I never saw or heard of fireweed before latigid Soe
and the bug looks new to me too

Marie, for a larger view of fireweed, try this link. Fireweed grows all over the western US and Canada, particularly where a fire has burned the trees. The fireweed is about the first thing to start growing after the fire.
