makko, from the picture you posted no one viewing can tell a bit of difference on sharpness...

1/60 is way to slow for a 50mm lens to be handheld for ideal sharpness.

1.4 is not 1.8... My Sigma 50 is much sharper at 1.8 than at 1.4...

You can tell the bokeh of the Sigma is much smoother...

In most circumstances the Sigma 50 is not going to be mindblowingly better than the Canon 1.8... Especially considering your above comparison setup...
Very subjective there. although...if it was shot with a crop that would be more believable of a statement. even still...depends most on the person and the circumstances.

agreed.... totally subjective. I can bang out sharp shots at F/1.4 on a 50mm as slow as 1/50s maybe even 1/40s especially of the point if focus is a good 10 feet away... its a matter of experience with such shallow DOF and how much time you have to get the shot... shooting at or close to MFD can get a bit more tricky but still completely do-able.

I find the general rule of 1/FL to be very true in most cases... 1/50s with a 50mm should not be a problem at any aperture I would think... but I can see it perhaps being a little less accurate of a statement for APS-C shooters.

still no current status from Sigma. Man, first time it went in I had it back in under a week. This time, they have had it at least a week so far and nothing new. Must really be messed up!

Update: Enough bugging them, I guess. As I finished typing above, I was notified that the lens is on its way back. Fingers crossed.

+1, I bang out sharp stuff at 1/40 and 1/50 easily with the Sigmalux....on APS-C none the less

I got the lens around July. It was a beauty to use and created wonderful images. I just sold it on Friday to a local gentleman though to help fund either a 17-40 or 24-105. Can't decide between the two. But I will be posting photo's I took with it during the time I had it periodically on here. I know I will eventually get the 50mm 1.4 again. :)

well got mine back again today. so far, so good as far as i can tell. i do know it is not as sharp at 1.4 as it was before i send it back the second time, but at least it doesnt back focus like mad. always seems to be some sort of trade off with this lens. i will give it a chance and see what she can give me. I do feel, however, that the 50L is in my future. Just have to see how many weddings i get booked for next year. for now...it will do the trick.

1.8 action in the back yard.

^ this is definitely my favorite lens. But I know it enough that I would never use it for any shot that I couldn't 'redo' if necessary. IE I don't feel I could rely on it for a wedding. Out of a series of shots... about less than half of 10 I'd say are 'spot on' some you 'work to keep' some completely OOF... is it the Sigma, the 5DmkII... me? I don't know... I have more keepers w/ the 135... but I like it less ;) I'd loooove to have the 50L I plan on renting one over the holidays :D

*edit* weird thing is the Sigma seemed to behave better on the 5D before I got the mkII? Does that seem odd? It was sharp as a tack on the 5D, but needed micro-adjusting on the mkII, so it just seems to 'miss' now and then... but that just seems to be the case from what I read.

I don't use f1.4 much, but it does seem that full frame almost makes the problem more noticeable. I mean, the point is to be able to use f1.4, but for me at 1.6 I'm pretty happy.

1.8 I'm very happy.
2.0 I'm astounded.
And at 2.8 I was WTFBBQ.

yeah that was fun. 5D with the Tamron 17-35. just one 580 on camera and careful metering. f/11 1/80 iso 200. a bit of sky recovery and some dodging on faces (but not too much). the hardest part was choosing one with everyone looking!

hard to recommend one way or another. new would give you a fresh start on warranty, however, as others, including myself have stated, you are buying a lottery ticket.

that said, if you can find a used one that is verified to be tried and true then that could be worth it. i bought new, and glad i did. even though my second copy spend more time traveling in the last month or so than i have all year, still worth it to me.

i think im going to end up taking the chance and buying new. sigma has improved a lot lately i have been hearing and there are less chances of buying a really bad copy. i got my sigma 30 new and it did need some micro adjusting to +8 and it works great now.

i even see less moans and complaints about sigma here than i saw when i first joined this forum

Mine should be here tomorrow! I can't wait to use it...

However, IMO, you might want to look into something a little longer for BB... maybe an 85/1.8? ...or Sigma 85/1.4?

i did consider both of those but my main spot i shoot from is sitting on the court a little off center from the basket. i have a all access pass because i work for the athletics program at my school. occasionally ill shoot from the corner but i dont get many good shots because sometimes my shot gets blocked by other players.

i actually plan to put my 30 to good use from under the basket. i also didnt mention that i use a 70-200 2.8 mkII that the school lets me use until i graduate. so its basically my 70-200 except i dont take it home with me because if it got stolen i would be screwed. i go to school in a kinda sorta high crime area

lucky you! make sure to also check to make sure you can accurately focus on far away subjects as well. thats where mine failed me.

Mine just arrived today. Bought it second hand with warranty, had to resend it for recalibration. Took almost 1,5 month. But now it's spot on, but wide open I think the Canon version is still sharper.

its funny...after first calibration mine was super sharp at 1.4 but couldnt hit a target past 10 feet to save its life. second calibration, it can hit pretty much everything reliably but is nowhere near as sharp at 1.4 as it was. its acceptable, but not blistering. do i mess with a good thing at this point? probably not.

is it noticeable or is it on pixel peeping?
@psycho, maybe try sending it to the new york location if it needs another service, lots of people said that it only takes a few days to a week at that one. (i have no experience with sigma servicing. ) I know alot of people complain how long the AZ one takes

It's probably pixel peeping. Just tried it on small text on a label of a bottle. Haven't had the time yet to test it in a real environment. I just got the lens back today.
Sending to new york is not an option because I live in Europe.

mostly peeping, but side by side...its noticeable that calibration 1 was sharper wide open compared to calibration 2. that said...cal 2 provides more consistent results, so i remain happy(ish).

I apologize if some of these are repeats, but I don't look around here too much anymore. These are my favorites. The last one needed a tripod, which I don't have.

I love this photo - the language weirdness, the drastic contrast, the anticipation in how he's set up to draw a long or loud note on the violin, the intense stare directly into the lens. I could give a damn if it's posed, it's just perfect.

not necessarily about knowing how to get the best out of it, or whatever. sure if youre not used to wide apertures it will take a bit to learn, but there are legitimate complaints about this lens. sure i love the IQ from it, but it took a while to get it where it is today. now my copy is doing quite well, even in the dark.

as for your last shot...it looks like clear focus was achieved on the leading corner of the table....unless that was your intention. dont know that the lack of a tripod was the only problem here.

Heres one from my last wedding...i was impressed it was keeping up with the subjects, even using off-center focus points on the 5D

mine shows up as a 50mm. assume the sigma designation is buried somewhere in there as the lens profiler in ACR 6 recognizes it.

thank you, i know this 50 is a stellar performer especially for the price since a 50L is too much money for me and just not necessary for someone shooting at my level and what im shooting. not even sure if the 50L would do good for basketball with all that glass inside of it.

i think ill stick with my 50 1.8 for sports until it breaks. although i do want a sigma 50 one day because it puts out some great images

Racking focus seems a bit slower than the Canon USM lenses I have used, but that's a bad marker of true AF speed, as I have not had the lens rack focus while trying to focus on anything yet. My copy tends to focus quickly and accurately so far. I haven't tested it's tracking abilities yet though...

if you ever get a chance please post because i am curious as to how this lens does in servo for sports like basketball

i am used to shooting with my 50 1.8 which happens to track very nicely despite its lack of USM so i can only imagine that the EF 50 1.4 would be a little better but i dont know much about micro-USM.

Just rented this lens and the Canon 85mm 1.2L and somehow I like it better then the Canon... go figure! Notable though: the Canon is still awesome.

Why do you guys keep playing the "exchange for a good copy" game? Why not just send it to Sigma?

Because ι should pay I guess another 450 euro (cost lens) for the courier to send it to Sigma.
In Greece, do repair lens and no replacement.
Ρeplacement very rarely. Ιf someone life in U.S.A it is very easy. But in Europe and special in Greecε, it is very expensive & difficult for this.

Ahh, overlooked that you were not in the US. GL getting a good copy, once you do, you certainly won't regret it! :)
