which battery pack would you use to power your flash (550ex), what is best power for night time photography, especially for racing, using 10D, 20d and/or Mark II bodies.

The batteries in the camera ar egreat...you don't need an auxillary pack. Use Nimh rechargeable batteries for the flash ....a quantum if you need less than 4 second recycle time.

I use a Quantum turbo (very old model - about 10 years I think) and recycle time is excellent and have never run out of power even for weddings. A great bit of kit.

I have two Quantum battery packs, the Battery 1 for Vivitar 283/5 and Canon flashes, and the Battery 2 for Metz.

Years ago I thought about the Turbo but the Turbo's quick recycling is because it gets plugged into the flash's AC socket. Now that's OK, but the problem is that you still need batteries in the flash as well to power up the flash's electronics. The last thing that I'd want is one more set of batteries to worry about.

In any case since I got the Canon's I just use the NiMH batteries and they've worked great for the last two years. No umbilical cords either!

I use a Turbo 2+2 for my 550EX and I would not shoot a wedding without it. You may not need the recycle time for what you do. There are instances, like wedding photography and battery warmth, where you need it. Otherwise the AA batteries are fine. I love mine and am thinking about buying a backup.

I shoot rodeos as an obsession (smirk) and use the quantum turbo. I love it!!! I have the 420 EX and 580EX flashes, and need the fast recycle time. I'm quite content with the quantum(s), and also, I've never had any issue with flash batteries - though I never set out to shoot an event/occasion without a) fresh batteries in the flash, and fresh batteries in the bag, but that's just 'cause I am not a gambler... ;o)
