Couple from my second cake smash for a friend baby boy.

First time using the 5dmkII in a studio setting, coupled with the Sigma 50mm f/1.4

Pretty blown away by some of the sharpness.

You should enjoy it alot more when you get it back :).

BTW, is the focusing ring more of a ring type? Reason why i ask is because sometimes if i feel like AF in low light and think that it missed it mark, i'd focus again but but manually turning the ring. This doesn't damage the lens or AF motor right? I know you can't do this with the nifty fifty..

yes it's perfectly fine, the HSM in the 50 is ring-type.. I was under the impression that the Canon 50mm 1.4 allowed you to do this, but it's not a ring type motor. Maybe that's why mine tanked.

My 50mm 1.4 came in today. Looks like I have the dreaded front focus issue and need calibration. What do you all think?

Shot on tripod about 2ft away with 2 sec timer. Focused on center silver battery. No PP minus brightness and resize:

What kind of light are you shooting under? You may want to check between incandescent vs. fluorescent. On my camera, it has a tendency to front focus a little bit under incandescent and back focus a little under fluorescent.

For the batteries I was shooting under incandescent lights. I assume this is aiding the front focus?

The shot of my son was outside after the sun had just gone down. I guess I'll shoot more tomorrow when it's brighter and check again.

I really don't want to send this to Sigma with my body. I just want to shoot!;)

Yeah, you should check various lighting situations and see if that affects your plane of focus. It's a rather common phenomenon, at least with Canon. It's not typically an issue until you start shooting 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 primes because of the thin DoF.

Take a few shots and see if they're not coming out?

If you want to be a bit more anal about it get yourself a focus chart and set it all up properly

Hey man! Fellow WFC member here. ;)

I got mine for Adorama for that same reason and I still have front focus issues. Instead of cluttering this thread up with my test shots, I created a new thread that shows how I'm testing.

UGH! Need some advice ASAP if anyone can help. My biggest fear was realized today. Got my 5D body in the mail today. Popped the Sigma 50 1.4 on. Took some test shots. This is a 100% crop at f1.4. Do I need to send the body AND lens into Canon for calibration, or do you think it's an issue with the lens specifically? I can post more samples if necessary. The focus was directly on the "burn" part of heartburn.

I would suggest sending it in with body if you can live without your camera for a week and a half. Since the 5D has no microadjust (unless you're referring to the mkii) you'll have a much better chance of getting it perfectly calibrated sending it in with body. If you have the mkii, lens by itself should be fine.

16th of February 2012 (Thu), 14:14
Can you micro adjust on the 5DC? If so try that first.

I have heard mixed answers on whether to send in the body. Some Sigma reps say yes others say it's not necessary. Sigma should have a 5DC they can test on if you just send in the lens.

IMO, it's hard to tell from that picture. Light on the subject looks very poor, and looks like ISO is up (i.e. could be a problem of iso and hand shake). Can't see your EXIF data, so can't say. I recommend a shot in good light (shoot the same side of the object that the light is hitting, in a well lit room), with shutter speed and ISO both at 100. Shoot at your subject head on (you are hitting the surface of the bottle a bit from above and the side), and I think you will better be able to judge.

Yes, take a few more test pics in good light. It does look like a focus problem to me, though. After a little more testing, you should send the body and lens into Sigma for calibration. My Siggy 50 was calibrated by Sigma to a 5D. It is ridonkulously sharp and accurate on my 5D classic.

Looks like you did your research: heartburn pills in your reach just in case you need it.

Have it sent to Sigma for calibration. Ideally with the camera body as each camera is different even within the same model.

This happened with my Sigma 30mm, took 2 1/2 weeks from DFW, but obviously worth it. It gave me an excuse to play with all my film cameras for a few weeks too!

Did some further testing, and it turns out it was a front-focusing issue. I've already processed the return through Amazon. I'm disappointed. It was this thread alone that sold me on the lens. Bummed out I got one of the bad copies. Rather than deal with the hassle of not having a camera for 2-3 weeks, I'm just getting my money back and looking elsewhere. I may grab this lens down the road again, but not until I have a camera body with AF micro-adjust. The manual focus is TACK SHARP! I've included a manual focus attachment just for kicks. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mosesport/6889685231/in/photostream

I originally chose the Canon over the Sigma because of its autofocus calibration issues... but then my Canon's micro motor took a dump right in my face during a shoot. So now I have the Sigma, and it's currently in NY with my camera.

If only I shot Nikon, I wouldn't have had to deal with this garbage! haha

I think I'm headed toward the Canon 50 1.4 as well. I've heard a lot of issues with the AF going out after only 6-12 months, but for some reason, it seems like $379 is easier to replace than $499. Just my $0.02.

Lol and all over AF issues. The lens works completely fine if you manually focus as well. All it takes is buying this lens, seeing if it works right, then ship it out to sigma. Playing the lotto will possibly drive you crazy and you're more than likely to get the same issues.
I didn't even send my body + lens in and it works fantastically.

I don't understand why someone would buy a Canon 50 1.4 repeatedly once the AF motor goes out. Why not just use that money towards a 50 1.2?

This one is neat because of the text. It looks like it is actually a clip from a move. Creative. Nice one. I have seen a few more shots with the cool black bars on them lately. Mine up top was the first one I had done like that. It is kinda neat if you have the right shot. Aspect ratio of 16x 9 helps.

You can just make a custom crop for it in LR.

^^ What Maxwell said. It's tally easy. That's what I do.

ok guys so I'm able to make the custom crop but how do I get the black bars on the top and bottom?

Another member pointed me in the direction of this software. It's quick and easy to download. Seems to have a few nice options including the black bars. Workflow = process and crop to liking (16 x 9) in LR, export, open in Infraview, go under "image" and select "change canvas size", adjust the top and bottom bars to your liking. Make sure to change the color to black, export back out.

Awww...Sorry Bra! Not sure which direction to point you. You can put the bars on it in the print module and save by hitting the "print to file" option, but I never figured out how to do this correctly. Seemed like a pain.

Here is a thread I started a while back trying to ask this question. Check it out. Maybe you can get it to work.

If I send it in to Sigma, do you know if I still remain under warranty? I bought it new and im wondering if it's like one of those "one time fix" warranties that are up after you have it serviced.

^^I think it looks good, idsurfer. Some blown out highlights but, it works well with the hair and windows. Just tell people it was intentional. :)

I received my brand new example of this lens today. Unfortunately, it needed greater than -20 mfa to accurately focus. Also, the AF would intermittently stop functioning altogether. I processed an exchange and will try another one. It is a gorgeous lens, I must say.

This is the second Sigma 50mm f/1.4 I've owned, and I've also had the 30mm prior to this. They all have had lackluster AF in lower-light conditions, although all my copies were nice and sharp.

i upgraded from 5d classic to 5d mk II and my sigma 50 seems to be ... not that nice.
i mean with my 5d ... 1.4 was sharp ... 1.6 and 2.0 were awesome.
now with mk II i gotta say 1.8 is ok and 2.0 is just sharp :(
i didn't do any microadjust yet.

I know for this one I messed with the temp and had it at around 5600k,
brought the tint down to -5, brought the contrast a bit up to get that dark feel to it, messed with the dark tones and shadows until I got what I felt would work. This one wasn't really much work, but let me know if that works.

Same, The pics of Skye i did on the couch were merely messing around trying to figure out the AF

My copy is golden inside in poor light, unless theres backlight like in those pictures...then it tends to front focus for some reason

If i go outside however..the AF is...Not so pleasant

Not a distance issue, close far, doesnt matter, Nor is it a consisten thing, just seems to hate the bright light

Nice shots guys

I really need to get mine calibrated..I think I kinda have the issue figured out (I keep experimenting, Trying to really discover what causes it to so massively misfocus, Especially when dealing with light colored subjects or subjects in bright light... Actually the dimmer the light the BETTER it focuses...)

What I can tell you is that its inconsistent, either front OR back focus...it doesnt do it all the time, and everytime i try to use a focus chart everythings a-ok, Yet its a very real problem for me...

Is telling Sigma "Yeah look, it just is inconsistent" really helpful enough?

I'm going to post some examples and etc in a bit... One image really made me raise an eye brow because i believe i have front focus AND backfocus in the same image

Are you certain your own technique is up to snuff? I mean, are you by any chance trying to focus on really bright areas with virtually no texture?

As for someone saying this lens isn't as sharp on the 5D II as it was on the 5D... well duh. The 5DII has a lot more pixels packed into the same area, so 100% crops will look softer when shooting this lens wide open. That's just simple physics.
You want absolute sharpness? Set it to F4-5.6 or so, it'll literally outresolve your 5DII's sensor... I just hardly see a point to it.
Also, stop worrying about sharpness - believe it or not, it makes very little difference in terms of the final look of the image. Pixel peeping is pointless, especially on a really low DPI screen (i.e your or my monitor), for obvious reasons.
Here endeth yet another rant. Yay for me.

Uh.. I have a 7D, and I've had the lens for a loooong time now, Only lens i have these kind of issues with (I made a link up there showing off some examples from today FWIW) and i've had plenty of wide aperture lenses, some are my fault, But some, theres absolutely no reason why i just took a series of 20 shots and they're ALL not focused correctly, despite refocusing several times to hopefully make sure i got a series in focus... Bunch of different lighting conditions and subjects on top of it

I dont really "pixel peep" but sometimes yes, it is evident in the final product

I wasn't really talking to you when adressing said sharpness thing (it was someone else who complained about the actual sharpness in the in-focus area of this lens). It was directed at someone else, but I'm not entirely sure who, 'cause I was too lazy to actually look up the relevant post and quote it.
Of course an out of focus subject is noticeable, but that has sod all to do with actual lens sharpness and contrast, and everything to do with the plane of focus not being where it should be. :)

Only the first two questions were directed at you. ;)
Anyways, yes, it is indeed a fairly weird variation of AF problems. Quite weird indeed.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, my copy focuses well both in the dark and in daylight, and misfocusing is almost always my own fault.

I love the lens anyways..even the misfocused pics come out nicely..like the last one up there, i really wanted the focus more around the eye, but its pretty clear even websized the nose is in focus for whatever reason

The Zeiss is fantastic! But are you willing to live without the autofocus? In effect I think the image quality is quite similar, with the Sigma delivering images that are just as good.

Yes, all of my lenses are currently manual lenses. I've learned how to use them quick enough for action shots so i barely rely on the AF focusing on the Sigma. Idk the weight differences though, this sigma is quite big when i just want to lug my 5D around with it. So the idea of replacing it with the zeiss is in my mind..

Well honestly, it's the size. And ironically, this lens is the second least used lens in my kit. I'm always reaching more for my 35 f1.4 and now this 135 2.8 i have. I'd like something that's not so big for when i just want to lug the DSLR around town. I think it's just me though. The images i produce with this lens just isn't making me "smile" anymore. It's a fantastic piece of glass, don't get me wrong there. I just don't want it anymore.

In the past, i've thought about switching it and getting the canon 50 1.4 but i'll be more concerned about the AF motor dying on me lol.

That and i just bought a adapter to mount my nikkor 50 f1.4 onto the 5DII. If this sells, i'll consider replacing it with another 50mm (like the zeiss) or just use the money to fund my purchase of a fuji x100 during the next upcoming week.

Yeah, from what you are saying a fuji system or something like that sounds like a logical step for you. I recently got a couple of micro 4/3s bodies and lenses, and much as I love my canon gear and glass, there's something to be said for going out the door with a camera and a pair of nice lenses which all fit in a jacket pocket:D
