What is this voodoo trickery. I like the shot. I'm guessing you did actually toss/let go of the camera and catch it again after the shot was exposed.

(Oh, you've got a hot pixel, unless that's a piece of dust. I can see it in the hair.)

AJG1
8th of August 2011 (Mon), 01:37
Glad you like it, but there's no way on this earth I would risk throwing my camera gear in the air. Simple levitation is all that it took.....actually No....it was a 2 shot composite, 1 with the camera, 1 without. Just got rid of 'most' of the tripod in CS5.
Hadn't noticed the 'mark' on the hair. Due to the 'wide'ish' aperture it seems that it may be a hot pixel. I'll have to investigate this further. Thanks for the heads up. ;)

Sigma will calibrate it for you if its really off..and in my opinion, thats a MUCH better option than sending back and playing the lens lotto, More guaranteed to get a good result out of it, And of course B&H and Adorama have 30 day return policies

The Sigmalux is an awesome lens, Seriously, one of my favorite lenses ever and I do not see myself parting with it for a long time, its a lens i can take out, shoot with, and be very happy with the results

Thats something i've had a problem with this lens specifically on and thats White Balance, Sometimes i just cant seem to get the colors "right" from this lens...

But most of the time its fine and works great, just usually gives a warmish cast

I just got mine back from Sigma. I sent it in for the hell of it, to see if they could correct my need to +12 microadjust. I opened up the package and all that it said had been done was a "firmware update." I of course thought "well that's useless," but indeed, when I tried it out, it still needs MA but only +6 now. It's also much more consistent in general...low-light AF is still shaky, but I'm pretty sure that's true of even perfectly focusing copies.

Incidentally I'll likely be selling this at some time this month (I'm physically downsizing my kit, so it's likely to either be replaced by my tiny little Pentax 50/1.7 or a CV 40/2 pancake), so if anyone's interested let me know!

Thanks, PJ, and glad to see you around! Thought you'd outgrown us :) By they way, I notice the J is back in your preferred nickname. It was gone for a while, wasn't it?

 I'm still around mate - just aint shot much lately with the Siggy! Should be posting by end of month though. :)

And no "PJ" has always been there...but I don't mind what people call me as long as it aint rude! :D

Thanks Jay! This is the second picture I've put up this week folks have recommended I print. Sure makes me feel like I'm coming along:D
This is my wife. When I showed it to her she said what she always does "I look so ugly!" She is having a hard time coming to grips with crows feet, etc. now that she is in her 30s. I'll pass the comment along though. Thanks again.

i didn't know lenses had firmware. How would one go about updating that? Or was this on the camera. I am thinking about sending my lens in.

Pretty much any modern electronic device has firmware, particularly those that are built to connect to other electronic devices. For example, earlier copies of one of my flashes, the RD2000, which is small and very simple, required firmware updates to work on the 5D2.

Ow thanks! :D

The focus wasn't that difficult, the lightning was harder. The first shots were totally overexposed. So when I was quite sure about the lightning I focused on the focus. I think I had about 5 shots before I had one that was tack sharp.

Today I tried it again but it was very windy so I gave up.. It fun to do but sometimes you have to be very patient :)

I'm going out now so maybe later on the day a new pic :D I'll count the focus attempts. But with this ladybug there wasn't much time because he climbed up and he ran so the moment only appeared once. About the dust, I don't see any dust in my photographs so I think there's not that much dust coming in. Although I'm planning on cleaning it after my exams.

Learned lots of things: -

1) MFD is much closer - guess it works like extension tubes
2) Focussing is frickin hard...but not sure if I should "rock" into focus or adjust the focus ring...or both???
3) When you're trying a new technique, make sure you do it in good light, not when its late in the evening and its dark in your living room.
4) 30D + 580 + free lensing makes my hand wobble...a lot.
5) I'm super paranoid about dropping my lens
6) I forgot how bad ISO 800 is on the 30D
7) My Sigma is soft wide open on the 30D

It's a good first attempt! Could be sharper yes, but that's practice. And yes, overall I'm good in mf.

1. I totally agree. That's about the first reason why I do it.
2. A handy tip for getting the focus is to release the lens but not tilt it, then you focus, when it is sharp you focus a little bit further, then you tilt and with a bit +- it should be in focus.
3. I wouldn't try it in sunlight for the first times. Why? You will get overexposed images. It's much easier with less light. If you want much flares, sunlight is the answer :)
4. Yes! I tried to free lens with my 70-200.. I know why I chose my 50mm. A big lens or much weight makes it more difficult.
5. Me too :D
6. Hhaha :D
7. Mine isn't :p

About the dust, I took a closer look and yes there's dust on my sensor.. so my previous comment isn't really true. A few spots are housing on my sensor, no biggie :)

Yh, I haven't used the 30D for a long time now so it's hard MF (for me) as I've got used to the focussing screen I have installed on the 5D! But, I'll try it again anyway with the method you described! I'm hoping I can use the techniques on a few portraits on a shoot this weekend. :)

And yh, sadly the Sigma is not so brilliant on the 30D - actually with the lens mounted properly it's a tad sharper wide open...but tbh I don't care - as long as it stays sharp on the 5D I won't complain too much! :D

If I want to send this lens into sigma for an adjustment for a 60d, is it best to send it in with the 60d camera, since it does not have a micro adjustment feature?

Yes, that's the only way to ensure proper calibration to your camera body.

Hey Banana - whats your technique for freelensing?

You may want to check this out (http://gentlepurespace.com/blog/archives/freelensing-photography-technique)

NOTE: Yes, dust on the sensor is a risk when doing this.

Hey Banana - whats your technique for freelensing?

Bobster, the link that PerfectTan gave is very good.

Basically it something like this. You search a subject that you think would be nice if it's free lensed. Why would you do it? To get closer, like I do for the ladybug shots. To get a nicer bokeh because you shoot at f0. For the tilt and shift effect or for the light that you can leak in.

What do you do? Detach your lens and tilt it to the left or right. Or up or down. The further you move the more light comes in, the harder the exposure is to get right but the more light leaks you get.

In my opinion, the best way is to do it and practice it. It will be frustrating in the beginning but fun afterwards.

And in case you haven't read it, I'll quote myself (I added some things):

I'm doing it without live view and without special focusing screen, so that isn't necessary.

So I would advise you to take a fast prime. I prefer the 50mm, all my pics are taken with it but something like a 35 or 85 should to the job.

5. Me too :D
You need to pay attention to the fact that your lens is lose. And sometimes you're tilting it and when you move it just a bit to far your lens it totally detached from the body. Normally a part is still resting on the body. It isn't obligated to keep it resting on the body. But when you do it like that make sure it stays there too.

6. Hhaha :D
7. Mine isn't :p

Hopefully my english is readable, my main language is dutch :)

attended an awesome lighting and retouching workshop over the weekend, alot of it was stuff i already knew, but was amazing to go to. the retouching class was 90% my workflow with a few tweaks that made it a ton better,
things i learned: beautiful models make it so much easier to get a great photo.
and retouching: is evolving so fast, and new methods are comeing out that save time and increase quality.
this was a quavondo and pratik (solstice retouching) 2 day workshop
