I need to get long.

Very long.

So, I'm curious what 500MM f/4 shots using 2X extenders really look like, as it appears the 500 is about the right weight to realistically use for wildlife and BIF work.

And, I'm curious about the comparison of 300 f/2.8 IS L + 2X + 1.4X.

^^ Great shots you posted and, yeah, sure, astro photogs (who are clearly more crazy than 'us', LOL) cheat, because they're long and wide.

The sigmonster is just plain huge -- Interesting 1.4, 1.4 stack -- shockingly good IQ.

Thanks, Romy. The 400 is a monster, but it really is a nice lens. It also offers the only means of autofocus beyond 840 mm (600/4 & 1.4X) that is available.

On a side note, I had talked with you on another forum about the 40D and live view. I just got my 40D, and if it ever gets warm outside, I intend to use live view quite a bit. I think it'll be very useful.

Working backwards from the info, I'd say it's the 300mm.

I only know because I was about to post one of mine.

Very nice, Dusty. Given the great shots taken with 600 mm (actual focal length) lenses, I don't think that the OP will be too strict on the hard-and-fast 800 mm rule.

Sam, I'll try and dig up a 300 + 2X + 1.4X shot....

Roy - Nice ones. That 400/5.6 with the stack does very well!

Romy - Nice moon. I can't wait for it to get a little warmer so that I can really use live view outdoors. I've been playing with it in the house, but it's 9 degrees F outside and windy.

Hey, speaking of moon, I believe that there's an eclipse coming up on the 20th or 22nd or something like that. Not sure where it'll be visible, but if the weather is respectable, I'll be out there with the long lens, tripod, and stack!

O-kay we can all go home now, the heavy hitters are weighing in!

Here's some from 500mm f/4L IS with 2x TC.
I'm going to try and post some of the "not so good ones" too, the fact is that with the 2X my keeper ratio plummets

This first one is reduced jpeg but has no other PP. Not a good way to show it off, but just shows IMHO what happens to contrast etc. Lack of Sharpness could be due to other things in this case, rested on beanbag out a car window.

Kingfisher in flight @ 1000mm hand held, HH and loss of shutter speed impacts image.
http://images.fotopic.net/?iid=yozk3b&outx=600&noresize=1

1000mm hand held, this one shows the type negative impact I get, as keeper ratios go down considerably. Color was washed out (big boost in PP is noticeable) and 1000mm tracking BIF, is tough, and again shutter speed plummeted as I did not bump ISO enough for a fast bird @ f/10
http://images.fotopic.net/?iid=yozk38&outx=600&noresize=1

700mm
IMHO, on the 500mm things get MUCH better with the 1.4x, in fact, it's practically as good as the 500mm alone.

Well, I started with the 400 f/4 DO.

With a 1.4 or 2X TC and a bit of PP, it performs nicely.

Wide open, it is impressive.

I'll post when I have some solid comparison shots.

What continues to amaze me is that 800MM really is not that much reach.

Now, I'm curious about the 800MM f/5.6 -- Looks like it is not yet available. I am surprised any vendor would announce an unavailable thing in camera gear.

This shot of a great egret was taken with a 30D, a 100-400, + a Sigma 1.4x and a Sigma 2x. This shot was also cropped since the egret was so far away and standing on a sandbar in the middle of the lake.

1/320s f/11.0 at 800.0mm iso400 (exif doesn't show the second TC)

This is a shot taken with just the 100-400 at 400mm to give you an idea of how far out the egret was.
The other birds mixed with the egrets are American white pelicans and these shots were taken at Reelfoot lake in TN.

So many people ask for TC samples with different lenses, so it is often difficult to find a lens/TC sample. If we consolidate all TCs with different lenses here, it would be easy to just search the TC archive for samples. If you have multiple brands and want to post, it would be great to post the same subject with the different TCs as well.

If we all add the details in our posts of the TC and lenses utilized, it will be easy to search.

SAMPLE:
Body: <body>
Lens: <lens>
TC: <brand, x factor>
Mods: <taped pins, etc>

Please post your photos if you do use Tele -extenders, I sometimes get the feeling that I'm one of the few that use these things. I think they're a real useful tool but about the only time I see mention of anyone else using them is on something like the 300 2.8 for bird photography (oh boy would I love that lens).

This will be my first post, here. I've enjoyed reading and studying.

The first 7 were taken before sending my 70-200 f4 IS L to Canon, with 40D body, to hopefully improve accuracy of MFD, wide aperture shots. I had been stunned by the sharpness of the lens, and well pleased with it when used with Canon 1.4x II.

For some unknown reason, Canon replaced the IS unit/lenses as part of my "adjustment." This ticked me off, because the lens is not necessarily the super-sharp lens I sent in. To be fair, they may have ID'd an issue that would have eventually caused me trouble. Focus accuracy at MFD seems marginally improved, but still need more shooting to be sure.

I have not been able to do much since the gear was returned, so the jury's still out on the lens element replacement. However, I was a bit alarmed by the fringe or CA (most noticeable on big guy's calf) in the final extender photo, taken with the returned lens. However, I had not made shot with the extender in this type of light before sending in my newish gear.

These were all taken at 280mm. Most were stopped down to f8 or further. All hand-held with IS. Half still have EXIF, but others were processed with PSP 7, and had their EXIF stripped. All from .jpg originals on the 40D. All are resized by Flickr.

Jannie, I like the 1.4x shots. The 2x do seem flat and lacking sharpness, which goes along with its rep/rap.

Ed I've got to shoot that 2x combination stopped down to see how much I can get out of them, the ones I posted for the 2x were wide open and the ones for the 1.4 were stopped down so it does make me hope that I can improve the 2x results. Canon redesigned that 2x to improve this so I'll keep trying to find if it has a sweet spot.

hi guys.. im planning to get tele extender and im really confused about certain things

Mods: taped 3 pins==>whats this? you mean the pins inside the lens mount? you only do this to third party lensmakers right?

canon or kenko? real bang for money. planning to get the 2x

im gonna use this to shoot concerts.. gonna be using EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM

buying a 400mm f/4L is a bit heavy in my pocket. its either i use a telecon or not.

tnx a biggie!! :)

You tape the last 3 pins on the end with the greater number of pins on the teleconverter, not the lenses, and I believe of the two you list, the Kenko is the better bang for the buck, and seems to work in many cases where the Canon will not.

This thread should help:

Just got the TC, and it's too dark out for any decent 'real life' shots, so here are some
quick indoor "tests". TC reports to the camera and EXIF just fine with the 70-200 2.8 IS.

All shot at f/4 (with or without the TC) and the focal lengths do no include the 1.6x crop
factor of the camera, but they do include the TC (when applicable). They list what the
EXIF reported.

95mm, no TC

http://benjohnson.smugmug.com/photos/526086379_W5LvW-M.jpg

98mm, with 1.4x TC

http://benjohnson.smugmug.com/photos/526080024_AwSY9-M.jpg

200mm, no TC

http://benjohnson.smugmug.com/photos/526079928_8g5yt-M.jpg

195mm, with 1.4x TC

http://benjohnson.smugmug.com/photos/526079905_o3qZQ-M.jpg

For the last comparison, I took the "200mm, no TC" shot, cropped down 1.4x then
resized it back up to the original resolution and took the 100% crop in the same manner
as all the other shots.

280mm (equivalent crop), no TC

http://benjohnson.smugmug.com/photos/526079984_ywxAT-M.jpg

280mm, with 1.4x TC

http://benjohnson.smugmug.com/photos/526080000_4phBV-M.jpg

Not sure why the last shot came out so poorly. Overall it looks like a minor loss of
sharpness, but in the conditions I took these shots it is hard to differentiate between
noise and printer resolution on the box.

I'm happy with the IQ in the short and midrange of the lens, but I hope the 200mm +
1.4x shots come out better tomorrow. That is really the only place the TC is being
utilized, and it would be quite a waste if it performed worse than simply cropping the
normal image and blowing it up 1.4x :(

shutter speed was 1/200 on that last one for a 280mm lens. Did you use a tripod and mirror lockup, etc. Shake could have been a factor in the softness.

I also think boxes may not have enough detail to form a good conclusion

One more thing, when you upscale the image you're also upscaling the noise
also notice the print texture itself is sightly sharper on the TC version, compare the blue area

Thanks for all the suggestions. My "testing" was far from perfect. Just some quick
handheld shots with IS on. Took 4 of each and picked the best one, my guess is that the
one truly at 280mm just had more camera shake than the rest. Good points about the
box resolution and the noise increase when upsizing. I'll try to get some better tests
tomorrow. Any suggestions for a good subject?

800 x 2 = 1600 @ f11 plus the 1.6 crop factor is 2560mmf11 ...

pretty much your heartbeat will cause lens movement. It looks soft and I would suggest you probably get a 50D to get some fine tuning with micro adjustments.

Softness I can attribute to these factors
- 2x Extender
- Body cannot handle AF @ f/11. 1-series can center AF @ f/8
- Air temp on a hot noon day
- Tripod is maxed out at 7kg

dolina, was that a crop or the original framing?

And, yeah, shooting at long focal lengths is a pain! It takes a lot of work to get one good shot. I routinely have used the 2x TC just on the 300 f/2.8 IS and it takes patient work to get keepers -- I can imagine with the 800 + 2x.

I got kindof burned using the 2x with my 300, but that's because I was always reaching for the farthest things and so had to crop closely, and so not-so-good.

Of course I'd still try the same thing with the 600, oh well. Never enough reach.

But the 1.4x is definitely useable. I even now pretty much have it glued to my 100-400 for now.

:o I know that people don't use 5DMKII for sport, but for me it's working perfectly  nearly no AF troubles (even with stacked TC and no tape on connector) and with my gears I get a perfect sharpness. I don't have the budget for a 1Ds and I don't like crop sensors even if I own a 50D:(

Thanks! I guess it is a difference of setup, settings, weather condition or an uncalibrated monitor.

I think weather conditions have a lot to do with moon shots. I notice that my winter shots are crisper than the summer shots, the cold weather eliminates alot of haze in the atmosphere.

The Brown Shrike, Lanius cristatus is a bird in the shrike family that is found mainly in Asia. It forms a superspecies with the closely-related Red-backed Shrike, L. collurio, and Isabelline Shrike, L. isabellinus. Like most other shrikes, it has a distinctive black &quot;bandit-mask&quot; through the eye. and is found mainly in open scrub habitats, where it perches on the tops of thorny bushes in search of prey. Several populations of this widespread species form distinctive subspecies which breed in temperate Asia and migrate to their winter quarters in tropical Asia. They are sometimes found as vagrants in Europe and North America.

I am amazed at the noise control of the 7D. Indeed it is the king of APS-C.

The Long-tailed Shrike or the Rufous-backed Shrike (Lanius schach) is a member of the bird family Laniidae, the shrikes. The eastern or Himalayan race, L. s. tricolor, is sometimes called the Black-headed Shrike.
tricolor race in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

It is a common resident breeder throughout the Indomalayan ecozone from Kazakhstan, through Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indian peninsula except eastern states, to New Guinea, found on bushes in scrubby areas and cultivation. Winter visitor to southern areas such as southeast India and Sri Lanka.

The White-breasted Woodswallow, Artamus leucorynchus, is a small passerine bird which breeds from the Andaman Islands east through Indonesia and northern Australia. The name "woodswallow" is a misnomer as they are not closely related to true swallows. Instead, they belong to the family Artamidae, which also includes butcherbirds, currawongs and the Australian Magpie.

Taiga Bean Goose (Anser fabalis sensu stricto)

The Bean Goose is a medium to large goose breeding in northern Europe and Asia. It has been split into two species by the AOU (2007), however it is still regarded as a single species by the BOU - see below. It is migratory and winters further south in Europe and Asia.

The length ranges from 68 to 90 cm (27–36 in), wingspan from 140 to 174 cm (55–69 in) and weight from 1.7–4 kg (3.7-8.8 lbs). The bill is black at the base and tip, with an orange band across the middle; the legs and feet are also bright orange.

The upper wing-coverts are dark brown, as in the White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) and the Lesser White-fronted Goose (A. erythropus), but differing from these in having narrow white fringes to the feathers.

Its English and scientific names come from its habit in the past of grazing in bean field stubbles in winter (Latin faba, a bean).

There are five subspecies, with complex variation in body size and bill size and pattern; generally, size increases from north to south and from west to east. Some ornithologists (including AOU 2007) split them into two species based on breeding habitat, whether in forest bogs in the subarctic taiga, or on the arctic tundra.

Wow! Great shots! I've heard nothing good about the 2x extenders, now I want one!

Romy is using possibly the sharpest lens Canon makes. The converter can only magnify what the lens can deliver. Most of the time, poor results are usually operational or a limitation of the main lens. The more powerful the TC, the more it's going to need a very sharp lens and solid technique to give results like a bare lens.

That said, even a mildly sharp lenses can gain extra subject detail and finer subject-level noise with a TC. You have to weigh the operational disadvantages such as loss or compromise of AF, darker viewfinder, etc, against the extra detail gained.
