View Full Version : CR2 thumbnail file viewing in Windows Explorer?

There was a great utility publicised here which allowed thumbnail viewing of 300D RAW files in Explorer.

It won't work with 20D etc., files.

Anyone know if any guru is working on this or if it is available?

dpMagic add to the windows shell to allow for thumbnail viewing.

http://www.dpmagic.com

I have tried both and paid for the "full" version.

Thanks guys.

Have gone the dpmagic route and that's working fine.

No need to pay for extra software. Just download the latest codec for your camera/operating system from the canon website.

Unless you have a 64bit Operating System in which case Canon don't support you and say they won't.

Yes, and I wonder why, since all the other applications are offered as 64-bit.

All the others simply work under 64bit in emulation mode but are 32bit apps. The Codec however has to run as part of a true 64bit framework, which it can't because Canon (and most other camera makers) live in the past.

Thank you for the explanation.

Not only Canon lives in the past... so does Adobe with all the Photoshop suite. Because of this, I am running the 32 bit version of windows 7...

PS CS4 and CS5 run happily in 64bit.

PS CS4 and CS5 run happily in 64bit.

And besides, the 32-bit version of most applications run fine in Windows 7 64-bit.

Photoshop even installs BOTH 32 & 64 bit versions by default when installed under 64-bit. (This is because some plugin manufacturers haven't updated for 64-bit... this way you can still use those plugins if you want to by running 32-bit version.... but if not using those plugins, you get the benefits of 64-bit photoshop - using more physical memory!)

Those RAW codecs from Canon, are of course an exception... since they're not an executable application.
Right now I'm looking for threads relating to a 3rd party codec (free, I thought) that would allow RAW viewing in Win 7, 64-bit.

Yes and so does Lightroom 2 and 3 Beta.

Premiere Pro CS5 only runs in 64 Bit.

That's great to know as losing CS4 and LR2 was too high a price to pay for the extra memory... I will start backing up stuff for the conversion...
Thanks all for the info!
