Flash for a 300D

Been looking around to see what flashes I can buy and use for the 300D

Shortlist:

1. Sigma EF 500 ST DG
2. Canon 540EX
3. Sunpak Powerzoom 4000AF

Now, the thing is I'm also considering getting a studio set-up and a 20D at some point perhaps later in the year. So will need something I can grow into rather than out of. The canon is nice but a little out of my price range :cry:

Any good advice welcome.

I think you mean the Canon Speedlite 550EX, 580EX or 420EX, not 540EX. The Sunpak claims to be "TTL", not "E-TTL" for Canon, and you want E-TTL. Get a written assurance that it'll work as an E-TTL unit or forget it. I stuck with Canon for my flashes, but I've heard a lot of nice things about the Sigma. Maybe if I need another 420EX-class flash, I'll get the Sigma instead.

I have the Sig Super, Love it!

550EX was my choice. Overall quality/price, I think it's the best choice out there.

I went with the 550EX, for features and compatability. I probably could have gotten the 420 to be honest.

If you do get the 20D you will not want the Sigma ST model. You need the Super DG - it has more features. It is a good light, but the 580EX is perfect with the 20D. Great combination!

i have a sigma super 500 and a sunpak pz 5000. the sigma works great with canon dslrs, including the 300d. by working great, i mean it seems to expose well at all reasonable distances. it also properly behaves as a fill flash when in AV or TV modes (exposes for ambient light). the sunpak works well in manual mode or as a slave. note that if you use this in the shoe, it won't allow the camera to expose for ambient (fill). the camera will expose for flash only. i like it as it was cheap and has been very handy for a variety of situations.
