evening, I focused on the edge of the five. The lighting was less than superb. I used a focus chart earlier and it was spot on as well.

Yeah, that's awesome!! Glad you're happy with the adjustments that Sigma made.

Why, oh why, can't they fix their QC issues? Such a fantastic lens, but this type of thing really hurts them.

thatkatmat

Yeah, it sucks....But...if they fixed their QC, then everyone would be dropping their 50L's and we'd be less unique....;):D

I finally went on a walk tonight and toyed around with the lens some. Here are a couple samples, nothing fancy:

I think the focusing issue is blown way out of proportion. I used this on my late 40D and 1D2 and there might have been a tad bit front focusing, but not enough for me to notice.

I finally went on a walk tonight and toyed around with the lens some. It does NOT like focusing on stop signs, IT decides whether it wants to front focus, back focus, or not focus on anything at all, and it does it in any random sequence it likes.

^^^^Thats not right, it should act like any other Pro fast prime..

(Side note)..I figured out why I described the AF as "jittery", I'm used to Canon USM, when the Canon USM stops, its smooth, like there's a kind of brake, like on your car. When the Sigma HSM stops, it's more abrupt. Like there's a pin that drops into a cog....So when you're trying to achieve focus and "pumping" the AF, it feels a bit "jittery"....It's accurate, it's fast but it's jerky.
Anyways, just thinking out loud.

..So I sent inn my sigmalux about a week ago, and now I've got an email from the shop where I bought it, saying that the technician found it to be working properly with their reference camera. They wanted me to send in the camera, so that they can adjust the lens to the body. But I can't understand why I have to do that, when my 5D focuses perfectly with my 100mm f/2.0 and with my previous 70-200mm f/4 IS?

They also said that if I sent in my 5D, they wanted me to specify which aperture I wanted the lens to be at it's sharpest? I have never heard of this:confused: Focus shift at different apertures? They said that there are many other lenses having this problem, but that it is more present with the Sigma 50mm.

Hi. I just took some pics using this lens in a faculty gym last monday.
I used this settings:
ISO 1600 (Max. value for my XSI)
Av set to 1.6
no flash
Tungsten white balance

I could take some pics with 200 - 400 shutter speed. I got some nice pics, but I think they are not totally sharp, may I needed more speed

comments?

Bah! Got my lens today, and it has focus issues. When focusing close (subject 3 feet away) and shooting at f/1.4, I have to dial in +13 in my 5dmkII micro-adjust, whereas if I'm focusing on something that is 30 yards away, leaving it at 0 results in the sharpest image. Unacceptable. However, rather than return this to Adorama, I'm going to go ahead and send the lens to Sigma, as it does show flashes of brilliance.

For those that returned the lens, and got it back in just a couple of weeks, is the 1-800-896-6858 phone number the best way to reach Sigma and arrange service?

I will say - shooting something at f/8 - the lens is incredibly sharp, great color.

Quick question about my Siggy; so when I Micro Adjust to accomodate front focus, at <F2.5 its perfect; but then when it reaches >F2.8 the lens becomes back focused.. if I set MA to 0, <F2.5 I get front focus but at >F2.8 the focus is spot on.

is this common or am I doing anything wrong? sorry please help..

Focus accuracy is not too great wide open -maybe due to such a thin dof- but it's no worse than 85L.

This thread has been killing me, so I just went out and got a sigmalux! It is pretty awesome. Not sure if there are any issues with my copy, but for now I am gonna assume its the 1.4 and that I need to learn to wield it properly (although it seems to be front focusing slightly). I used to have the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM.

The Canon suffers from strong chromatic aberration, and the AF system is slow (compared to other USM lenses) and kind of flaky. It's the only lens I've ever owned that had to go in for repair -- it just stopped working correctly one day. I recognize that this is anecdotal, but it seems others have had similar problems with the AF drive on their Canons.

For a little bit more money, the Sigmalux handily beats the Canon in the image quality department. Build quality, to my eyes, is pretty much the same, but as you might have read, there are quality control issues with many people having to send theirs in for calibration. If you have a body with AF micro-adjust, it's a no brainer.

Also, if you're buying new, the Canon comes with the standard one-year warranty. The Sigma is significantly longer (7 years here in Canada, if memory serves).

That's good to hear. I'm hopeful that the lens will perform to my expectations. My friend bought a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for his Nikon D300 about a year ago, sent it in about two months after he originally purchased it, then didn't get it back till 4 weeks later. He was very pleased with the work they did, but it was out of his possession for awhile. So that was kind of the timeline I was expecting.

I have both, and my experience is that the image quality is much better from the Sigma lens - if you prefer the very smooth bokeh (it's even too smooth for some) . My Canon 50/1.4 has lots of CA at large apertures.

However, focusing is a bit all over the place with the Sigma lens. I use the Canon for indoor sports and AI Servo, and the Sigma lens for all other 50mm needs when there's time to get the focus right or try again. When focus is spot on the Sigma is great, but even though the Canon lens is also inexact with AF I think it's still a bit better.

I have to use MF. Auto focus will not work accurately. Kind of strange since the kenko works perfectly with the 24-70L.

I found a thread on another forum where someone was complaining about the lens vignetting at f1.4. So I ran the Sigmalux and three of Canon's finest through a test with the Canon 1DsM3. The 50mm shot was late at night and of a bathroom cabinet so I wouldn't disturb my sleeping wife. The others were of the bedroom wall under fluorescent light. The second shot is with the 85mm L II at f1.2.

advaitin

Next up the 135mm L at f2 and the 200mm L IS at f2. The 200 has just a bit less vignette, but this is an example of how easy it is to find fault with a lens if one doesn't run comparison tests to see what the standard is.

Shot wide open. The bokeh is honestly the most appealing of all 50mm primes, in my opinion. Image is straight RAW > JPEG conversion via in camera.

Just got it back from calibration and the thing is ridic sharp and focus is spot on. And ... I jizzed, in ma pantsss.

I read somewhere on here that the Sigmalux has a 10 year warranty. Seems a little long, I can only find info on a total of 4 years of warranty (1 year international + 3 years USA).

What's the warranty on this lens? I'm dying to try one out after a great Sigma 30 f1.4 experience.

Could also be due to the fact that the DOF is narrower when using FF cameras, and some of the so-called focus errors are actually user error due to a DOF of a few inches?

Total of 5 years I think.

3 years standard and when you register it online, you`ll get an extra 2 years of coverage.

I`m talking about USA warranty only.

The Canadian distributor of Sigma lenses provides a 10 year warranty for the lenses. Perhaps that is what you have heard about.

hi all...have found a new problem with my sigma 50mm...I can focus on close object fine, but when I try to focus on something further say 50 feet away the focus is completely off...what sort of problem am I facing???

I did try to MA it and it and the result is -16!!! it now focus fine on far object but the focus is off for closer object so I'm guessing sending my body+lens to sigma is the only sure way to resolve this...sigh...

When you did this near/far test, was the aperture something other than f/1.4?

If so, this is called "focus shift". It is inherent to the design.

Basically, as the diaphragm opens up, the focus point shifts. I have the same problem: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=7909206&postcount=18

its at 1.4 but happen also at 2.8 you mean its "NORMAL"??? but happen at 2.8 as well so I don't think its focus shift...with close object say 5 foot its good 0ma but arouns 30 and beyond evean at the same 1.4 the focus is screwed...only adjust-16ma seem to fix it...but then the focus for closer object is screwed again...

No, neither of mine do/did that, I've read about it but no, it's not normal, I'd send it in or exchange it...If it's front or back focussing that's one thing....But this is something all together different.

I love this lens very much...however with so much focus problem I think I'll get the canon 50 1.4 , it is not as sharp @1.4 and its a super old lens design...hope the canon focus well...I'm really tired of testing...really wanted the sigma to work...oh well...

<rant> Not to be harsh, but I'm really sick of seeing things like this stated in this thread. I got a brand new lens that didn't focus on anything accurately, at all. I have shot SLRs and DSLRs for longer than I care to admit. I was shooting split-prism manual focus for years and years. I know when an AF lens can focus, and when it can't, and so do a lot of the people who have had problems with this lens.

It's not "most are user error", although I'll admit that people are spooked about this lens now, and some may claim issues without thoroughly testing the lens. There's very real problems with the AF of this lens, which can be fixed with calibration. Mine's spot-on now.

Sorry, it just gets old. </rant>

Hence why I used the word "some" - if it's true that there are more people with complaints with the 5D and 5D2 it suggest that some of the reported focus problems might be due to a narrower DOF or poor AF performance by these these cameras in conditions where the lens might be used (for example in low light).

I'm sure there has been problems with a lot of lenses, but I also think some of the reported AF issues have been due to user "error" (narrow DOF/camera AF issues being attributed to the lens).

Enough talk - I love my Sigma, here's one recent shot from my trip to Istanbul:
