View Full Version : Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM -SIGMALUX-

Finally got myself a Sigmalux! :D
First impressions:
(+) Exceptionally creamy bokeh
(+) Very usable sharpness wide open
(+) Great sharpness from around f/2.2 onwards
(-) Noticable greenish bokeh-fringing at f/1.4
(-) AF is sometimes a bit hit-and-miss compared to my 30mm f/1.4 and my 85mm f/1.8
I'll wait and see how the AF thing works out. So far, it's not too terrible.
Since I plan switching to a 7D later this year, I'll probably wait and see how it performs on that camera before deciding on sending it in for calibration.

Got the replacement a few days ago! The previous lens was making some ugly noises when it focused. The new one also has the updated rubbery exterior which does does not seem to scratch easily. Here are some random pics wide open.

Neil great pics! I love the look you give to them. Regarding the softness you mentioned did you try microadjusting the focus? My new Sigma focuses fine on close subjects but needs some adjustment for longer distances, but I can live with that for the moment!

But if you are fine up close and adjust for more distant shots doesn't that make the closeup shots oof now?

What I meant was that if I have to shoot distant subjects I instantly dial in the correction and go back to zero for close up! I know I can't have both with one focus setting! :)
edit: What I am describing happpens on the 7d, while on the 5d it works fine with all distances with zero adjustment.

Was anyone's lens sharp without calibration? I figured I'd try my luck with the sigmalux if it's less prone to focus problems in comparison to the 30

yes, they are not a bad lens at all, they have a little QC issue, but not super serious, people tend to look harder for issues with 3rd party lens, then with canon. canon lenses have issues as well, Google for 50mm L issues and laugh :D
mine is spot on without MA, or sent back for calibration, it was my second copy, my first copy had a common issue, it focus shifts at under 10 feet, or over 10 feet, so it might be spot on under 10 feet, and way off over or visa versa,
if you have the option locally, go camera shop and test it out if they let u, if not buy it then test it out and return to shop until get a good one~ I prefer to exchange with the shop in my exchange peroid then to send it to service right when get it
and if there wasn't good copies then people wouldn't rave over this lens, and be 300 pages of images :P

I can openly talk about Nikon on here as well. Tough if you don't like it. Sure, I won't receive many serious replies as there are only a few Nikon shooters on here. I prefer this forum over the Nikon forums (as I also own a 7D). Funny, how I don't give Canon shooters a hard time when they're on the Nikon forums.

technically you can, but from logical point it doesn't make sense why someone would want to. I'm not trying to tell you not to, don't mis-understand that. Point is Lens sample forum is for samples for Canon lenses, 3rd party lenses made for Canon and Lenses moded to work on Canon, discussing Nikon, Sony etc.. in the same place can just confuse people.

not trying be rude, i shoot with nikon sometime, it just common since that your in a canon forum in a lens sample thread would best bet to look on a nikon forum or flickr,
so yes u may find 1 or 2 people on a canon forum, with a nikon, and a sigma 50mm, posting images in the lens samples.... but that not very likely
it not a nikon vs canon thing, nikon makes great products. just your in the wrong place :S
and honestly you wont be able to look at an image and say that came from a nikon/canon/sony

As an example of close focus wide open or nearly so. Flower at f1.8, eyebrow at f1.4, both on 5D M2, ISO 200. The hard part is determining what is in focus. I have a new focusing screen coming. Maybe it will make a difference. The Sig is sharp--somewhere, if not where you are looking. I do like the bokeh, however.

even good for portrait work

Just a quick question for anyone who may have ordered this lens from B&H as of recent... I just sent my Canon 50 1.4 back to B&H after obtaining my RMA form and elected to exchange it for the Sigma. I called a little too close to closing time so I didn't have time to verify that they are shipping out the "new" finish only these days. I just read about 30 pages back about the new finish and that was the ONLY reason I didn't want to give this guy a try. Forgive me if this has been discussed but I'm heading off to work and can't read through the last 30ish pages. :o Thanks for the help guys.

Sorry, poor wording while in a hurry. My question: Is B&H ONLY shipping the NEW finish Sigma 50 1.4 or is there still any remote possibility that I may end up with an old finish copy. Thanks for your time. :D

Outstanding! That's what I was hoping to hear. The only reason I asked is because B&H's website doesn't state and the pictures still show the old finish. Can't wait till she gets here. :D

I've had my re-calibrated Sigma 50 on my 5D2 since last week and never really did any critical testing. Skipped work today to do some ordering for the kitchen remodel and did the lens calibration method suggested on Northlight Images. Surprisingly, the Sigma was only a +1. At 1.4 MFD its super sharp. Hopefully I'll have some time Sunday to get out and shoot. You'll really like this lens. Don't be too bummed if you immediately have to send it to Sigma for calibration. Mine started screeching like a banshee 2 months after I got it. They may be temperamental, but at the price point/image quality you can't beat it.

It's not this soft. it's front-focusing at the first two images. F1.4 focused between 1 and 2, F2 focused at 1.

Thanks for your input. Now the question is whether it was an error on my part, or if the error lies in my lens. I need to do more tests. Here's one I did earlier at f1.4 that came out a little better:

First of all, if you are testing lens sharpness, don't use autofocus for that. Mount your DSLR on the tripod and use the LiveView with 5-10x magnification for precise manual focus. Sigma 50/1.4 is one of the sharpest lenses in this class at f/1.4, better than Canon or Zeiss. Trust me, I had one ;).

It is wide open, but you get that on other fast 50s as well.
Also the 50L will give you additional purple fringing and the 50mm f/1.4 will give you softness. ;)
The perfect fast 50 has not yet been invented.

I don't think the CA is the result of it being out of focus. Check this out:

I manual focused this one, and the CA is gone. But if you zoom in 100%:

It seems actually a tad blurrier than the other. I think this is the one that's out of focus, tbh. Maybe I'm seeing things. Here's the old one again:

My theory is that the CA is inherent in the current ultra fast prime lenses when sharp.

im going to try to manual focus and see if that goes away....
i get really sharp pictures 2.8 and up but 1.4 and 1.8 look very soft

The pictures shouldn't be totally soft... but I think CA is something that you're just going to get when wide open and focused well. Pretty sure the Canon 50 L has the same problem.

Every 50mm f/1.4 lens I've ever had (a whopping three of 'em!) has halated like that at least a bit wide open around highlights. The CA is perhaps a bit strange, but not out of the question. Remember, you're shooting white text on a black body (with flash?) at what appears to be close to MFD. You can't expect a great result out of that. This lens is known to be a bit weak near MFD to begin with.

Throw it on a Tripod in live-view mode and manually focus on some text or something. On your screen, zoom in as much as you can. See how sharp it gets. If it is sharp (which it probably will be), you have a focus issue. If it's not sharp even when manual focusing, you've got a dud.

Here is a very good article on this topic of lens softness.

And a great calibration article:

I got mine 1 month ago and i think it is really sharp wide open although it needed +10 microadjustment on my 5d2. Here is a shot wide open, jpeg SOOC

I'm STILL lovin' this lens more than my 135L... I just cannot get that lens right  even using outter focus points I cannot miss w/ this lens, its so sxe & tack sharp even at 1.4... I'm 'this' close to throwing in the towel on the 135.
