The fractilius plugin does work with GIMP, if that's what you mean by "that free GNU software". But you need the photoshop plugin to do so. That's how I use it. But you still need the non-free fractilius plugin ;)

I wish the plugin had more presets, but at least it lets you save your own. I sit and hit random for 5 minutes and save a bunch as I go for different potential future projects :)

i only use 2 presettings then change the line thickness and sharpness..i use sketch and glow 100..also after iv ran frac i go to edit - fade frac.some times fading it makes it look better.
i think theres enough settings..Whats a challenge is finding images that are made for this plug in..bright colours work great with glow 100 and fine detail works great with sketch..imo :)
its all about taste..some people hate this plugin.and some people cant get enough of it(like me) :) i love using the sketch on dragons and damselfly's

cripes if one had the time you could turn a video into an animated video with something like this. Even a few dozen frames at 6fps would look pretty spiffy as an animated file.
Kinda reminds me of that animated movie Titan A.E. because they had some characters which looked like this technique was used to render them.

OK, I downloaded the demo into PSE 6. I had to go to edit>preferences>plugins> and set up a new plug in folder with the Redfield plug-in in order to get the filter to show up in the filter drop down.
Here's a first trial.
Great; now I have another way to kill more time in front of the monitor!

Hi,
How did you get rid of all the little Demo watermarks? My Trial version creates heaps of little DEMO logos all over the pic. It also takes forever to convert the file..
Neat programme though I'd like to get the full version...

Awesome images! Yet another distraction! (my wife will just love my stumbling on this) Says to wife: "Can I play now, Can I play now!"
I'm going to download the demo, and likely buy the plugin.
Reminds me of an effect I remember several years ago in a Corel photo application that turned an image into a "pile of sticks". Don't know how else to describe it. This is much more advanced and colorful though.
Thanks Macro Junkie for starting this!
To all: Love the images, just superb!
Clearly; the most colorful, amazing, image laden thread I have seen.

The watermarking of the images with "demo" did not occur in a file that I created with Helicon Focus. Other raw and jpeg files included the watermark. Why did that happen? Who knows?? The plug in is cheap enough to not fret too much about it.

Got the plug in and started experimenting on some older images:
Had to try a duck! (what else?)

A lizard from my backyard:

Tried many settings, ended up with custom settings for both...
This is just too much fun :D

Absolutely right Troy...probably used the same lens that renderwerks used on the car shot and steve535 used on his koi image.

Don't apologise Troy, this is a MACRO thread and those pictures clearly are not MACRO and therefore shouldn't be here. I'm surprised the mods haven't pulled them, the clue is in the title "MACRO fractulius thread"

Hey Mick, I don't think that Troy was apologizing nor do I think he should. I got a pretty good chuckle from reading of his reply. Truly, I apologize if I violated any rules by posting in the manner I did. I was only trying to add to the fun.

I’m sorry about breaking the rules also, but on my behalf I shot that koi picture with my 60mm macro lens…that is a great plug in

Unlike most of you, I take macros of plants. I grow carnivorous plants, here's some processed with fractalius.

Obviously not macro, unless the car was a "matchbox" or model car...
My apopogies as I accidently posted the car; as I said in the post, I got carried away. That statement was an edit as I tried to figure how to remove the post and couldn't.
But, if we're going to stick to the letter of the law, there is very little in this thread that is probably actually 1:1, which I believe is the rigid definition of macro. Certanly not ANY of the images I've submitted.

MJ - you're "cream of the crop" - you should know better. This is the macro photo sharing section of the forum. There are other sections for sharing non-macro shots.

haha... i like macro fractilus...but it has gone crazy in my macro addicts group on flickr... i was thinking about banning any further shots as they tend to get away from the part of macro that i like the best . . .the details...
this thread is pretty cool really. . im glad to see macro shooters post... i like the venus fly traps. !

I tried the demo. Very nice but it seems V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W.
I have a quad core running Vista 64 bit.
Is it me or does it run slow for anyone else?

Can be pretty slow - I often do some web surfing whilst waiting for it to finish. Got a lot worse with 5D mk2 size images

Unless the program is optimised to use your quad core chip and can run at 64 bit it will run slower on your machine than it will on my duel core 32 bit machine.
