Shot some of the most amazing video the other day for an emerging band. I don't know if I just got lucky or not, but this lens worked beautifully on its first day out.

Here's a still I took wide open.

Woohoo... I think Sigma is going to accept the Amazon invoice for me to send in my lens for calibration. I have to send my camera in, as well.

i'm just starting to follow this thread. I'm noticing that a lot of people have to send in their lens for calibration. Is this common, or is it possible to get a good lens straight out of the box.

Also, why are people saying that they got a "copy" of the lens? Is that a third party lens branded as a Sigma?

Apparently the lens has issues with both back and front focusing on some "copies". By copy, they just mean their model/version. Again, I just got one and it works amazingly. Front focuses when you're autofocusing closer than about five feet, but even with that issue it's amazing.

I ordered a 85mm Canon 85mm 1.2L and this, and I'm returning the 85mm. For the price, I just can't justify keeping the other one when this performs so well.

Sad face... Mine's about to head to Sigma as it has recently stopped going down to MFD, it seems to jam around the 2ft mark. :(

For all the great shots I'm seeing here, it sure seems like a lot of people havee problems with this lens. The canon 1.4 is sounding better to me again....

i bought my copy 2nd hand from a photographer who claimed it wasnt sharp at 1.4 - i took it for a test run and snapped it up quick smart! its just like my sigma 28 1.8 razor sharp wide open :D

Mine isn't a focus issue... It's an internal issue and its over 2 years old, had it been a Canon... The warranty would be expired and id be paying for the repair out of Pocket.

I don't have many samples, been meaning to scan my negatives, but here's one I happened to have on my computer. Shot on T-MAX 400 with an Elan II and the Sigma 50.

I actually have a ton more from my school days, but I don't have a halfway decent scanner, or I would post more.

But i gotta say so far i prefer the 50mm more than the 85mm.

Both have pros:

Sigma:
Better Build Quality - Better IQ - Longer Warranty - Includes soft case & lens hood

Canon:
Cheaper - Less likely to have AF issues

Im really interested in picking this lens up to use with my canon 5d. Banannaraws shots have completely sold me. Now I had the 30mm for my 60d and loved it, had no focusing issues with af at all. I see here that the quality control on the 50mm isnt that great. My question is,let's say I get a copy that does front focus or back focusing af. Would it kill the deal if I didnt bother with af and stuck to mf? I'm planning on possibly picking it up in a couple of days. I'm chasing the sigma more than the canon bc I love the bokeh it creates. If it's that much of a hassle I guess ill consider saving a hundred dollars by picking up the canon version. Any insights would be greatful!

Hi - I've just gone through the same thing - I was going to buy the Canon but found a 6 month old Sigma for sale locally for the same price as the Canon 1.4

I used it over the weekend and found it front focused - but I've MFAd it and it seems much better - I'm toying between 5 and 7 MFA so it's not a significant issue.

Manual focus wouldn't kill the deal IMO

If you get a Ee-S focus screen to go along with it, then no, it shouldn't be a problem... manually focusing that is.
Also, you can get the lens calibrated(free if the lens has a warranty), if it does have focus issues, or even replaced, provided you buy it new.

Yes, I'll be buying new. I'll send it in to get calibrated but I'm not sure about sending my camera along with it. If in any case (probably a good possibility) that I get one with issues, ill try sending it back and getting a replacement. I'm planning to buy mine from b&h or adorama. Still debating if I should go for the canon version but the only reason I would is for the good af out of the box although I'm more of a mf user. But with my experience with the 30mm, I love he sharpness and bokeh that comes from the lens. Thanks for the tidbit on the ee-s screen as well!

The Devil
7th of November 2011 (Mon), 16:18
If you're gonna buy new you might aswell try different samples before you find one without any issues.

P.S. the issues usually come from different AF tolerances for the lens AND camera. Only a few lenses are genuine useless ones as far as AF goes (the ones that front- and backfocus at random).

Also, you might want to stick to your 50mm F1.8 for now and instead get yourself a Sigma 24mm F1.8 or a Canon 28mm F1.8. Just saying. That's what I'd do anyway.

Quick tests: The focus is on the letter ‘O’:

Well, there's a big difference, IMO, between running straight for the chart when you get a new lens, and using one after you are confident something is amiss. The first case is like going to the doctor when you aren't sick. But if you know you are ill, it's useful to get a good diagnosis so you know what medicine you are going to need to get better...However, from the stuff you shot I thought it looked pretty good.

Looks a bit off. But I'd use better test charts/conditions than what you used to make that determination.

I disagree - it looks fine. Focus depth looks consistent between shots on the O and P.

Like others I had to use some MFA - mine is +4 and is now tack sharp.

Something more abstract for a change... also one of the first photographs I made with my new(well not technically new, but new to me) 5Dc. This lens is absolutely magnificent on FF.

After doing some minor tests on my new sigmalux, i'm assuming mine is okay. I think it depends on how you shoot out in real life. Granted, I know there's people out there who ended up with a bad copy but from this shot, it seems pretty okay. AF point was aimed at the "8". If i could get a second opinion, that'll be great!

I don't use mine too much as the AF is a little all over the place sometimes (I know we are working with very shallow DOF) so it is going into Sigma tomorrow with my 5D classic as it is too far front focused to use with that body normally. On my 5D mkII it is OK with some compensation dialed in. Looking forward to seeing how it goes when the lens is back next week, I really want to love the lens but just don't have enough confidence in it to get it out of the bag much for paid work yet. I just grab the Canon 85 or 70-200mm f2.8 and be done with it as they nail the focus every single shot.

Thanks! I used a user defined preset I found online for Lightroom. Adjusted the reds to make them pop out more. Then i tossed it into photoshop CS5 and did some curve adjustments.

Nice composition. :-)

I would have just eased off the shadow at the front though, with a white graduated layer in PS.

Good tip! Thanks, I wouldn't have thought about that. Still trying to figure out how I can get those shadows softer in camera. Maybe flagging the background lights will help??
