Some lovely pictures here. I've just returned my 2nd Sigma 50mm 1.4 today, even with +20 m/a (on both copies) it front focus. Such a shame because it's a great looking lense. Whilst in the store I tested the Canon equivalent which was sharper and had less C/A @1.4 I'm going back to the store tomorrow to either try a third Sig. or get the Canon.

If bokeh quality is important to you at all, I would keep trying with the Sigma. It's got the best bokeh of any standard-and-wider lens I've ever used, and is miles and miles better than the Canon's!

what did you think of the autofocus on canon in comparison to the sigma in terms of speed, noise and accuracy?

The Canon grabbed a/f quicker on my 5dii, it was quieter and more accurate in my brief test. The Canon also seemed like a little toy next to the Sigma which is not really an issue. I'm not putting a downer on the Sigmas, I love my 85 but sometimes my 85 doesn't always hit focus at longer distances.....which bugs me for example, I'll shoot at 30feet and the subject appears a little soft, perhaps a tad front focused at that length. Something I'm not sure can be rectified....??

I want to persevere with the Sigma, it took me 3 attempts to find an 85mm copy which mated with my body, albeit +1 m/a. I just felt relief when I tried the Canon and when viewing crisp images on the LCD (and now PC) instills me with some sort of belief that the cheaper Canon is better.

I love the Bokeh, build quality, and dimensions of the Sigma, I don't like the unreliable nature of the a/f, thus far. Excuse my ramblings :)

So I got my second copy of this lens on Monday and its seems like I have a winner in terms of AF. No front-focus or back-focus issues. However the AF is a little more inaccurate (it misses from time to time at wide open apertures) then I would like it to be but overall pretty happy with the AF this time around.

The only gripe Im having is Im not sure if my shots are sharp as they should be at wide open apertures. I dunno Im being too harsh in judging the lens or what. Maybe Ill post some sample shots wide open and see what you guys think.

Oh and I think B&H sent me someone else's returned copy.... I could swear it looked used when it arrived but since the AF looks spot on Im not going to go through the whole return it and get another copy.

All in all pretty happy this time... just gotta make sure my copy is similar in sharpness to others out there!

Just got this lens and this is the result. once I knew it was no good I didn't do much testing but I think it was front focusing, not sharp and very bad CA all over.

Suspect misaligned internal lens.

Now waiting for Fed Ex to collect.

Funny thing is, the pics were taken in raw and when opened in ACR or Lightroom 3 the halo went, quality still no good tho, no amount of adjustments would make it come back, don't understand this.

This jpg was made in FastStone, only program I have that could read raw files and convert without changing the halo.

Here's hopping the next one is better.

I feel like I may have the same problem. Mine seems like it's also back focusing at farther distances. It also has a hard time locking focus in back lit situations. I think that may be a common issue though. Let me know what they say when you call them. All those issues aside. It's still probably my most used lens. I need to send it in again though it looks like. I wish I just had a perfect copy and I could stop thinking about a 50L.

Trouble is the Canon 1.4 is ropey wide open and horrid bokeh, and the 50L has inherent focus-shift issues which are due to its design. Try photographing a half-body or head / shoulders portrait at about f2-f3.2 and watch the eyes blur and the ears become sharp!

I can live with the inferior bokeh so long as the focus is accurate/sharp.

because i know sometimes the sun appears as a black circle, but this doesn't look to be the case here, and you are sure that isn't your sensor right?

I agree with Bedojo...that looks like it could be sensor-related. Can't say I've seen anything like it before though, so who knows?

I can live with the inferior bokeh so long as the focus is accurate/sharp.

Then you and I can never be friends! :D

The bokeh is honestly the main reason I've kept my Sigmalux as long as I have, through several internal debates as to whether or not to sell it. I would much rather have a 35mm prime, but the Canon 35/2's bokeh is just awful. I don't really like the 50mm FL all that much, but it's the only FL at which I can afford a nice f/1.4 AF prime. If Sigma made a 35/1.4 that didn't cost too much more than the Sigmalux (or even if the Samyang weren't so freaking huge), I'd be all over it and simply carry my super-tiny Pentax-M 50/1.7 in case I really needed a 50.

Of course, were I able to scrounge up enough money for a 35L, the debate would immediately become "shouldn't I just use this money for an X100?" ;)

Good memory Matt!
But I just read through a bunch of the forum, and it looks like it may have been a mis-compensation issue with his 5D Mark II (He said the store guy put the lens on the store's Mark II and there was no problem).

I used the Vivid Jpeg option in PSE9 IIRC. and did some smoothening on her face because it was showing minor imperfections. I think the color pop was mainly due to the direct sunlight thats hitting her face.

Single point AF placed in the dog's face or her forehead (IE nowhere near what actually is in focus), Shutter speed is definately high enough, Dog is obviously not moving much (if at all) There have been other occasions where this has happened, Not just with the dog but with anything where there is a light source behind the subject..

And heres a couple that came out fine

It might even be a general focus consistency issue, But said issue makes me hesitate to take the lens out and use it if i go somewhere now...One big problem is in the viewfinder the image looks perfectly in focus because it only renders DoF equivalent to f/4, Big difference in DoF between f/2 and f/4....

After doing lots of research and finding lots of bad reviews I had my doubts about this lens. I went to the store the other day and tested the Sigma out aswell as the Zeiss 50 1.4 ZE. To my surprise I ended up buying this lens; I loved it that much. Hopefully I should be adding to this thread in the next day or so.

Yup got a great first copy. Even my Sigma 50 first copy was pretty good but I was just being really nit-picky. If my camera had micro-adjust I am 100% sure I would have been able to dial in the first copy just fine too.

But my second Sig50 the AF is perfect. In terms of sharpness I compared it to my 85mm at F/1.4 and its similar so no complaints there either. First Sig50 copy was sharp as well at F/1.4 but it was front-focussing enough to bother me.

Overall very happy with my two Sigma's... impressive pieces of glass IMHO.

13 of 88 photos missed focus
4 of the 13 could be saved
no rhyme or reason for missing, all were at 1 pm - 3pm shot in shade, sometimes strong backlight, but even strong back light it hit most of the time
the ones that missed were mostly f 1.8 a few 1.4's and 1.6's and 2 f 2.0's

first off, nice processing and shot.

13 of 88 missed, huh.... thats too many missed imho. I think I had maybe 5 of 75 missed for no reason and they were F/1.4, F/1.6, F/1.8.

But to me at apertures like that... that is acceptable. I have had Canon glass miss in similar fashion.

Generally speaking 5-7% of shots missed in the ranges of F/1.4 - 2.0 is acceptable by my standards. The DOF is so shallow its bound to happen.

Maybe go out and shoot some more at F/1.4 - F/1.8 and see if your missed shots go down. Is this your first taste of F/1.4 glass ? I know when I got F/1.4 glass initially I use to miss way more but then my technique improved and the number of missed AF shots went down. Also I found that F/1.4 and F/1.6 are quite a bit more shallow then F/1.8 and F/2.0 in terms of AF misses. That extra quarter and half a stop really get shallow.

Agree sort of, But sometimes, there really isnt a reason for it to happen, IE i know in my instance, Theres no reason for it to miss focus, and when its missing its missing by more than just a hair, a hair off in terms of focus can be explained by breathing, a gust of wind, something like that ever so slightly moving you or the subject back or forewards

But then the entire image looks like this:

I believe my rate is just roughly the same, if not only a bit worse, but then I'm usually on the outside AF points on my 5D, which apparently aren't that great. You aren't alone :p

I got used to it though. Still a razor sharp lens and the bokeh is very pleasing, so I let it go. Of course the 50L costs way too much for my poor student budget and has its own problems.

+1, The only other 50 i like (Thats Canon mount at least) is the 50L, which is a lot of money and has its own issues (Focus shifting)

I'm just telling myself that if i send my lens and 7D to Sigma they'll get my problem ironed out with a good calibration and firmware update :)

Im with you 100% if the out of focus images look like this. Mine certainly are not doing that when missing focus but then I havent really had the lens that long either....

So in a nutshell your saying that your lens misses focus like this when the subject is backlit?

Yup, I have other examples that are less extreme, but are still WAY off and not a simple "i was breathing" issue....

Any of the ones of her on the couch gave me issues depending on the angle, and this one of her sitting in front of the window took over 50 shots before i gave up and manually focused it (I threw out all the bad images sadly, but you can see the situation)

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5212/5538735975_c017b8da40_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/kitsunetsukiphoto/5538735975/)

I tried to force the problem to happen yesterday, and I did manage to get it to happen in the kitchen by placing my 100L in front of some light colored items, The lens severely backfocused for no reason and the 100L was completely out of focus, The 100L had adequate lighting, and the focus point was entirely on the 100L with plenty of room around it, Plus theres good enough contrast (say on the name badge of the lens) where that shouldnt have been an issue

If i replaced the 100L with a lighter colored can, it worked fine...Basically for some reason my Sigmalux will not focus on a subject if its darker than the background or items around it (Yes, Single point AF guys..)

I have had some in the mall where it refused to focus on things, and im pretty certain now its the same problem (IE here, i had to manually focus this one too)

Here's hopping the next one is better.

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n633/martinwedge/Halo-1.jpg

Thought it might help someone to give an update on this lens.

I received a replacement lens and tried it, I could not believe it was just the same as the first one, right back it goes, no, do some testing with this one.

It did seem to be sharper, on my 50D, so I tried it on my 30D NO FAULT FOUND what's going on here? Is the picture style different? no both the same.

So I went thought the menu of the 30D to see if I could see anything that might cause the halo to be on one camera but not the other, couldn't see anything. I then looked at the 50D menu, which is bigger and more complex, and spotted PERIPHERAL ILLUMINATION CORRECTION could this be the problem?

I disabled it and hey presto it worked or rather it didn't, I could not reproduce the halo in raw or jpg. Cracked it !! ok so I would have to change the setting when I used my other lenses, no problem with the 'My Menu' setting on the 50D, quick and easy.

I read the section about peripheral illumination in the manual and found that by connecting the camera to my PC and using 'EOS Utility' I could see what peripheral illumination was selected by my camera.

Nothing near the Sigma 50 was sellected, in fact peripheral illumination only works on Canon lenses, not third party ones, so it seems. So the camera thought the Sigma lens was a Canon ?? but which one? ( lens or camer fault, I don't know, but probably lens as my other Sigma lenses work OK )I unselected all lenses in the EOS Utility and then selected only the Canon lenses that I have, OK'd it to set it in the cameraa aselectednd set peripheral illumination to enable on the camera.

And now every thing is working as it should, no halo, but I should not have to do this work round to get rid of the halo.
The lens? yes it is sharp when it hits focus, distance setting seems not to have an effect ie. back/front focus, but it is very unreliable on hitting the spot.

I will keep it because it seems sharpness is quite good, if I change it again it might not be, and I will take it into Sigma for calibration when I come back
from holiday.

Hope this will help someone

that is funny i thought P.I.C only affects jpegs, maybe it puts a flag in the raws to auto correct when entering dpp/lightroom/ camera raw.
anywho, i never use it ~.~
i dont shoot jpegs , and i only have 1 canon lens that i don't even use lol. but if i were to shoot jpegs i would probably turn it on.
i have been through a few lenses, kit lenses, tam 17-50 2.8 , 17-40L, and a few other lenses, and sigma 50 is the only one i use :O 90% the time
lightroom/camera raw has alot of 3rd party lens profiles :)

Yes I think you are right, but this lens should not register on the camera as having P.I.C. because it does not have it for the camera. Lightroom does have it and the lens is recognised in there, when the iffy raw pics were loaded into light room the halo was corrected but jpgs were not.
And as I only shoot raw that was a problem that could be fixed, but you shouldn't have to.

that is very strange :O, esp~ you have the same problem with 2 different sigma 50's
maybe there is a custom function or something turned on in the 50D, i have used my sig 50 on my 7d, friends 5d2 his 40d, and never got funky halo :O
maybe try restoring 50d to factory settings
:S, dunno.

You could be right, but it should be able to cope with any settings on my 50D. Will try it when I get time, will have to make a note of all my current settings, reset, then put it back to where it is now, then probably reset P.I.C. in EOS utility :(

It can be edited in DPP, but most of the "effect" is done while taking the photo itself.

I can relate to your concern; I read all of the negative hype and shot test shots and charts until I was blue in the face. But keep in mind, your exif says you were at .7 meters, what I'm assuming was on tripod and remote fired at 1/13 sec., and at f/1.4 your DOF total is less than half of an inch. It looks to me as though it's front focusing as well, given I can see that it looks sharper where the chair back meets the seat and straight across that focal plane. I tried MA my copy all over the place at short distances like that but when it came down to shooting subjects at 15 feet or so, the focus was off literally by feet. Every adjustment you make during MA is amplified the farther your subject is so my advice would be to use it in real world situations and if need be MA for those distances. It made the world of difference for my copy and I ended up MAing it right back to 0. At f/1.4 it's plenty sharp and a very minor USM filter in CS5 sharpens it right up. Now if I could just get rid of that pesky focus issue when the subject has strong backlighting!

Shot at f/1.4, 1/40 on tripod, and 2 feet. focused on his lips. (Don't ask) Purple tone was from the 58" Samsung behind him. :D

is it on a tripod?
i looked at your exif.
even tho your flash fierd 1/13th of a second is enough for an ambient exposure aswell.
and at 2.4 feet away from you subject you have

dof equal to
Total 0.06 ft

In front of subject 0.03 ft (49%)
Behind subject 0.03 ft (51%)
that is less then an inch of DOF
there very slightest movement will through it out of focus.
i would retry it at as fast a shutter speed as possible/ in good light.

at 2.2 you got about 1.08 inchs DOF, at 1.4 you got .7 inches of DOF
