View Full Version : OK, I'm ready to take the 300D Hack Plunge . . . need to confirm things first

ok, so i've been reading about the Drebel Firmware Hack, and I think that I am now ready to do it, but I just need to confirm somethings before I do. I know that this has been gone over TONS of times on this (and other) forums, but please just bare (bear?) with me because I'm really anal about doing things like this and I want to make sure i know everything before I do it. I will be trully greatful for all your responses
1. My understanding of The Wasia Hack is that it basically unlocks some of the 10D features on your Drebel (FEC, MLU, etc), so it is essentially "adding" features and not taking anything away, right?
2. Does anybody have the most updated version of the Firmware Hack or direct me towards a trusted site to download it? I do a google search on it and tons of sites come up and have different versions. I am looking for the latest.
3. How long does it take to install? Is it as simple as putting it on the CF card and plugging it into your camera?
4. I'm really considering this hack for the FEC, so I dont' have to upgrade from my 420ex. For those of you who are using a 420ex, do you find FEC on the camera enough control, or do you find yourself needing more (such as from a 550 or 580)?
Thanks, again, for your help!

1. AFAIK, yes.
2. I got it from a .ru site, see the sticky for a link.
3. 5 minutes including the download time, depending on how good you are with computers.
4. I have the 550EX and I only discovered the FEC on the jump button a couple of days ago :(

I would think you could still do it, as the camera appears as a disk when it's plugged in - but i've never tried. Get a USB2 memory card reader, they go about 10X faster than plugging into the camera.

Hi Mark
This is my first post to the forum so apologies to all if it goes wrong!!
I 'hacked' my 300D about a month ago, with the same trepidation as you, following on from the information and advice I got from these forums (fora?) so it's time to give a bit back!
1) All existing features remain intact following the hack, but some (selecting recording mode - RAW, Jpeg etc) is now more easily selectable without resorting to the menus
2) I got the hack direct from Wasia's .ru site, and although it seems a hellishly slow connection, I felt it was best to go to the 'source'. this is the address http://satinfo.narod.ru/en/download.html
3) 5 mins to install, instructions are on the website, but also on Canon's web-site for clarity (I'm a bit anal about these procedural things too....!)
4) I use a 420EX and find the FEC a good solution to the underexposure problem (300D/ETTL etc). Generally, when using the 420, I set the FEC to +2/3 and it gets it right most of the time (check the histogram on the first couple of shots)
I hope this is useful, and let's you make the leap to hackdom! Come on in, the water's lovely!
Cheers
Simon

That's a known Problem. All the camera settings must be set to their default values before going back to the Canon software. There's a list of the default settings somewhere, but i don't have the link handy. Try Googling.

I hacked my camera not long after I got it. I've had no problems, everything works perfectly, and the extra features are really handy. Do it!

Well, I might have known it - everybody has found it easy to download and install the 300D/Digital rebel hack - but I HAVEN'T (HAVEN@T)!:(
I downloaded twice -from the authentic source ( from http://satinfo.narod.ru/en/download.html (http://satinfo.narod.ru/en/download.html)) the first time must have taken at least 40 minutes - and that's using Broadband.
After downloading a message appeared when I tried to open the file saying that Windows couldn't open it - being an rar file was the problem.
I was directed to a site where I downloaded a trial version of Win RAR Archiver.
I asked for the opened file to be sent to my CF card in the CF writer.
inserted the card in the camera - no signs of anything having happened.
Had a look at the card on PC - message - "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged"
Tried another download - same URL but using a different link from a post in this forum - downloaded like lightning.
Same result as before when I tried to open file.
I'll be VERY grateful if someone can give me a clue as to what is going on here PLEASE !!!!

Colliewalker,
Check the installation instructions, the file has to be in the root directory on the card I think, but the update instructions on the Canon website will confirm that.
If the file is not in the proper place on the CF card, it is not seen by the camera when you boot it up.

the .RAR file is a "zipped" file, so you need a program to extract it. There is a freeware called 7-ZIP. Just google it, install it and it will extract a .FIR file (E3kr111.fir) which is the file to copy onto the CF card.
Format your CF card before you put the file on it and make sure you have a fully-charged battery in your camera. As soon as you put the card it, follow the on-screen directions on the camera.

Digital Rebel/300D Hack
I have made progress - of a sort! the camera recognizes the file - but the problem is as follows:-
File E3kr111B7 when opened in PowerZip 7.0 then bears the reference E3kr111.FIR: this seems the same as the reference for the Canon Firmware Upgrade.
When the CF card is placed in the camera it refers to replacing Firmware 1.1.1 – by Firmware 1.1.1!!!!!!!
This doesn’t make sense to me – am I missing something or doing something stupid.:o ?

You're trying to replace the firmware - you're doing the right thing.

You're trying to replace the firmware - you're doing the right thing.
Many thanks for pointing out that I was heading in the right direction - I thought that all that was happening (in some mysterious way!) was that Firmware 1.1.1 was being reinstalled.
Once I latched on to Custom Function/Set I discovered - to my delight :D - the extra modes.
That has 'made my day'!
Thanks again.
