Question for the Newcastle/Sydney members:
Hubby and I are flying into Newcastle to stay in Sydney for a few days next month (hey, $49 airfares! Need I say more?) What's the best way to get there?
Looking at the rail timetables, it looks like it will take 2.5 hours to take the train - is that right? Am I better off just hiring a car? How long is the drive?
Thanks guys!
Getting from Newcastle Airport to Broadmeadow Train Station by Taxi could well be the same price as the airfare, I'd be looking at a cheap Hire Car, Pick up Newcastle Air Port with either drop off in Sydney or back at Newcastle Airport if that's where your return flight leaves from.
Alternative is always to stop in Newcastle, and discover why many of us would never live anywhere else.

It's about a 2.5 hour rail trip from Newcastle to Sydney and a similar time by car (depending on what time of day you plan on traveling - getting into Sydney by road in peak hour is insanity).
Depending on where you are staying and traveling to while in Sydney will be the deciding factor on using public transport to get around or hiring a car.

We're public-transporting it, the hotel is in The Rocks so once we get to Sydney that won't be a problem, it's just getting there.
Any other suggestions? We get into Newcastle about midday on Tue, so don't want to spend the rest of the day getting to Sydney. It's supposed to be a holiday!
If you come down by train from Newcastle, once you get to Central Station, got to Platform 17 (there are lifts) and head to Circular Quay. The Rocks area is definitely only a short walk from there.
Getting around Sydney itself by public transport is relatively easy (plenty of buses), but if you are planning on heading out into the suburbs to do any tourist related stuff, it becomes a tad more difficult in some places.
I am sure if you post some of your itinerary here at least 24 hours ahead of when you are doing it, we'll give you advice on how to get to where you want to be.

What old fart said. The taxi from the airport to the nearest train station will be atleast $50. There's a pretty big hire car mob at the airport and the drive will be nicer than one of the crappy trains you will get. Bit of phototax from me to. Australian motox titles at the lakes track at Awaba. Plenty more on my Flickr page if your interested.

Oh good, I thought it might be the bourbons I have had that made them so bright.
They are good action shots though. I am starting to understand the way shutter speed works to freeze action.

Nice, I was having a play with one at one of the camera stores in Bondi Junction the other day. Price drop to $1700 for Aussie stock, 1509 grey at DDP.
Also thought i should mention DDP is having a Canon sale.
50L = $1509
70-200 f2.8 IS L = $1999

I want to get some more reach for my surfing shots at a decent price. I have a bit of $$$ coming in from Mr Rudd this year and want to spend it wisely.
1. Upgrade the 70-200 f/4 to the 70-200 f/2.8 (mostly for Event stuff and indoor use)
or
2. Get the 15mm fisheye
and
3. Thinking of getting the 400 f/5.6
or
4. Maybe get the 300 f/4 IS

3 and 4 could both be served (more or less) by the 100-400L. Would certainly give you the extra reach you need for the surfing stuff. Depends how your priorities lie WRT low light events v. surfing.

Yeah I had pondered the 100-400.... hrmmm... Considering I have the 70-200 f/4 and will most likely go up to the f/2.8 now that it's on special I was gonna go a nice prime instead...
A mate has the 100-400 so I might hire the 300 and a 400 and then play with them both at the same time... see what I think.

Sounds like a prime would be fine for surfing then, but remember surfing is probably not all you'll use it for.

Oh. Sorry, no. Just asked a guy who owns one and he said it gord 5.0->5.6 at about 300, but isn't sure about 4.5->5.0.
Edit: google to the rescue:
"Some may consider the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens to be a slow (aperture) lens. Starting at f/4.5, the 100-400 goes to f/5 around 130mm and finally to f/5.6 at approximately 250mm. A 100mm f4.5 lens is slow, but a 400mm f5.6 is not too bad (relatively speaking). Actually, to buy a faster 400mm lens will cost you a significant additional amount of money. "

Nope. USA copies, like Australian ones, carry international warranty. "Imports" from B&H are slightly cheaper and grey, and need to be returned to them for warranty. Same deal with DDP here, etc.

Not quite true. I've bought a few grey lenses and I don't think they've ever come with an international warranty card.

It's more about marketing and business skills than photography.
Although there is also the fact that to charge for your services, you'll need another $10k or so of gear (faster glass and some backup gear). Plus you'll need to feel confident to sell yourself as a professional photographer.
You've got to really want it to make it worthwhile, I think. But that kinda depends on what type of photography you want to sell too. e.g. selling landscape images needn't require big gear outlay. But you will need a lot of skill to create images that sell ;)

From my understanding, grey stock simply means stock that is imported through a non-official channel - in this case, purchasing a lens in Australia, which originated out of Australia and was not supplied from Canon Australia.
This should be the same case with an Adorama grey import, just means that it was not from Canon USA, but is original non-grey stock from another country (probably Hong Kong or Japan). All lenses carry international warranty, so even though it was not a grey import when you bought it from USA, it's still a grey import to Australia.
(Does that make sense? It makes sense in my head... :p)

Same reason I just bought some background support stands & clamps from B&H rather than from the local camera store - even with shipping something that heavy internationally it was ~$150 cheaper. On a matter of $20, no worries, I'd buy local.. but $150 is more than just pocket change for most.

My $0.02 - go 100-400 with similar range and f/stop to primes, (unless spending mega $'000's). Also, will a fishy get much use? You need to think about how often it'll be effective/used, before throwing a decent amount of money to that, vs, say, your other choice of the 70-200.
3 and 4 could both be served (more or less) by the 100-400L. Would certainly give you the extra reach you need for the surfing stuff. Depends how your priorities lie WRT low light events v. surfing.

Agree 100%, in fact got the kit form B&H, including delivery etc, much cheaper than legs only bought locally.
It's all about getting the best value for your purchase.
Having said that, just got the 40D for about the same (maybe marginally less, depending upon forex rates) from local supplier, as B&H were not so competitive, even with rebates. Again, shop where you get the best value.

I think we all agree local purchase if possible for bodies to ensure no warranty hassles, better still if you can wait 8 months after the release of the new model, eg. my 40D body only $1800 best price at the time now you can buy it closer to $1,000, sure might be related to the ForEx rates but still its the better value buying if you are patient......i.e see cartoon a few pages back re mail order lol.
BOSS asked coalcliff...how do you find the above for surf shots? mate the 100-400 is great for me, can zoom into the action or zoom out to get the wider shots. Often i cannot zoom with my feet because the vantage spot has limited area and prime glass, unless you are carry an arsenal, doest give you the flexibility. Also the IS is great for hand held shooting.

How can I buy local at that price, as much as I would like to support the guys I cannot justify it. Your thoughts??
Hong Kong ftw! from what I remember, I paid less for the 055MF4 and my 322RC2 ballhead two years ago, than what Adorama is selling the 055MF4 is, before shipping.

Banno...just spoke to camera house Maroochydore, the 100/400 has come down from $2695 to $1999 with them.
coalcliff...how do you find the above for surf shots?
My $0.02 - go 100-400 with similar range and f/stop to primes, (unless spending mega $'000's). Also, will a fishy get much use? You need to think about how often it'll be effective/used, before throwing a decent amount of money to that, vs, say, your other choice of the 70-200.
See? Everyone thinks the same thing, effectively!
Thanks again guys. I can get the 100-400 for $1645 so that wasn't an issue.
I just got offered Ruth's 400 f/5.6 for a very good price so I think I will go down that path and see how things go. I'll try my mates 100-400 at the same time. If I dont like it I'll sell it and get something different...!
The fish was an option just cos I could :) and it would be fun!! Starting to get into shooting my mate who's a pro BMX guy and thought the fish may come in handy. But seriously with the 70-200 2.8 n special it's pretty much shoved the fish to the side and ordered itself :)
Thanks for your persuasion guys :D

I have neither, which is why I was hoping someone would come up with some clever idea I hadn't thought of that didn't necessarily involved either one. I'm not particularly looking to start a business, just earn a bit of gear-money. :)
Have you looked at the (dark ;)) path of stock photography? It's for some people, not for others.
As far as I can tell there's no "easy" way of making money off photography, at least not in this town - it's taken me a couple of years to get music photography off the ground enough that I can pay for a few lenses with it and that took a great deal of time and effort shooting for cheap or free to get my foot in the door and score enough free passes to make it worth it.
Troll around for competitions, too, perhaps?
Thanks for your persuasion guys :D

I did briefly some time ago, but some research on POTN convinced me that it was evil and that there was no money in it anyway (many stories of people earning <$100 over 3+ years.)
Damn frustrating. I worked out this morning that I have about $16k (or about $11k after tax) of Long Service Leave entitlements.. tempting...

Hey Welby, I love the shots. I love saturation. :D
Incidently, is Marmont wearing pink now? What the? i wanted to be there but didn't get the chance. How awesome is the Awaba track :) It's lots of fun going down those hills, I went flying off it one day when I decided "If they can go that fast...so can I" haha I was right for the turns and jumps...but I didn't have the braking ability they did. bwhahha Then again, I would have weighed twice their weight.
Yep Marmont and boyd both had pink on yesterday. They looked soper  And your right the track is awesome, so much better than the terrace one.

Well I've touched on this. The posed shots were done just a few weeks ago, so no deal there. I've been shooting all my son's games and sent home letters of intro with all the kids, and not no sales from it at all. I thought about expanding that idea to take in other teams, but if my son's team can be trusted as a gauge, there is zero interest in it anyway. I'm currently spending 3-4 hours a week shooting and PPing one game for $0, I don't fancy spending, say, 30 hours a week shooting and PPing 10 games for $0.

the reality of the current economic climate is that most folk with kids( and a lot without kids) are in deep struggle town and why pay $$$ for a photo they can get with their p & s for virtually free. they are prepared to forsake quality of their kids piccies for an extra couple of litres in the tank to get to the game.
My local junior footy club is using a mob for the team photos who are prepared to come down shoot for a long time with no minimum to buy. The funny thing is they are coming from 1and a half hours away. So glad i did not put my hand up to compete with that.

To get to earning regular money off live music and band promotional shoots I've spent perhaps two years shooting probably an average of 6-8 hours a week in venues which I've often (in the beginning) paid $5-15 to get into and then a further 2-3 hours processing from each session.. per week... all for zilch. By pursuing publications and bands and initially shooting for free (for the publications, I had a policy of never shooting for nothing for bands that weren't friends) I got my foot into the door and started getting free passes and more bands paying attention to what I was doing and paying for my results...
...and I still don't turn a wonderful profit. Getting much closer as I book more promotional shoots, though.
My point is, though, that without expending a certain amount of effort initially for no or minimal return you're not likely to find a great deal of money in it...
Having said that, all that time shooting and PPing improved my photographic and Photoshop skills no end and taught me a bunch about business so I don't count it as wasted time. Groundwork and practice.
...anyway, that's my 0.02 on making money on the side doing something other than portraiture/weddings/etc. in Newcastle.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm trying to jump into something and earn good money straight away with no effort. I know it's not that easy. I know what you mean... I found it easier because I was doing something I absolutely loved and didn't mind if I made no money off it because, hell, being up close and personal to world-reknowned bands is a hell of a buzz in itself.
In some ways it may be easier to just shoot what you love shooting and then take a look at whether there's any money to be found in it... less frustrating, anyway ;)

Always good advice. :) And that's how it started, I was shooting my son's games for my own pleasure and wondered if other parents might buy a print or two. I was going to be there anyway, and was going to be shooting it anyway.

Hi all, sorry to hear about your troubles Ruth.
Been playing with a new toy here at home. I built a Windows Home Server (WHS) machine.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/features.mspx
Based on Small Business Server (still has some of the badging during install:rolleyes:) it is targeted at the family that have several computers in the house and want a simple file share and backup functionality. Really cool features like auto nightly backups of all PCs connected, media server, duplication of files across the HD's in the server, webserver, remote internet access . I was streaming music from the server to my sons XBox (original) Media Centre and onto the Home Theatre. I'm running mine as a headless box and just use either the WHS Console or remotely login in.
One of the first things I did after switching on the server was to copy my photos to it. If you have two or more hard drives on your home server, WHS ensures files stored in shared folders are automatically duplicated to multiple hard drives. In my two 500Gb HD WHS system I have copies of the images on both HD's, but to the other networked PC's they appear only one. The thing I like about this is the are not encrypted in any way, I can remove the 2nd HD and plug it into another machine and all the files are there.
I now have the home PC's doing automated nightly backups. These start at a time of your choosing (default 12pm) and image your PC to the server. Incremental changes are then saved on subsequent nights. You then choose to how long to keep the daily, weekly & monthly backups. It does a clean-up every Sunday and removes any older backup or ones you've flagged for deletion.
One major hassle is there is a Data corruption bug if working on large files directly from the server. The fix for this is in beta ATM and I'll apply that when it's officially released. I work around this for now by still working on the files on the laptop and using the server storage as simple storage. I have 1Tb in there now and have plans to add 2x750G drives in the next few weeks. You can plug in a new 750Gb HD, go to the admin console tell the server that the new drive is to be part of the pool and you now have 750Gb more storage.
I'm very happy with it. It was super easy to get up and going and recommend it to anyone. To me it's the next step above a NAS in terms of storage, but its the other features like backups, duplications, webserver and remote access that really make it.

Hrm. That sounds quite alright. I'm going to be looking at doing something like this in a few months (once I finish sorting all the current photos with Imatch, that is...) and that's interesting food for thought.

ROFL
Nah, you're too close to the rainforest so there will likely be lots of damp to grow lens fungus. I vote we store it at my house :D
He is willing to send it Australia but he said he will have to tack on an additional $15 in postage
"I don't have any examples scanned but trust me, it's a gorgeous piece of glass. yes but i'll have to tack on another $15 for shipping

I've copied my IMatch DB and are running it as a test version. In this version I've re-mapped all of my normally offline to the share area on the server. Access time for jpgs is good over wireless to the laptop. Raws are a little slower. I wouldn't store the IMatch DB on the server until the Power Pack1 is released. The Power Pack also had a easy method to back up the WHS machine itself to external HD's. Currently I have a external HD that is my offsite backup so this will slot in nicely.
NerdyNigel over in the Brissie thread put me onto it. It's just taken me some months to get around to doing it. Apparently it doesn't need a super spec machine to run it on but I had some money from a Photography job a few months back so spent it on the server rather than more gear.

Oh BTW David, your 580EX arrived this morning. I took it off the delivery lady dressed in only a towel which seemed to entertain her a little. Anyways, I've scheduled it in for an operation tonight. Will let you know if she makes a full recovery.

Haha, when I first read that I thought you meant the delivery lady was dressed in a towel! :p

Ahh, good news. Little did she know there was a "flash" in the package!
Thanks for looking at it - hope she pulls through the op.

Interesting, thanks for the writeup. I've been wanting to set up something for ages, but torn between home-NAS devices and rolling my own PC-based solution using FreeBSD.
Just one of several things on the backburner..

I actually 'like' the for sale ads in this thread...saves me wading through all the US only stuff for Aussie stuff. Also alerts me to stuff i 'need' that I didn't even know I needed until I saw it for sale.

LOL the 50 something year old delivery lady probably looks a lot better dressed in a towel than I do.

Yes, if you'd included the batteries I would have flashed here right there on the front door step.

Yeah - it's an expensive exercise, this use of POTN. I'm often discovering things I need, and that's usually after I've just upgraded a piece of equipment

Plus it would have cracked the 500gram mark and required different bags. And then you might have swapped my Imedions for some other brand! :p

Looking for some advice re: QR shoes/plates - anyone using Kirk, RRS, Arca Swiss etc. shoes/plates? I like the fact that the Markins one is fitted to each camera but it's causing problems ->
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=532964
edit: Oh hey, it looks like the Markins quick shoe is compatible with mostly any of the above for plates.. apparently... this bears investigating!

Only experience I've had with QR plates is with Manfrotto ones... can provide a photo for it if you need?

Went to Canon Melbourne today and noticed a huge "For Lease" sign :O
Are they moving or something? The current location is so convenient for me though :(
I also went in just as this staff member was filling up all the brochures and scored some nice brochures (though some of it was very old...50 f/1.0...300 f/4 non IS... Ancient lol)
I also took a quick snap of their pen holder which I found hilarious, posted it up: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=533015
