Thanks! I used a user defined preset I found online for Lightroom. Adjusted the reds to make them pop out more. Then i tossed it into photoshop CS5 and did some curve adjustments.
Thanks for the reply!! :D

Good tip! Thanks, I wouldn't have thought about that. Still trying to figure out how I can get those shadows softer in camera. Maybe flagging the background lights will help??
With the highly reflective surface it is hard to diminish it.
To be honest it is so quick to fix in Photoshop, that you might as well do it there.
Simple gradient layer from white to opaque and you are done. :-)

I absolutely love the 50mm focal length on FF... I used this thing on a crop body for over a year... I quite liked it, but on FF the FoV is just perfect!

I feel exactly the same way. It’s my favorite, too.
Nice work, by the way. :)

This lens can really save me sometimes especcialy for sports, but sometimes, you just have to get over the fact that there is no way you can get a decent picture.

Reading about all these QC issues with the 50mm makes me paranoid especially when i was using it yesterday and noticed one of my shots were off on AF. I still want to assume that mine is a sharp/good copy because i was shooting low light and I remembered i place the focusing point on the area on where I shouldn't expect it to focus in on.
Did a little test with my dinner plate earlier, AF point is on the broccoli.

Thanks guys!
Bryant: I enhanced the eyes in LR3 and did the standard sharpening in there as well too I believe. I find it important to focus on the eyes when capturing your shot and then add a little more sharpening in PP.
I also do selective sharpening in CS5 too if I just want to sharpen a specific part in the image rather than sharpening the whole thing. I believe that's what I did on the first image and LR3 on the 2nd. I'm in class right now and can't give you the exact method of how I did those right off hand.

Ah! that's what i need to work on for my portraits, selective sharpening. I noticed in your EXIF on flickr said you shot spot metering. Any reason why? I'm not so keen on those different metering types and i'm just curious.

I did that because I was metering on her face mainly to make sure it is not under exposed. I usually switch from spot to evaluative metering depending on the situation. Try both metering methods, if you're shooting portraits and see which one works out better for you.
I added a few more pictures, check them out :)

While out on my shoot last night, I noticed a little issue. Idk if it's enough to send in to Sigma to get calibrated but i was mucking around and focused on a very distant building above me. The AF kept going crazy, like a constant in and out. I did the same thing to the following building next to it, and it didn't have the same problem. Any solutions?

maybe sounds like you had it on AI Servo? I could be wrong. i say make sure all is set up correctly and test out again, if still messed up, send to Sigma.

Not sure if it's my monitor at work, but the second looks like it has a halo around some parts - in particicular her hands and belly area. Did you apply the vignette via the lens correction tool in PS or LR?...or did you "paint" it on? Also, I think it needs a touch of straightening to level up the red border at the top.
Either way, I think the second does look better. Lovely lighting and stunning model too! :)

Thanks! HM. On the frantic AF issue i posted earlier, i'll check it out later. I don't recall it being on AF servo but it was weird. I remember my 30mm sigma did the same thing but I didn't really thought it was an issue.
Quick question, which one would you guys choose? I can't figure out if i should stick on the crop and vignette version or the regular one.
no crop.

I really like the first, the weaker blacks give it a high end sheen imo for some reason, can't tell why though, sorry for stalking you by the way haha!!! EDIT: Maybe the only place the blacks are stronger in the second is the vignette, in which case i like the clean reds in the first! =)

Thanks guys! I opted to go with the top but cropped it down to the same as the second and did away with the vignette. I noticed that the photo did need some straightening. Idk if it's me but for composition mode, it's difficult for me to get leveled for some reason. I guess i need to work on that a bit more and watch the backdrops more. There is a bit of "halo/glow" i think that had to do with my not so great job at using the adjustment brush in lightroom.

NVM, I love that renaissance picture! That guy really looks like he stepped out of a time warp. I tried playing with it and giving it some vignette and cloning out the street light to obscure and soften some of the modern background, but it didn't look good when reuploaded. Really neat picture, though.

Well, it would if it had warmer colours. That's the thing about food photography, though obviously dependant on what food exactly ones taking pictures of, warm-ish colours increase the perceived appealingness of said food. I've no doubt that in actual taste, the pie was excellent.

I agree with you on the pie! On the picture too, really. I like the comp, the model, and the colors, but some part of me associates green tones in a person's face with nausea or something. Probably just me, though:) Now I'm sorry I brought it up:oops:

Well, it would if it had warmer colours. That's the thing about food photography, though obviously dependant on what food exactly ones taking pictures of, warm-ish colours increase the perceived appealingness of said food. I've no doubt that in actual taste, the pie was excellent.

Based on the very low res images you posted it seems to be focusing just fine.
If you're not satisfied with those results straight out of the camera without postprocessing(which brings me to the question, why WOULDN'T one do lots and lots of postprocessing?), then I'm afraid you won't ever be truly satisfied with any lens.
I mean those are JPEG fails SOOC for crying out loud. No lens is as impressive as people claim them to be, esp. without any PP done at all (either in the darkroom during the film era or any RAW converter that has lots and lots of those slidy-fiddly things).
TL;DR - Your lens seems to be working fine, the problem is in your lack of PP. Keep in mind that JPEG files straight out of the camera will almost invariably suck, or RAW files with zero PP done to them, so judging a piece of equipment based on those parameters (while not purposefully conducting a bona fide scientific measurement in order to give information to others about various photographic tools to people who might need parts of said information) is inherently flawed.
Also, people who got those awesome looking effects in the "olden" days, used artificial lighting, reflectors, filters, many hours in the darkroom, etc (or atleast some of the aformentioned practices) to achieve the contrast, overall sharpness, etc they wanted, while today we have photoshop to cover part of the aformentioned techniques. And no, I don't mean they'd replace artificial lighting and reflectors. That'd be a dumb statement.
Sorry 'bout the relatively long(and possibly at times incoherent - didn't actually read through it after writing it all down) rant, but my point stands.

shots are good, was it shot in raw or jpeg?
keep in mind at f 1.4 that close to a subject if either of you move less than 1/2 an inch after focusing the place you thought you focused on will be OOF.
what do you see that is wrong with it?
it is a tricky lens, b/c the shallow DOF , but when you get the hang of it its a beast :P
also there is more to the lens then sharpness, it should be sharper then the 50 1.4 canon, and the bokeh will be better then the canon (canons is football shaped, sigma more round)
and there is color rendering differences also :P

Looks good to me! On lenses like this you pretty much gotta use one focus point with a quick shutter speed to get a crisp and sharp image. I always sharpen more in post anyways :)

They look reasonably fine to me, considering they are SOOC. They don't look OOF at all. Applying sharpening and some more contrast to your shots will make them pop more.
My copy is acceptably sharp - it won't match my 100mm macro, but then I didn't expect it too. I'm a terrible pixel peeper and trying my utmost to stop the habit. I love my sharpness though, but as already mentioned by bedejo - there's more to a lens than sharpness.
It's a great lens and you seem to have a good copy so just enjoy it! :)
EDIT: one thing to test out though is focussing accuracy at different distances - some copies tend to have a habit of misfocusing at longer distances.
