I have my own domain and webspace and I now need to upload a large number of large image files for a client on my website. Is there an easier way to do this except just coding by hand.. photo by photo? Basically what I need is thumbnails and links to the large files, all protected by password.
I have no idea where to even start looking for this, so I would really appreciate any help!

Photoshop and Lightroom are capable or creating a website for viewing images but it can't password protect them. How are you going to prevent them from downloading the images?
You should also waterstamp each one using photoshop's automate batch.
I'm only referring to these programs because they are what I use.

The description of what you want to do is not entirely clear. Do you already have the thumbnail version of each image? These thumbnails will obviously need to be placed into an webpage and linked to the larger image. All of this is easily done with HTML and actually most photo imaging software packages offer some type of utility to do this. Now as for password protecting the webpage where the thumbnails reside would require a little bit of work. Finding a small Javascript program that password protects a webpage is easy. If you are comfortable with editing HTML and working with Javascript then placing this Javascript program into the webpage is a peice of cake. Otherwise it may require some homework on your part to learn how to implement this correctly. Again, it's not difficult but does require some basic understanding of HTML and where to place the Javascript code.

Yes, I have some basic knowledge of html and I could code that.. I was just wondering if there was an easier way out! :)
Also, I want them to be able to download the full size originals.

If you don't protect the images using a script of some kind then they can simply just right click and do a "save image as..." option for downloading. Otherwise you'll need to do some kind of coding to provide a utility to allow the customer to download the images.

Subscribe to a site like exposure manager, you can make their galleries look like your site, link directly to it (customers never know they left your site) plus they have batch uploaders thru a web page or ftp. They also disable right-click and watermark your images however you like. They'll take orders (even credit cards) and you can have prints done form them and they ship or just do self fullfillment. There are several sites that do this, this is just the one I use.

is great! Can protect your photos there. Quick uploading and can make gallery look like your own. I have used them for 2 years now and I upload 1000's of shots.

Thanks, guys! I'm not sure I can go with a paid service at this point, but I will keep these in mind for future reference, definitely. I guess for now I'll just be coding by hand.. *sigh* :)

You could use the eostemplate. Cost you a few bucks in the first place but it will do exactly what you want. Depend on how you value your time

I use Gallery2. It is free, can use a paypal checkout, can password protect albums, it works very well for what it is.
My Gallery2. I use the theme gecko slightly modified:

I have just started using a program called 'porta'. You can download it here -http://www.stegmann.dk/mikkel/porta/
it is ridiculously easy to use. You put the photos you want in a folder, you tell the program where to find them, and it creates a gallery for you.
With some minimal coding you can add your own header to the webpage it creates, and then you can fairly easily integratethe gallery into your website.
It might be worth looking at.

If you want an easy way to display photos: www.jalbum.net
If you want a way to easily sell prints or products: Photographers Shopping Cart (http://www.picturespro.com)
EOS template is ok, not great, i've used it for a couple of years but i'll replace it soon. It's just not very user friendly for either the photographer or the customer.

You can also sell prints thru Jalbum. It has built in Paypal cart. I have used it a couple time for some small shoots.

Is that thru their new hosting service?

Is that thru their new hosting service? Unless they've upgraded it, they've had it for over a year, long enough to work any bugs out. I think it only works with some of the skins, but they have some nice galleries.

No it is just built into the latest version of the album software. You can turn it off or on depending if you want to sell the images or if they are just for viewing. I just use my own hosting and their album
