I have used the following Canon mount 50mm lense:
Canon 50 1.8: Dirt cheap you get what you pay for.
Canon 50 1.4: Terrible bokeh (this is subjective but for me a deal breaker) This lens is old and in need of an upgrade!
Canon 50 1.2L: Excellent build, IQ and bokeh!
Sigma 50 1.4: Excellent IQ and bokeh! This lens approaches the IQ production of the Canon 50 1.2L at almost 1/3 of the price! It is hands down the best all around 50mm lens you can get on a Canon mount today when you look at IQ vs Price point. If you don't need the build of the 50L then get the sigma.

Hey yall, I'm trying to decide between the Canon and Sigma. I've been looking at the charts over on dpReview:
Sigma:
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma_50_1p4_c16/page4.asp
Canon:
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_50_1p4_c16/page4.asp
And from what I'm seeing the Sigma has much better center sharpness, but the Canon isn't behind by much but it's corners are consistently sharper than the Sigmas. I'll be shooting this lense wide open most of the time, so it won't matter much, but have you ever noticed the outer parts of photos being too soft for your tastes? And has anyone owned both and tell me why they went with Sigma? Thanks!
I've had canon 1.4, canon 1.8, and now siggy 1.4 (all 50's). The siggy is by far the standout in terms of IQ, sharpness, and build. Many prefer it's bokeh. I guess I do as well.

I've used the Canon 50 1.8, the Canon 50 1.4, the Sigma 50 1.4, and the Canon 50 1.2.
50 1.8: Good for the price, but you get what you pay for
50 1.4 (Canon): Bokeh not my taste, and many horror stories of the AF motor failing
50 1.4 (Sigma): Great build, great image quality, but it's hard to get a good copy
50 1.2: Great build, f/1.2 is fun to play with, sharp lens, but stories about focus shift and a bit pricey for my taste... hard to justify the ~$800 - 900 premium over the Sigma 50 1.4

With the new batch (new finish), I would say the numbers are similar to that of any high quality lenses. Of course, no one will be able to pull out actual data regarding this.

UPDATE on repair if anyone is interested. I just got off the phone with Sigma NY and they stated they updated firmware and made other adjustments to match my camera body. Apparently some 5D mark II's and Sigma 50's firmware doesn't match up or something and that throws off the calibration/focus etc.
After they do this they take a number of pictures with lens/body to make sure everything is working correctly. They seem pretty knowledgable about the issues we are having, so I hope everything is working great when it comes in. Sigma received lens/body yesterday morning at 9:41am and repair was done about the same time today. It will ship out this evening 3 day UPS. That's a pretty quick turnaround time IMO.

Best info regarding sending in body and lens. Most people should consider this when sending it in. Mine is on delivery to me today so i'll do some tests when i get home to check it out. I'm more excited just to get the lens back bc i hate my 50 1.8.

Can someone help explain the best ways of going about buying this lens? I need a prime, and my understanding is that the Sigma 50 1.4 is much better than the Canon 50 1.4, right? So if I were to buy a Sigma, should I first immediately run some tests to test the focusing? And then if it needs adjusting.. whats Sigma's policy on getting copies calibrated? Is that free? Free for only a period of time? (30, 60 days) and what about cost of shipping?
I dont want to buy a lens knowing I run the chance of a bad copy, I hate that. But is it worth it in the end an how much time/money does it stack to the initial retail cost?
Thanks

It has a 3 year warranty if you're concerned. All you pay is shipping and it takes about a week or so to get it back.

Thanks for the quick and informative response. One other question.. how does this lens stack up for shooting video? When I get a prime I'd like to shoot more video, currently using my 24-70 2.8L works but its so heavy that its challenging. And my 24-70 doesn't have IS.. if that helps for video?
Is IS or Sigmas equivalent recommended for video?

It works fine. I use this 50mm on a 5DII and video wise it stacks up fine. I'm thinking about buying a 24-70 2.8L so how is that for video? Trying to lighten my load of lenses when I don't feel like carrying all of my primes..
I shot this video on a Canon 60D mostly with a Sigma 30mm f1.4 and the quality is very similar.

i sent my sigma in to get it recalibrated but only sent the lens in. After doing some further tests, it's sharper now.

i have used the 50 1.4 for video and i got same great results, you can also try the sigma 20mm 1.8 its another good lens for video on the FF

IS for video is indeed recommended, if you shoot handheld. On a tripod it does sod all.
And no, there aren't any non-tele primes with IS.
Your best bet is just getting a zoom with IS, i.e the Sigma 17-50 OS or the Canon 17-55mm IS, or if you want weather sealing then the 24-105 F4L.
On a tripod it'll do just fine.

On a 7D I'd actually recommend the Sigma 30mm F1.4 rather than the 50mm, 'cause the latter has the FoV of a ~80mm lens on a crop sensor body.

Mathematically that makes sense to me, considering the crop multiplier. How is the 30m 1.4? I had only been looking at 50s honestly.. so perhaps its time I start looking at 30mm due to the sensor difference. To be honest, I never really took that into consideration.

The 30 1.4 is GREAT! It was my fav lens before I went FF. If you are shooting crop, you definitely want the 30 over the - its a much mor useable length.

Thanks for your input. I'm currently using my 24-70L for my carry lens so that focal length allows me room to play, and I think quite honestly I don't notice the crop FoV much because I can adjust on the fly you know? I don't own a prime yet and have been looking for months.
Because of my out of sight out of mind mentality with my zoom, I completely forgot about that multiplier when considering a prime. I initially started looking at 50mm, and it was my impression that for the money the Sigma was the best choice. Now (thanks to you all), I am reminded that 50mm probably isn't the best prime for a crop sensor like the 7D.
Will the 30mm even work on a FF camera? I'm not sure I'll ever upgrade from my 7D, if so.. years and year and years from now so its not a deal breaker if it doesn't. I know the mount is the same, but I read a review of the 30mm just now that mentioned FF cameras not really working with the 30mm. Just want to make sure was all.
Anyone here have any links that could help sell me on the 30mm from Sigma? Also any other recommendations for lenses in that range from other brands? My 24-70L wasn't cheap and I see the 35L is right up there.. about twice as much as I'd want to spend on my first prime to be honest.
Thanks!

The 30mm will attach to a FF camera, but it will vignetter horribly. You'll see in my signature that I now have a 35 f2 from Canon; the Sigma really isn't an option on FF. If you're going to stay crop for a while, definitely get the Sigma 30.

The Sigma 30mm F1.4 is a lens designed for crop sensor DSLRs, meaning it has a smaller image circle.

So I know the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 is typically used wide open (in fact, I use mine a lot for concerts, low light, etc...) but I recently had my 40d take a tumble with my 10-24 on it while in Red River Gorge in eastern Kentucky, and all I had otherwise was my 5dMkII with my Sigma 50mm, so I pulled it out and used it the rest of the day for, what else? Waterfall shots! Never thought I'd pull the 50mm out for landscape photos!

Just got my 5D mark II and Sigmalux back from NY and took a couple of test shots and it seems a whole lot sharper at 1.4 then it was previously. I'm no pro by any means, so I will post some shots as soon as I get to use it more. I also got to take some shots with the 135L for the first time and its freakin crazy sharp!! :)
Congrats! Glad it works out well for you. I've thought about getting rid of mine but I think i'll keep it. I thought of moving to the canon version due to weight but figured i like the bokeh on this lens a bit too much. Also after doing intitial testing, mine is best sharpest at -5 MA. Seems good enough for me since i didn't send my body in.

I second this comment. Very nice image. Also one that hits home a bit. I spent part of my high school years and college in Louisville/Lexington. Then moved out west and never went back. My family is still there. Many of my buddies and my 2 brothers would go to the Red River Gorge and always told me how cool it was. Part of KY I needed to see. I have never been. UPDATE if anyone cares :)
Happy for you.

Here are a couple shots that i took in low light but at ISO 1600 on my 5DII. Got this calibrated from sigma and only sent my lens in. All shot wide open at f1.4. My thoughts? SHARPER than before! If i stop it down a bit more it's really sharper compared to how i had it out of the box. Definitely my keeper lens :).

Fantastic lens, but out of the box it has HORRIBLE front focus. Like several feet in front of the subject. I guess I have to box it back up and send it to Sigma with my camera body... hope no one calls for a job in the meantime :/

I haven't looked through all 495 pages of this thread so please forgive me if this has already been answered or there is photo evidence to the contrary! ;)
I'm trying to decide between this lens and the Canon version. Do you think that lens a no-go for the T2i? I don't have the ability to MA and I'm not sure if Sigma would calibrate an "entry level" body like mine. I would more than likely purchase new in hopes of me getting a good copy.
I really like this lens but the focusing issues are scaring me away.

I will check the 30mm out. Though I wanted to get this lens so that I could transition to FF without selling all my gear (sloooow transition though haha). Based off this, still a good idea to get the 30mm?

You can pick up the 30mm for the time being and then when you move to FF, just sell it to fund the sigma 50mm. That's what i did when i moved from a 60D to a 5Dc. The quality in images is very similar.

Grab the sigma 50mm and you will be happy either way.
84mm (50 on crop) is still a great range. In addition, it seems like focusing issues are rarer for the recent models with new finish.

Sending the body in would depend on what body you have. They will calibrate the lens close and if you have a body with micro-adjust, you can fine-tune it, so there should be no need to send the body. If, however, your body does not have MA, I would opt to send in the body, to be sure that it is spot on to your body. There are manufacturing tolerances in bodies as well and with the very fine DOF of a 1.4 aperture, I would want it calibrated to said body. I did this, as I have a 30D which I could not MA, whereas my 5D2 was able to MA. They calibrated it to my 30D and I MA'd the 5D2.

yes I was going to send it in with my T2i which does not have MA. I will be using this with a 1Diii and a Canon EOS A2 as well, so I figure I'd calibrate it to the weakest link.

A better way to go is to sell the 50 and get the 30. The 30 and the 50 are only going to have a 15 mm FOV difference. The 30/85 prime split is great on your camera. The above statement is misleading. FF equivalent...the siggy 30 is 48 mm and the siggy 50 is 80 mm. It's just that the siggy 30 isn't designed to work on a FF camera. That doesn't chance the FOV.

Just bought the 50mm so I'm going to keep it for a while. :)But I do want to go FF soon so the lenses can make the transition.
I didn't mind the 50mm 1.8 on my T2i. Very useable for indoor stuff and sharp. I just want something that will bridge the gap between my 8mm and the 50mm so maybe the 30mm is not the answer.
Anyways, enough talk...more pics!!! :)

Your'e right, the 30 is 48mm, even on a crop. I thought the sizing was the same as ef-s ???
Is this the same for the 17-50mm dc?

EF-S lenses as well as the Tamron 17-50 still need to have the crop factor applied to the stated focal length.
I had the 30 and 50 on my old 7D and found them a great pairing, the 85 I found a bit long. Now I'm on FF I use the 50 and 85 a lot again. I do keep thinking of the 135L but due to the lack of use the 85 had on the crop cam I'm not sure how much I'd use it...

Got this lens in December for a T3i. The first one had a major front focus issue. Second one was equally as bad. It was basically unusable unless you manually focused it.
I sent it to Sigma Canada along with my camera body. Took exactly a month to get it back from the moment I shipped it out with UPS ground.
And the results are not exactly perfect (focus on the middle logo @ F1.4):
http://i.imgur.com/ylSuj.jpg
It's much better than before but there is still a focus issue. I tested a Canon 50 F1.4 and it is definitely more accurate. The build quality of the Canon is pretty bad, purple colour fringing is an issue and the bokeh isn't as magical...
I would not recommend getting this lens on a body that can't be micro adjusted. You will be stuck manually adjusting it each time you're taking a close up below F2.8. I will keep it because I love the results when it does work. But if quick accurate results is what you want, then go with the Canon.

I usually just do basic adjustments in Lightroom and used VSCO films alongside it. I tossed in I believe "Kodak Portra 800" and then took it into CS5 to do some color curves.

You should enjoy it alot more when you get it back :).
BTW, is the focusing ring more of a ring type? Reason why i ask is because sometimes if i feel like AF in low light and think that it missed it mark, i'd focus again but but manually turning the ring. This doesn't damage the lens or AF motor right? I know you can't do this with the nifty fifty..
