View Full Version : Working on the start grid and "The Hat"

Something different from my usual on-track action shots. I love working on the start grid of bigger race meetings. I get a chance to take some candid shots that would other wise be impossible. I use my 70-200 2.8IS quite close up in the main, but sometimes my 17-40L. I enjoy the rush on the grid and the very limited time you have to get your shots. These were all taken with my 10D before I parted with it.
Here are a couple from an F3 race:

One from a BTCC meeting:

And honestly, I was only after the Blue Chip web address:

.
To finish, if you followed my Xmas Rally thread you may have noted references to my hat. Well, to dispel all rumours about what I was wearing, here it is :D :

Kenny I really like seeing grid shots. It's especially fun at kart races where you can get a lot of parent/child interaction along with the helmet shots.
Is that Nelson Piquet in the car or an Ex - Nelson Piquet car? If it's him what was he driving? Nice pictures.

Lovely shots, Kenny :)
KartGirlsMom: That's Nelson Piquet Jr, son of the great F1 world champion. Jr. has been running in the British F3 championship for the last couple of years. Nelson Snr. reckons that young Mr. Piquet is better than he was...

Ahhh, Pics with my camera, the penny just dropped. ;-)
Top shots Ken, I'm sure it's current owner will be able to squeeze some good shots out of it once that motorsport season starts proper.
BTW, it just took me a good 30 seconds to notice the blue chip URL. :-D

Hi Cadwell, as you said it is Nelson Jr. In fact he won the F3 championship in 2004 and in the process I cleaned up on bets who would be number one. You didn't comment on the hat, I'm disappointed. I try my hardest to be stylish you know ....
I really do like the grid work. You get a real buzz from it with one ear on the countdown alarm and both eyes on your subject. I like the emotion in the faces or the actions. This shot of Dany Watts is one of my favourite grid shots of all time for what it says rather than for what it is. One of those rare moments you catch and could never be posed:

I forgot about Piquet Jr. It's really sad that sons of the drivers I remember are racing now! I think I remember seeing that he was going to try to get at GP2 drive this year.

 I know the real reason you wear it ;) It's because all the drivers recognise it and pose for you on the slowing down lap letting you get that all important "victory wave shot"... :p Or am I giving trade secrets away now :o

Kenny:
Re: the hat.
Once a Texan, always a Texan. Now we have to work on your accent.

For those not in the know, some drivers are aware of my headgear and will give a wave to the camera/me as they pass on the slowing down lap. One driver decided to go one better and do a donut, only to throw the car off the track. I was made to swear on a stack of service manuals never to reveal his name or publish the pictures. By some means I know nothing about, his pit crew did get hold of a CD of the pictures. ;)
Not sure about the accent, I'm more of a West Coast man, laid back, relaxed and an intense dislike of cattle. I can't chew tobacco either, it stains my teeth and I can't hit a spitoon to save my life.

LOL You expect me to believe that? That web addy isn't that long nor hard to remember Kenny.
My wife used to get my film shots and wonder why I took pictures of beautiful women. I wish they would have had a sign so I could have used such a lame excuse too.
