May I make a few suggestions to those who are new to using any f1.4 lens hand held in low light (I haven't seen it elsewhere in this thread): use only a single point of focus, set your camera to shutter priority at 1/80th or 1/100th, depending on your steadiness, and then shoot away. If your intent is to isolate a subject at the f1.4, then set the aperture priority to 1.4 and control the shutter speed with your ISO until you have the 1/80th or 1/100th (or quicker) to avoid camera shake. Although the DOF is devilishly thin at f1.4, you may find some of the focus issues lessened. I LOVE this lens, it is sharp beyond belief, although I must admit my first copy was horribly front focusing. Fortunately, the camera shop let me take it outside for a few hours as dusk . . . and then exchange it for the perfect second copy I now have.

^Had it for awhile and it was a great great lens. Not super sharp at 1.4 but 2.0-2.8 was outstanding with great bokeh. Much better than 1.8 because it was fast and bokeh more pleasing. I sent mine in just because I wanted to make sure it was perfect for our newborn and it only took a week to come back calibrated. I sent in body and lens cost me a about $40 to ship they paid 3 day shipping back...Good Luck :)

It might happen. I got mine and it front focused terribly. But once I sent it in and got it calibrated, I was absolutely in love. Such a huge upgrade over the 1.8 it's silly. It's in a class above the Canon 1.4 even, and gives the L a run for its money

I mean it's nothing to write home about in terms of sharpness, but I'd consider it a pretty stellar performance for f1.4. At f2.8 it's super duper sharp... at f4-f8 it's dangerous.

I'd hate to have to send my camera in.. I wish they could just get their act together and release proper products out on the market 100% of the time, and not 6/10. :(

just send it in lens only and say you are shooting with a 5D2. They should get close enough that you can dial it in with MFA. You're in NY already so the turnaround would be crazy fast. You could drop it off even, it's in Rokokoanidkonononon or however' it's spelled

I'm in Washington D.C. this week until Sunday, and we toured Arlington's National Cemetery today. The flags were flying half-mast today, they were burying soldiers. When one soldier played Taps on the trumpet, I cried like a baby. It brought me back to my Grandpa's funeral when they played amazing grace on bagpipes.
By the way, if there are any soldiers or veterans on this website, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the service and sacrifice you have made.

Very very disappointed in sigma. They've had my lens once for 3 weeks and couldn't get it right, so i took my body and lens in for a second time. they change the optics and focus mechanism but its still front focus.

I'm using on a 5Dc and also on a 1DsII, both bodies show about 10mm front focus wide open at minimum focus distance. looks like i'll have to buy the canon one now as the shop and sigma have agreed to refund in full. :(

My guess is that there are many more people that have good luck with these than don't and that it is mainly the people that struggle with them that are posting neg. comments. All I know is that I have had three sigma lenses and all have been perfect. Feel bad for the folks that are missing out on such a great lens because they are scared of getting a bad one.

I might keep it and upgrade to a 5D2 so i can use the micro focus adjust ( good excuse ;) )

To those who are scared to try the lens - buy used. I bought mine here a few weeks ago on the forum and this copy worked well for the previous owner. Why not just buy an used one? That's how I managed to get a good copy, through the 2 copies I both obtained this way.

It's worth it IMO since the image quality is nearly indistinguishable from the 50L, but many times cheaper. I know because I've went through two Sigmas and now the 50L. Only reason I now have the 50L is it focuses a little better and I like Canon lenses more, but for a poor student like me the price tag puts quite a dent.
