Hows things across the ditch?
You guys suffering from crappy weather and fuel price hikes
Yep, and yep :p
Funny that, whilst on our honeymoon in NZ in January, the wife and I were surprised with the $1.80 a litre fuel there, when Aus was around $1.40 or so. Now, we're catching up!! What's it going for across the Tasman now?

Not as much as you
We haven't gone over $2 a litre yet.
How's the 1Ds3?
Cheaper to run than my car
Mk3 is great ironic that I shoot 90% on manual now. Just waiting to get out once weather settles down a bit. Have a trip to the snow planned.
Bit of a joke 41 and never been to the snow. Hell been to ausy 2x
$2.18 for super $2.15 unleaded

Looking at the website (http://www.geelongcameraclub.org.au/) it says the club meets every wednesday at 7.30.
Definately keen, just not sure what's involved. My work is a bit all over the shop at the moment with no set days off so I'm not sure if there are weekend meets or anything like that, though with enough notice I could try and roster myself off.
I moved from the far north coast of NSW where it rarely drops below 20 in winter  I'm not used to this cold business!
I see you're a wedding photog as well. If you ever need a second shooter I'm keen to help out :D

Doesn't do what it's told in what way? Funnily enough I have a spare PCB for a 580EX (MkI) which I was going to use to repair mine. Unfortunately my flash is far too rooted for that it would seem.

As in some of the functions .... well .... don't. Like changing channels when on master/slave, or selecting auto lens length - only allows manual focal length to be selected. So it seems some of the functions are not registering. It acts as a master and triggers the second unit have but won't trigger as a slave.

Hmmmm sounds like a swap of the main PCB might fix it... most of the smarts are on that board i think.

Last night I got to the point where I removed the old shutter but decided to stop there because it was already 2am. Reassembly would probably have taken me another 4 hours.
I didn't notice anything obviously wrong with the old shutter. More than likely it is some problem in the actuator rather than the mechanical workings.

Yes, although for some stupid reason it doesn't come with the little ribbon cable that attaches to it. I'll have to un-solder that one from the old shutter and solder it back on to the new one. What a pain in the a$$.

Yep, leads back to the flash capacitor which I learned the hard way. 3 days without a battery and it still wasn't drained!
In other news, I got a confirmed promotion today :) will be "assistant accountant" however I will still be doing all my "reporting analyst/database administrator" work.

Not that we don't all already know this but:
http://canon.com.au/eos/images/downloads/parallel-importing.pdf
Apparently it's a new official statement regarding grey imported bodies. No warranty etc., and suggests (well, it's been confirmed numerous times with Canon) yet again that lenses and "accessories" are covered.

Well, the Buff and D-D are "parallel importers"... places like NDF and Quality Camera Sales are Canon Australia.. but if you were to be buying a body and were unsure I'd just ask.

For all the strobists here, lets talk light stands, umbrellas and those clamp thing's. My recent ventures into the city have resulted in a few thoughts of "the hell I'm paying that for a lightstand/umbrella/clamp, I think I could get it online for cheaper". But the thing is, I'm not sure of exactly what my options are. I can recall we've talked about this in an aussie thread of another era, but I can't find it.
So, for the umbrella I'll want a shoot-through one. I think about 40'' or whatever is good. What would my options be when also considering portability and compactness?
The lightstand. Like the umbrella, I'd prefer to see if I can get a more compact one. Some of the basic ones in the city were $100-$120+. Again, surely it's cheaper online...
I guess it's not fair asking for this advice without paying the phototax. ;) I was in the city today, hanging out with a friend of mine. Haven't edited many of the photos yet, but so far...

Will take a while to arrive though. Dave got the starving student wireless kit late last year and it took a few weeks to land in the country (mostly because MPEX didnt have their act together).
For me, I bought my first stand and umbrella and bracket last week for $100 from Photocontinental. Dad was there with his VIP card and we asked for the best deal. Came down from around $140.

Nope, no way of tracking it. They ship the stuff "Surface Airlift". So it will travel across the US the slowest way then get on a plane to Aust. Some stuff I got recently through Amazon took nearly 2 months to get here.

I have the Lumopro light stands. They are pretty much a clone of the 001B's and cheaper too. The Lumopro umbrella adapters are good too. I have a couple of the WC 43" shoot through umbrellas and they are also good.

I have two sets, really - one consisting of two of the 001bs and two LumoPro LP632 swivels. The other consists of the LumoPro air-cushioned light stand that came with the Strobist SP1 kit and the standard swivel.
Given the choice I'd take the 001Bs anytime - they're a foot shorter than the other Lumopro lightstand and the swivels are far superior.. the whole thing is much more compact. I find the standard swivels cumbersome and annoying to pack.
I also have the Westcott 43" shoot-through brolly and it's great.. I bought the silver reflective one to go with it but have hardly used it - I find the shoot-through much more useful.
Hope that helps. I ordered my light stands and whatnot from B&H/Adorama/MPEX... MPEX's shipping is a heck of a lot more but neither of the two big stores stocked the LumoPro LP632 at the time I ordered them so I ended up getting those from MPEX. It was worth the small extra shipping charge.

Geez,
with John been locked up there for 3 days and nights, and Backflip boy running the hotel over with a train evreyday no wonder the joint was falling apart!! On a funny note at breakfast, 8.30am today there, I heard as I walked past this larger guy with eyes so red and recessed (make Adam's cats eyes look like an owl) quietly asked the staff in a quaking voice if he could have 3 bloody mary's, the bartender said in a compassionate voice ok sir no problems I understand.
About 5 minutes later a waiter walked through the whole restaurant with the drinks on the tray yelling out "3 BLOODY MARYS!!!!" till he got to the last table where the big fella put his hand up and everyone looked at him..very funny I laughed a lot about the compassion the barman showed compared to the disregard of the waiter.

Question for the Newcastle/Sydney members:
Hubby and I are flying into Newcastle to stay in Sydney for a few days next month (hey, $49 airfares! Need I say more?) What's the best way to get there?
Looking at the rail timetables, it looks like it will take 2.5 hours to take the train - is that right? Am I better off just hiring a car? How long is the drive?

Off the top of my head, that sounds sort of right with the trains. It really depends on what connections you have in Sydney, and where you are staying...

We're public-transporting it, the hotel is in The Rocks so once we get to Sydney that won't be a problem, it's just getting there.
Any other suggestions? We get into Newcastle about midday on Tue, so don't want to spend the rest of the day getting to Sydney. It's supposed to be a holiday!

Ah then. If you are public transporting it, you could get an intercity express train from Newcastle (or whatever is closest to the airport) that stops at only 3 stations in Sydney itself. You'll end up at the intercity train area of Central station. Then just hop on a city circle train to get to Circular Quay train station.
It depends on what bags, etc you have, but it could be walkable from there. For example, my family holidays are rarely "suitcase" ones, so we have the travel-packpack-suitcase-things (what are they actually called?!). With that, one could definitely walk from Circular Quay station. IT just depends what you are taking, and where it is in The Rocks.
Well, that's my take on it... :)

Takes 1 hr 15 minutes to get from the Newcastle entry on the freeway to the Sydney end of the freeway going the speed limit.. to actually get anywhere in Sydney from there takes probably another hour. :p
The train is alright - 2.5 hours is about average for that. Check that there's no trackwork, though, as I've been caught out before and had a 5-hr+ trip thanks to the joys of delays and rail buses.
Nfc how much it is to hire a car these days... adult fare Newcastle->Sydney is about $17.
I sometimes train it down if it's just me going as it's cheaper as far as petrol+parking goes if I'm heading into the inner city.

Enjoy you stay there Ruth, you will not need a car as you can walk to most of the Sydney stuff from the Rocks. if you need to venture further get a day tripper pass for about $14-15 and you can catch trains and buses and the great Sydney ferries all day long. had a good feed at the Sailor Thai on George St up from the Mercantile Hotel on Friday night if you like nouvo Thai, quick fresh and different. Nice image in your golf entry.. look forward to seeing you complete the course!!!
