LOL no. A friend had a birthday and they were throwing it at one of the clubs in our town. She asked me to shoot the night for her so I did. I noticed that this lens AF hunts slightly in low light so majority of the time i had to do it all MF.

I think most lenses will hunt in low light.

True, to a point

My Sigmalux is definitely my least accurate focusing lens of the bunch I own, It took me a bit to finally realize its not defective or anything, the lens is just a real tough nut to get accurate focus with 100% of the time, I'd say my focus hit rate is more like 75-85% with AF...MF is higher but i HAVE to use live view for it (7D's viewfinder sucks for MF)

focus issues with the Sigmalux i think boil down to this:

60% of people not understanding its the nature of any wide aperture lens to be thrown out of focus by the slightest, most miniscule movement of subject or shooter which automatically is reducing your hit rate substantially

15% being the fact the lens isnt as accurate to focus as a Canon (Debateable of course, as the 50L isnt a stunningly accurate focuser either...)

and 25% having a legitimately defective lens

If you can find any way to stretch it, go for the BXRi's, you won't regret it, superb strobes.

But I still prefer my flashes for out and about.

Ahh man I think they may be out of my price range...saying that though if I get only 2 strobes and still use my 580/nikons I may be able to afford them...I was quite surprised at how my speedlight in a double diffused softbox fared really well with the d-lite in the crappy portalite softbox!...although the speedlight is now visually awful behind the softbox compared to the neat and tidy d-lite!

I do want to compare the speedlight with the d-lite in a decent Eli softbox though! :)

I hate to say this, but you should aim for 4 bxri's if possible.

I have 2 x the 250's and 2 x the 500's.

It is one of them situations where you will end up at that place anyway I suspect.

I know, I know, I am giving you a headache...

^ So true. Whenever someone suspects a focus error, everyone always suggests putting the camera on a tripod, mirror lockup, good light, fast shutter speed, that's fine for testing the lens, but what about the user? Nobody ever suggests getting a real idea of how much technique matters when shooting fast primes.

Hang a focus target on a wall. Manual focus on the target using focus confirmation, rock back and forth and see how easy it is to loose focus confirmation. Only then will you understand the task at hand.

After much deliberation, i decided to get the sigmalux.

It turned up today, bloody thing front focuses about 10-15mm at minimum focal distance and back focuses at distance! My 5d is dead at the moment too so can't even send it off to sigma till that's fixed, I've sent lenses to them in the past on their own and they came back the same, they're spot on when you send the body with it though.

It never rains...

I got mine back today (it needed caliberation as it was badly focussing straight out of the box) and it came back with no AF at all! There is no AF anymore - the lens is just dead and crazy soft even when I use MF. This is after it was at Sigma for 10 weeks for repair/caliberation. Sorry but this is the last Sigma for me :P

Too bad since there is some great photos in here from the ones that got a good copy.

10 weeks!? That is horrible. Get their phone number and rip them a new one!
Here in Taiwan it's awesome. I just give the camera and lens to my camera shop and they hand it off to the Sigma guy (who drops by twice a week) and then I can pick it up again on his next visit (3-4 days later).

hahha me too tempted.

I'd be without a camera for a little most likely as id probubly be shipping the 5D2 and Sigmalux off to get calibrated (Unless it does better on the 5D2 compared to my 7D) because the Sigmalux would likely become my primary lens on my 5D2...

Not that my Sigmalux is horrible, i just wonder if they cant actually get my focus "hit" rate above the 75% or so im getting right now ...the little pang of "Oh geez did that shot focus right?" is not fun sometimes...

Just got my brand new sigma 50mm from Abe's of Maine. It has front focusing problem when using View Finder. It focus perfectly using Live View.

Some shots taken over the spring and summer... and early fall, with my old 400D.
I didn't initially do anything with 'em but last night I decided to go over my old works to see if there was something I had missed... well there was, got 25 photos total, and I will post some of 'em here. Not all of 'em are worth showing of course...

Anyone own both the Sigma 85 & 50? My 85 just showed up last week and it is so sharp wide open that I might need stitches. I understand that the 85 is typically sharper at 1.4, but by how much? The only side by side comparison I can find is http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=473&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=756&CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

Even as is, I feel the deciding factor on which I grab for a given situation will be focal length.

I have both. I am completely satisfied with my 50's sharpness, but agree it's not like the 85's. If you want the 50 to be super sharp, you're better off at 2.2. Of course, if you think the 85 is super sharp at 1.4, you should be much happier with it stopped down to 5.6 (where the edges catch up to the center...).

I believe syjap shoots w/ a 5D2. Though I have a feeling you can give him a Lego camera and he'd do just the same. He puts a lot of talent/effort into post-processing.

Got mine yesterday, it is front focusing badly. Even maximum microadjustment on my 7D is not enough to compensate. I will be sending it to Sigma on Monday.

But it is nice and sharp manually focused ;)

I am thinking of pulling the trigger on this lens. I have the Sigma 30 as my walk around lens on my 7D and was hoping to use the 50 for portraits. Do you guys think it will compliment the Sigma 30 or are the focal lengths to close together?

Also, where would be a good place to buy the Sigma 50 online for a higher chance on getting the new finish? Amazon and Adorama seem to be out of stock. B&H, Beach Camera, 17th Street and 47th Street have them in stock.

I think it would compliment nicely. 85mm is also a really good portrait lens on crop but too long for indoors. 50 on crop (effectively 85) is a nice versatile portrait length for indoor and outdoor portraits.

Edit to add - just get it from BH.

I love 50mm on a 1.6x sensor...perfect focal length for portraits (~85mm).

I just got mine from 47th Street...purchased through Amazon, and it is the new finish.

Indeed, it's quite useful for portraits.

In fact I once shot an entire wedding with just the Sigma 50mm on my old crop body(which I sold a while ago).
It'll complement your Sigma 30mm nicely on crop.

where did you order yours from? I ordered from BH, it had problems, and they did a return the day my return period expired.
I was on vacation and didn't get home until the end of return peroid.
and they were quick to send me a new on, and the new one had no problems at all.
may be faster to do a exchange then get it serviced.

Yes I did! :) And, they are great for my first proper head. Haven't had a chance to test them out properly, but will give them their first proper run on a shoot tomorrow.

My only negative so far is their slow flash duration. I've been spoilt by speedlights, so 1/800 for the d-lites isn't gonna be fast enough for any action freezing shots! ...but then I don't tend to shoot moving subjects and in any case, I plan to upgrade later down the line. So, for the moment I'm not overly fussed...and of course I still can use my speedlights if I wanna freeze motion in the meantime. :)

Mine came from 47th Street Photo, ordered through Amazon. The way I look at it, there is a pretty good chance if I return it to Amazon I will get another lens with focusing issues - seems that people are receiving a copy with issues more often than not. If I just send it to Sigma I'm pretty confident it will be great when it comes back (fingers crossed).

Im a little unhappy with the midframe performance on 5Dmk2. Even at f2.8 group shots turn out less than sharp and I'm pretty sure focus solid.

My guess is you have focus issues...look at some of the examples in this thread.

Try doing some tests on a tripod, manually focusing in liveview vs autofocus in the viewfinder.

Great shot folks!!
Just picked up a 3 month old used one and I can't wait to try this thing out.
Seller noted it slightly miss focuses at 1.4-1.6 on his 5D Mark II, but worked great on his 5D MK I.
I have a 5D MK 1 so I hope it's tack sharp on mine!! :)

you should never have a focus issue with a 5d2, you're able to bump the focus point forwards or backwards depending how your lens is acting

Yeah he said he was able to micro adjust on his 5d II, but on his 5D I it worked fine at those apertures
