I'll be buying a printer tomorrow, most likely the Canon Pixma Pro 9000. Am I making a mistake? I'm sticking with Canon because of a double your rebate effect I get in Canada that works out pretty well for me, but is trading off the colour fastness of the pigment based inks in the 9500 for the 'popier' colours of the dye based inks in the 9000 a good call? Mostly I'm printing pictures for myself, to display my work around my house. I may be getting into wedding photography in the near future though, and I'm not sure if that might have an effect on my decision. Although clearly price is a factor, I'm MORE than willing to spend the extra money on the 9500 if its deamed the better way to go.
feedback please?
thanks

I'm VERY happy with the Pro9000; it beats my old Epson 1280 in every way.
If you do more color and/or glossy work go with the Pro9000. If you do more B&W and/or matte work, or need the archival abilities of pigment inks, go with the Pro9500.
Keep in mind that the inks are pricier with the Pro9500 and the print speed is about half that of the Pro9000.

Sorry but this won't help:).
I have the Canon 9500 and im very happy with it. When I did research into both I found that most review sites pointed to the 9500 as being a better overall printer then the 9000, though both were very good.
Have a look at:http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/interactive/Canon%20Pro%209500/page_1.html
Also this link does a comparison of the three main A3 contenders: http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/printers/Pigs/page_1.html

Do you ever find the prints on the 9500 to have more subdued colours than you might like?
I'm thinking I'll end up sticking to the 9000. I don't think I can justify nearly twice the price.

If the difference is twice the price then I would be hard pressed to go for the 9500 over the 9000 but here in AUS the difference is only $390, $960 vs $1350 hence why I went for the 9500.
In the end it's something only you can answer, both will give you great looking prints. Apart from print quality they use two completely different print technologies both with their own advantages and disadvantages. My suggestion is look at the different reviews on the sites I and others here have given you and read up about the differences between Dye (9000) and Pigment (9500) printers.
P.S To answer your question about "subdued colours", not if you use the correct paper for the print :)
