Finally got around to sending my 50 into sigma for calibration....kept back-focusing & shifting focus at long distances.:(
But, I should've sent the 50 in a long time ago. Sigma NY was extremely quick, and my lens seems to be working great so far.

One of the first captures with this awesome lens. My camera may need to go in for service though.
What say ye? Or is this performance expected of the 20D? I'm new to it.

From a digital neg - originally shot on a 1Ds/Siggy 50 1.4. First one - a touch overcooked and the neg probably needs tweaking....

I have subscribed to this thread, and will be keeping an eye out for a Sigmalux to go with my new 5D.
I really liked the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 on crop although it suffers from a bit of barrel distortion compared to the Sigma 50 (I saw this when using the lens correction in LR). I'm sure I will like the Sigma 50 on FF even more. :)

What's "best" is of course a matter of taste, but "smoothest" it certainly is.
Some like more "interesting" bokeh though.

You know, my mother always told me something very similar to that whenever I got into one of those "no girl will ever like me because I'm ugly" moods.
There is definitely something to be said for interesting bokeh, though, as long as its not unquestionably bad (and plenty of lenses produce unquestionably bad bokeh). But, Davie82's image as case-in-point, the Sigmalux frequently gives me images that make me wonder if I didn't sleep-edit and blur out the bokeh in Photoshop.

I'd say the average price for a used one on this forum is more like $420. I definitely wouldn't pay $450 for a used one when I could get a new one with a warranty for $50 more! If I were you, I'd check the Abe's of Maine site a lot, as occasionally they sell them for around $450 new. I don't know what brings this about, though.

Nice, now only if Sigma would finish the whole lens with the new finish. The new coating looks good, but it looks half-assed since the focus and zoom rings (70-200mm os) still have the old finish.

What's this about a new version? Never kept tabs on the Sigmalux but I'm a tad interested in buying it in the next 3-6 months  Is it a new paint job or something else?
Edit: Just went back to the last page. The new finish looks better, I never liked the old finish. Does it feel much different/better? I've used a 70-200 with the old finish but I can't remember how it felt exactly

Well +13 merits a send-back...but what's your definition of "not sharp" at f/1.4? I think one thing people do with this lens is expect too much from it because of its reputation and price tag. Even the 50L isn't exactly "sharp" wide open.
That being said, mine is pretty awesome at f/1.4...I'd have no problem making a 20x30 print of a shot with a subject near the center of the frame. Of course, you need sharpness too far to the left or right at that aperture, the honeymoon is over. But at, say, f2.8 or above, usually have to double check that I'm actually viewing at 100%.

Well I hope it comes back perfect!
You know, since I moved to FF, I've noticed a few things that really bug me about this guy...all of which reside in the borders and corners. For one, there's the obvious border softness (to be expected), but what I didn't expect was the effect the borders would have on bokeh. I would say that bokeh becomes pretty ugly once you hit about 15% from the edge of the frame. It gets rather sharp and "triangular," which is odd.
And here's the most bizarre thing: what happens to OOF highlights at the corners wide open (in cases where, admittedly, one probably shouldn't be shooting wide open). Here's a crop from the upper left corner of an image that represents about 1/6 of the total picture. It's not 100%, as a 100% crop isn't necessary to show the effect.
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/838/img1959xv.jpg
Weird eh?
Having said that, I do think this is a fantastic lens overall and I feel like I'm going to be tempted to use it as a walkaround fairly often. You just have to be careful to work within its limitations!

mine as 1109XXXX, it was front focusing very badly. It's now with sigma for calibration.
damn...and the bad news just continues...one would have thought by now sigma have resolve the damn focus issue...damn sigma...
on bright daylight and close subject...my sigma require 0ma but during low light and subject that are further away it requires -15ma...I suspect many sigma 50 1.4 suffer from this as not many have tested them as viciously as I have...oh well...just have to live with this for now...

You would have thought Canon would do the same with their L series 50's as well. I've been very happy with mine as it's been consistently spot on since the get go.

I thought they haven't added the floating element thingy which the 80LIIhave to the 50l to solve the focus shift error...which sucks really for such a nice lens...the focus shift occur on all 50L just hat it varies between copies....glad to hear you're happy with urs...
I would buy the 50L if canon update it to 50L II with the floating element or something like that to solve the focus shift....better still if canon god damn update the 20yr++ old 50 1.4 with better sharpness and bokeh than the sigma, I would buy it in a heartbeat! this would have been the upgrade of the century as many have waited for canon to update it since last century :(....but sadly till today with photokina they is still no news on the 50 1.4 replacement...damn you canon!!! god damn UPDATE the 50 1.4!!!!

I need to ask something here, why does the topic say Sigmalux? Is this a slang term adopted by photographers for this lens.
It's like the leica summilux lenses. Lux means Light for light gathering abilities.
Lux could also mean luxury for their ex designation.

A 50 1.4 update would be nice. I'm afraid that a new 50L would be astronomical in price. The new L primes are getting ridiculous in price (IMO)

All L lenses are ridiculous in price, as are current 1D/1Ds cameras. That's why many people buy preowned and save a fortune, or buy Sigma

Still a bit unsure about my copy of this lens. I sent it in for calibration and it is better, but I still have a lot of MA dialed in. It could be user error or unreasonable expectations I guess.
Anyway here is my son at 1.8

The sad thing is that my theory is kinda playing out and there wont -be- any more non-L full frame lenses...if the 50 f/1.4 got updated it would become a 50mm f/1.4L, probubly $750-$800 in terms of price on top of it

I bet you're right. With Nikon's newly released prime prices, Canon has no competition to force them to sell lenses for cheap. They can make them all L's and super expensive and still compete with their main rival. If I was Sigma, I would be really upping my game right now in QC...

Gunawane - focus actually looks fine but it seems like you had some camera shake/dog movement going on. If that's how your shots with this lens look when it's on a tripod and perfectly focused on a static object, then it definitely has issues that merit a sending-back!

Well, I just got mine back from C.R.I.S. It's even worse now than before. I tested it extensively in good light today and it needs -20 at long distances and +10 at close distances. So there's no way to adjust it in camera since front focuses close up and back focuses far away. I'm really disappointed.
It also has some kind of smudge or something on the shutter blades that wasn't there before. Weird.

I really haven't used the 135L up close much, but I've done a few test shots and they're pretty close. The Sigma is pretty darn sharp at f2. I've been using the 135L for long, full body portraits, so the bokeh hasn't been as creamy. I'll try it for headshots and see what it does. I've only had it for about a month or so. Still getting used to it.....unlike the Sigma, which i feel like I was born with.

It's taken me a little while to get used to the razor sharp DOF but I think I am getting the hang of it. The in focus area drops off so quick it kinda reminds me of my old contax 45 f2 planar lens. It's pretty unforgiving but if you nail the focus the results can be great.
Please forgive the quick shots of my kids. They are my main subject matter these days.

Well, I can tell you, I've had two of these new-finish type 50's and I thought the first one had focus issues. To be perfectly honest though, I'm pretty sure it was me, that was the problem. The very thin DoF takes practice to get used to.

^ - The Siggy really is a fantastic lens, only issue is the AF problems that some experience. I had to send mine to Sigma, but its been perfect ever since I got it back.
I've got the 35 f/2 and I'm amazed at how good that little thing is; I might consider the L someday, but the 35 f/2 has me covered for now.

yah i know about the AF issues. small hassle for what you get for the money.
I might sell my 35L for the 24LII/Sigma 50 combination... not sure yet though. i think I am going to buy the Sigma 50 and see how it impresses me.... if it does then ill sell the 35L and get the 24LII to pair with this lens.
