hey everyone, i just got a Canon SD1100IS as a basic point and shoot after shooting with a Canon digital SLR for a while. i needed something that would be better for me on the go.

anyway...

everything seems to be working fine except for one thing... during video recording, the microphone doesn't seem to be picking up any sound.

the "Sound Memo" function also does not pick up any sound from the microphone.

i've tried the obvious stuff like checking if "mute" is turned off, the volume is turned up...

but is there something i'm missing? please help! thanks!

EDIT: oh, and i don't think it's the speaker because the camera "beeps" and "boops" and makes the start-up sounds like it is supposed to!

The only thing I can think of is that you're finger might be covering the microphone. The micro phone isn't great on the SD1000 IS anyhow.

Is this on playback in the camera or on your computer? IIRC the sound memos are a separate file; is that being created?

hi guys, thanks for the responses!

1. at first i thought my finger may have been covering the mic as well but i've made sure i haven't done that.

2. i've tried playback on both the camera and the computer: no sound, i'm afraid.

any other thoughts?

it's frustrating because when i first got the camera, it picked up sound just fine but suddenly stopped working. which makes me think either (a) the camera has some physical problem or (b) i have the camera recording video at some function or whatever that doesn't record sound (which is entirely frustrating because it may be a problem that could be fixed with the click of one setting).

How about the sound memo files? Are they being created? But it does sound like the camera had some kind of failure.

yes! sound memo files are actually being created. the minute:second ticker goes up, the files are dated and saved. but just no sound recording, no ambient noise or hiss. it's completely silent during playback.

That's a pretty certain indicator that the camera has a problem - if the electronics were getting any feed from the mike you'd at least pick up some hiss.
