i am in MN, but barely.

we finally got a photo club as well as a web presence too.

as of right now there is one member that is planning to go to Split Rock Lighthouse on Nov 10 for the yearly memorial lighting for the sinking of the Fitzgerald.
have not been to cameratalk in awhile either. they seemed to have alot of spammer issues.

I do mostly weddings and portraits and I don't own a good telephoto lens yet, I rent one for my weddings. That has kept me from parking out there for hours. Maybe that's a good thing.

I am quite an aviation buff and have spent many hours out there just watching. I've taken a few photos, but nothing spectacular.

Have you ever sat on the East ramp at MOA? If they are using Rwy35 for approach you can get some nice shots from there. However, it seems to be mostly RJs, DC9s, and A318-319-320s, nothing too large.

Well Dean (Montdj) and I braved the chilly wind this morning out at BDR. It was really quiet. I only saw three eagles and they pretty much stayed out of range.

My parents live in Buffalo and that's where I grew up. They live on a lake and usually the swans will hang for awhile every year. They are great animals -- good luck with the shots! If I had known sooner, I may have made a trip out there, and swung by the parents afterwards.

Yes we started at 9:30am and I had it done by 2pm. It was only 14 square and I had 5 grunts to do the hard stuff. I just had to run the gun and shoot down shingles.

Hi there!

There are all sorts of good photo opportunities. What are your interests and do you have a car available? Minneapolis, St. Paul are not the most public transportation friendly cities.

In the downtown Minneapolis area the following are good spots; Stone Arch bridge, Hennipen Avenue bridge, the new 35w bridge, Nicollet Mall, Walker Sculpture garden. Also parts of the U of MN are photogenic.

EDIT: I do have a rental for transportation. One quick question, I noticed that Minn is way North of Arizona, and when I was recently in Washington, (North as well) I noticed that sunset was VERY late in the day, When does the sun go down this time of year? Washington was like 9:30 pm. I thought that was crazy late compared to here.

The Cherry is in great shape. I was there just a few hours ago....

I've got to tell you I went to every recommended place and some.
What a wonderful city you all have here..!! Lots to do and great friendly people. I can't believe how many pro looking photographers are out here.
While I was at Stone Arch bridge, there were several folks there shooting portraits with light boxes and off camera flash set-ups. I got to observe and really learn a lot just by watching. There was another gentleman there shooting 4x5 images of the bridge just off to the West. He said that about 2 years ago he got an image that was just spectacular from that location and has not been able to produce another comparable one since. He also mentioned that there's about 2 weeks out of the year the sun set's just over that bridge to produce the colors he liked. I think I got lucky and got some great shots as well. I then went to the bottom water edge and got some nice shots of the bridge with the lights underneath.

The state capitol is great and that big church just down the street is amazing. I think it was St Pauls church. Went to the Mall and I believe Prospect park where there is a tall historic water tower on the top. I tried to get some panos of the city from that location at about 130mm..

Anyway, thanks so much for the tips, because if I didn't have them to start with, I would never had gotten around as well as I did. Almost wish I had more time to stay, but leave tomorrow afternoon.

Now have to find the time to PP some of them.

Just and FYI guys, a B-17 and B-24, along with a P-51 will be at the Anoka County Airport and St. Paul Airport later this week and over the weekend. They will be doing rides, and I assume be available for photos and tours. I'll be doing a ride in the B-17, hopefully out of St. Paul, but I am not sure what day yet.

When I first came on this forum it seemed like there was NOBODY from MN. To my surprise tonight I stumble upon this thread. Currently I am in Faribault just off of 35.
I am originally from the Brainerd area. Ive lived in Rockford (worked in Buffalo, Monticello and Delano), Minnetonka, St. Michael (worked in Maple Grove), Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center when I was little, Anoka/Andover, Eagan, and a few other places.
I go to college in MPLS and frequent the Burnsville area, along with ocassional trips to MOA.

I am down for whatever this group wants to get going. There is so much to photograph and I've lived here a good portion of my life. Downtown MPLS is simply breathtaking to me. So much culture.

I'm glad i searched and posted in here! I wasn't entirely sure what bumping a year old thread would bring. Minnehaha Falls is a wonderful place to visit and i normally do a couple times over the winter.

Thinking about Saturday AM, not sure about the weather. Jay, is it worth shooting if it is cloudy?

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, clouds are fine. I actually don't think i've been there on a sunny day. Even night time is really a lot of fun as there is a very bright, almost spotlight on the falls. There is also a very orange streetlight that does wonders on your white balance :rolleyes: I'm setting a reminder now to put up my other set from the falls taken at night

Thanks for the inspiration on the falls. Was going to do a family shoot in our house and now we've decided to do it at the falls tomorrow!

Whoops! Wish i saw this a little sooner, i could've offered some advice! Heck, i will anyways for future reference. When you get to the falls, easiest way down is with the stairs. Just grab a hold the hand rail as best you can and step/slide on down; put all camera equipment in front of you as it is very easy to slip backwards.

Once down there, you simple walk past a fence. Technically, i do not believe you are supposed to pass this area but i'm sure you will see the sometimes dozens of people that do. I've seen a group of younger kids get a ticket for being behind the falls BUT they were also partaking in some illegal puffing :lol: You'll see paths where people climb up and behind the falls and just follow their footsteps.

On the way back up, don't even bother with the stairs. When coming out from the falls, look to your left (while still up under them). You'll see a path leading up to the rock landscaped wall which you follow to the top of the stairs and viola. There is also more than the falls to take photos of! Many neat bridges along trails and over the Minnehaha creek

hey guys glad i just found this thread, I'm a student at The U and I've been looking to get together with some photographers and try and set up some fashion style shoots. been meaning to get out and do some shooting! let me know if anyones interested!

Subscribing. There's a club in St. Cloud, but they generally don't shoot. They sit and talk. If anyone's getting together to push the button for a while, I'd love to know about it.
