My favourite photos need help!

Hi to all :)
Here is one of my current favourite photos of my Macey. Sods law would have it that it leaves a lot to be desired, technically. Is it better cropped? I'd love some suggestions as to how to improve it, if at all possible.

Lightening it up and adding some contrast would help greatly. If you have PS, play a bit with curves and contrast adjustments.
