Hi guys, my wife and I were lucky enough to get some tickets for the 4th round matches at Wimbledon yesterday.
I'm new to SLR photography, having had my 450D for a fortnight now, but a friend of mine had given me his old 75-300mm lens [he now shoots with Nikon kit] with the caution that "It's not very good"!
The more I've read about the lens on the net, the more I thought it looked unsuitable; slow AF etc, etc.
However, I'm pretty pleased with the end results, especially shot handheld at full zoom. What do you think?

They are excellent from a person that has not done much sports photography before! The wide stadium shot is superb.Well done!

I agree, they are excellent for a first attempt, and I also like the wide shot; very well seen. Nice colours and they are quite sharp for that lens....
Cheers,

Man you are so lucky to get to Wimbledon. I try to get to the Sydney NSW Open each year but would love to get to Wimbledon and take some shots on grass.

Excellent stadium shot, What baffles me is the use of camera gear within the stands at SW19.
In pic 1 there is clearly a guy videoing the game stood next too PC Plum, You wouldnt get away with even using your phone in most football stadiums these days.
I sure hope to go Wimbledon next year, With or without gear. I defo think its a event to be at in your lifetime. Now then, how would I get tickets?

i always brag that a gymnist and a professional tennis player are the best conditioned athletes on the planet. your photos really do wonders for my argument. the close ups of the male players speak volumes about the conditioning required to play at that level.........BRAVO....GREAT WORK:cool:

when you consder the stage, the two players involved, the match saving points, the lenght of the match, the rain breaks at pivital moments it was one of the best of this era thats for sure

Managed to wangle courtside tickets for yesterday's final (well, 2nd row), also got my 70-200 IS f/2.8 through the door, it's fair to say I took a good number of photos!!
Will get the pick of the bunch up here as soon as I can, haven't been through them all yet but I reckon there's a few corkers in the collection.
Awesome photos first up by the way, really top notch effort for a rookie (or for anyone with that lens actually!). I think the big difference in lenses comes into effect when conditions aren't perfect, such as at the end of play last night, the f/2.8 was crucial for still maintainig a usable shutter speed.

been involved with tennis as a player, coach and now sadly a spectator,,,,didnt think nadal had a shot after what he did to federer at the french...thought that was all the modivation federer would need.
this match was by far the BEST MATCH IN THE HISTORY OF OUR SPORT. i saw borg/Mcenroe,,,sampras and cash,,agassi'S dramatic comeback at the french to win it in 5,,,sampras single handedly knocking the russions out of the davis cup,and no one commanded centre court like boris becker and his great wins,,,,,,,this match, however, surpasses everything. no one lost in this match,,,federer, nadal and TENNIS, WERE ALL WINNERS,,,,,,,,,,,,COULDNT BELIEVE WHAT I SAW:)

Jammy bugger! Looking forward to seeing your shots though.
You're right about the light though. We got lucky with the weather, I'm sure I couldn't have taken anything meaningful in last evenings light with that lens.

Did you guys see the flashes at Nadal's celebration? It illustrated just how dark it was, the TV cameras were almost overwhelmed with the difference in brightness.

Why are people wondering how he got his camera in?
Seems a bit odd, neraly every sports venue in the UK allows you take your camera in.
Is it much tighter in the US

I was glued to the TV watching Rafa beat Federer. Glad to see him win. What an incredible match. I enjoyed every minute and you are so fortunate to have attended.
Your shots are excellent! I hope you were able to enjoy the match in between takes.
