on ebay they go for like $5 or some really cheap price...

i thought they'd go for $50...

are the $5 ones on ebay good enough to read my cf card faster than the typical usb cord?

As long as they're USB 2.0, yes.

as long as its true usb 2.0 then yes, you should be fine. ive never seen $50 card readers, even for ones that handle all 7 major types, they are usually $40 in most stores or come to around $40 w/ ebay sellers overpriced shipping

im rather fond of the in computer card readers that you can get that fit in the 3.5" slot myself

Look at the USB logo that should be on the package of the card reader. It shouldn't just say "USB 2.0 compatible", but it should also mention "Hi-Speed". If it doesn't, the card reader is compatible with USB 2.0, but it runs at slow USB 1.1 speed.

The logo should look like this:

Note the red "Hi-Speed" label.

Also make sure your computer has USB 2.0 ports: How to Check for High Speed USB (USB 2.0) Support (http://www.usbman.com/Guides/checking_for_usb_2.htm)

Another option is a Firewire (IEEE-1394) card reader. Hard to find, and just about as fast as USB 2.0, but not slowed down by other firewire devices running at the same time.

USB speed can be affected by other devices on the buss.

Hi,

I checked and I have one Intel "enhanced" USB. Does that mean that only one of the USB's in the laptop is enhanced or are they both enhanced. If it's only one, then how can you tell it from the other.

Thanks

ThanksIn the Device Manager, try the menu option View / Devices by connection (not sure what it's called in English!). Now find the USB controller. This view shows you how the devices are connected.

I would find it very strange if you have one fast and one slow port. Most likely they're both fast ports.
