Went to Canon Melbourne today and noticed a huge "For Lease" sign :O

Are they moving or something? The current location is so convenient for me though :(

I also went in just as this staff member was filling up all the brochures and scored some nice brochures (though some of it was very old...50 f/1.0...300 f/4 non IS... Ancient lol)

I also took a quick snap of their pen holder which I found hilarious, posted it up: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=533015

heh, that's an awesome pen holder :p

Beautiful image Jim!

Clarence: not complaining about the linkage, but it was the second time you'd mentioned the items in a short space of time ;) I prefer to see just one post when things are for sale :p

I emailed Adorama, then called them early in the morning to follow up. All cancelled and dealt with quite quickly. They replied to the email too ;)

Pen holder would look better with the rubber grip. Tell them it costs $23 from Canon parts

Morris at Adorama is a tool.
sorry item is no longer available
So apparently the whole order was put on hold and I wasn't told which item is not available, and that's it.

I think I might cancel the order, and re-create it. No need to order the Rayflash any more :p cos I have one here.

ha ha ha.. that is sooo fricken funny Dan... you can be up till 4 am fiddling with bits of camera, posting messages on forums etc etc but don't have time to take a photo. That was my whole idea of running this competition so we would be made to use our gear rather than talk about it. 4 holes awaiting your creative genius.... Go Dan Go! BTW didn't bid on the 800mm lens, the manual focus put me off lol.

photobitz
8th of July 2008 (Tue), 19:40
 You were seriously thinking about bidding?

OK, what I meant was I don't have any time during the day to get out and take pictures of the necessary requirements for each hole because of my work commitments. If it could be done using my home-made light tent I wouldn't have an issue doing it at 3am in the morning :p

Shooting for the 3rd and 4th holes may require thinking outside the box, if not thinking outside the space-time continuum in which the box sits.

OK so I've been emailing Fanny (heh) and they've cancelled the order but my money is sitting in credit in their account, they never mentioned anything about the $70-odd postage cost.

Does anyone want anything? If they are unwilling to refund the postage cost (why? I don't know, just if), I can go ahead with the order to satisfy the retail hunger of Shane, Feng, Angus and others, if need be.

But I am thinking of just getting it off Stu at QCSA as his price is $385 aussie, no currency charge on the credit card that always whacks up your buy price when buying OS, and he has been very helpful in the past. Plus I can claim the GST back and that brings it to a no brainer for me.Uh Oh gst is added in the checkout proceedure.bugger.

yup

usually with a destination in mind - sometimes to improve on a picture I may have already taken but have a different idea for it now - sometimes to explore something I may have seen earlier and want to check it in different light.

It usually means, though, I am leaving home around 5am on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Yes, but a lot of the time it's just out the back door into the back yard.
Do you have a specific destination or subject in mind, or just wander off?
Sometimes I wander down to the local creek and just amble along the banks looking for birds or insect life. Trouble is, each means a total lens and flash swap. Nothing worse than seeing a cute little wren when I have a macro lens on. Insect life is usually sparse in Winter so I go more for birds and often drive to reserves etc.

About once a month the Brissie folks meet somewhere and we try to mix it about so we're not shooting the same stuff.
How often? Day, night, or both?
Depends, at home I'll wander out about mid morning when the sun reaches certain parts of the garden. I like to try to get out once a week at least if I can, it helps keep me sane. I'm on holidays this week but I haven't been out yet. Bad weather and household jobs (painting) have been getting in the way.
How do you find the time?

Usually on a Sat or Sun I can get away for a few hours.

Yes, there are times I go off on what I like to call a "photo safari" to some place I either haven't ever been too or haven't been to for a long time. Sometimes it's for a specific reason, but others just to see what's there. At the moment, I want to get back into Sydney for some cityscape work with the new camera and figure out how to get photos of Lighthorse Interchange on the M4 without getting run over by freeway traffic.

Mostly day trips because I haven't got the hang of shooting at night just yet, although once I get off these awful early mornings and can stay up past 8:00pm, I might go for a wander and see what I can do at night.

Since I work irregular shift work (not the standard 6 - 2, 2 - 10 type), I tend to have a lot of time during the day either before or after work to get out and do things.

hehehe,

I spend far less time gardening than I used to. Our water restrictions have sort of forced me in this direction, if it can't survive on the limited rain we get then it just to bad. This time has now gone towards photography, either here or out shooting.

There is a new theme every week and it motivates me to look at things differently and get out and shoot them.

I rarely have the time (or rather, I am rarely given permission ;)) to go out specifically to take photos except for about half an hour during my lunch break. If it's a nice day I'll take my camera to work in case I get a chance to go out at lunch. Usually I'll choose a subject, media or whatever beforehand so that I don't have to haul around 20kg worth of camera gear. ie. I decide to only shoot IR, or playaround with my 50mm lens for that etc. for that session. If I am travelling anywhere with the family I'll take a little more gear with me and take pictures of interesting things along the way... and pics of the kids of course. I am rather uninspired when it comes to night-time photography so most of my shooting is odne during the day.

In other news.. I thought that the 70-200 f/4 was a big lens. Damn was I wrong! The 70-200 f/2.8 dwarfs it! It is massive in comparison. Kinda nice to be able to hold each one and compare them :p

I've emailed the Radiopopper guys a few times in the past few months enquiring as to whether they're allowed to sell/use them in Australia and each time it's been a "no but we're working on it, check the blog for details in a few weeks/months and see how we're progressing" response.

well... I was hanging out for the Radiopoppers but I don't know if they're going to be coming anytime soon and I think I'm going to be needing more reliable triggering in the not too distant future. Skyports look like they may fit the bill... it'd just be so convenient to be able to change settings from afar.

*grinz*

I saw the new prices on the lenses at D-D and was very surprised. The 50 f/1.2 has become very reasonable - the 85mm is still a bit steep for me.

I'm still humming about a Canon 24-70

and I have my eye on a 135mm

but not yet - lotsa personal stuff coming up that needs cash - like the trip back to NZ for Christmas.

That's why you still see a few lists floating around.

Personally, I agree that a link is better - cleaner.

I used to have a link to my gearlist - which was a link to my server - but I removed it quite a while ago.

Following that link, I noticed that gear lists are expressly allowed. Personally that ****s me to tears. I wish more people would just link to a post in the gear list thread.

Even mine? Even though it's only a one-liner in the smallest possible font allowed?

of what?

The kiwis made mention of it - and I issued them with a challenge. If they came up with a really cool one, I would use it.

I really like the one Pekka has (no - I am not brown nosing) and something along that line would be acceptable ;)

Here's one for you guys. Do you 'go out shooting' (IE leave the house for the specific purpose of shooting?) Do you have a specific destination or subject in mind, or just wander off? How often? Day, night, or both? How do you find the time?

Discuss.

As Greg said, we tend to go to different locations (although always start at Campos Coffee ) around Brissie. Kinda decide over coffee on what location. Greg and I once went to Brissie Powerhouse in New Farm - planned to specifically go there, and brought some fast glass for the dark interior, but that was the only time we've specified location and limited glass use. Most of us bring a selection of lenses to suit a selection of conditions every time.

Speaking of 580EX... my second 580EX-II finally arrived today!

Woohoo! Mine will be back soon - all in working order, too (thanks Dan!)

Even mine? Even though it's only a one-liner in the smallest possible font allowed?

Primes always take up less space (well, your sized primes, that is) - even in sigs.....

You should see the Merrimu Reservoir which supplies Bacchus Marsh and Melton, it's barely a puddle :( Though, in saying that a puddle is a lot more than what is in the "lake" in Ballarat.

There are a few vineyards around here, but I was just reading an article (http://www.smh.com.au/news/Victoria/Bacchus-Marsh/2005/02/17/1108500206190.html)and apparently the town is named after "However, the town is named after Captain William Henry Bacchus (also of Van Dieman's Land) who occupied the valley when Clarke headed west in 1838. The 'Marsh' part of the equation reflects the fact that the valley was once full of marshland associated with the river system, although these were drained and the riverbed altered by early European settlers."

But I always thought it was named after the God, shows how much I know!
